No Movie Sharing At NXE Launch
Posted by Stuart Houghton at 4:40 PM on October 14, 2008
One potentially cool feature of Microsoft's much trumpeted New Xbox Experience dashboard revamp was the ability to share your NetFlix movies with other gamers.
Up to eight people could watch a streamed NetFlix flick and share photos via slideshows.
Not any more. The feature has been pulled from the launch release of the NXE, although Microsoft are hopeful that it will return at a later date.
Photo sharing is still a goer though, which is something.

@Nexus6: I think you can still do that. This may have gone out of control.
From the way I interpreted the original article, someone was asking if he bought a movie or TV show from the marketplace would he be able to share it with everyone else if they had netflix.
That isn't the same thing as everyone having netflix and watching the streaming content available.

So did everyone here the news that Bush signed into law to have a copyright czar? This move could be becuase of that, though I fail to see why because you are paying for it. Maybe the 360 isn't as powerful as they would like it to be or because of bandwidth issues.
It's really stupid to even bother going this whole route in changing the dashboard.

First Sony cut it out of Home, then Microsoft out of NXE; looks like the movie companies don't want this to happen.
Although I don't see how it could be bad thing, instead of having a friend come over and watch a rented or bought movie, you can do it virtually; but I'm no expert on the subject.

And even if your friend does have a NetFlix account, are you really going to sit there with a headset on and watch the movie together online? And if so, couldn't you just both start the movie at the same time and call your friend on the phone?
I mean, I'm sure some teenagers might actually use this, but I'd be much more likely to use photo sharing than do any long distance movie watching. It's the same as the (cancelled?) PlayStation Home feature. The only videos that I might want to watch with my gaming friends would have to be quick and relevant to what we're playing. Like videos from games (like Skate or Halo 3), or a YouTube videos.

@RoboticSpacePenguin: I was thinking I would watch a movie with my brother who is 5 hours away, or maybe my cousin who is in Australia. You just put on your headset(preferably wireless) and sit back and watch. The point is that Microsoft was again attempting to branch out from their market and make it a replace all device in the family room. I don't think they had just gamers watching "gamer" movies together in mind.

It must have been a technical challenge, because what you're saying makes no sense.
The way the feature was described, it was only for NetFlix streaming movies and everyone watching would be required to have a NetFlix account. So you weren't going to be able to share movies from discs or with friends who don't have a NetFlix account in the first place..

Do I hear a petition because I think one's in order. Shit if I had a lawyer on retainer, I'm sure I'd have a case on the 20th of November. Seriously, if you yell fire in a crowded area, it's a crime because you're endangering human life. After hearing this news (no sarcasm O_O ) I just want to die! Surely I can sue MS for making me feel like dieing since my life is in danger if I actually kill myself. I swear I'd sue if I go through with it too O_o
...
It really is getting harder to take release dates at face value these days. I'm just getting tired of feeling like I'm being made excited over nothing... a delay is a little better then a deal breaker but not by much. I'm almost at the point that I wish people would announce features with a specific date unless they know it'll ship on that date. Something like "Video sharing on NXE potentially coming on a future update" is better and you know what... I'll know it's in the pipe and not stress. Not that I'm stressed (other than wanting to die), I'm just projecting here :|

@RoboticSpacePenguin: I actually do this fairly often. I moved over 3,000 miles away from my best friend about a year ago. For obvious reasons, we can't really hang out like we used to. In order to keep from growing apart, we routinely get a movie from the video marketplace and time the start of it so that we can "watch it together" like we used to when I still lived there. It's a great way to hang out with a non-gamer using XBL.
This feature is my most anticipated of NXE.

Posted 2:46 PM 14/10/08
The NetFlix deal, IMO, was the absolute WEAKEST feature of the NXE, and so this is really no big deal to me.
I mean, what killed the feature to begin with is the fact that every viewer had to also be paying subscribers to NetFlix! Kinda silly if you ask me, seeing as how anyone watching could just go off and get the same film on his own anyway.
Now if it had been only the film's host was required to be the subscriber, then that would have been an EXCELLENT feature, one to get self-slapping excited for!
It's like telling your friend: "Hey there's this film I wanna show you!", when he's already got a copy setting on his own bookcase.
Sure the experience of watching it together is worth a little something... but still so much is taken away from the overall impact of the feature because of that one stipulation.

you: has a netflix account.
me: do not have netflix account.
friend 1: do not have a netflix account
friend 2: has a netflix account.
conclusion: you could start up the movie, and then the 3 of us could join you. so its basically like you rent a video, and call us over, and we all watch it on your sofa together.
but, since we all need netflix, i really dont care about this feature, because, personally the videos aren't yet to the selection that i prefer.

@evilbananawind: yeah, and then you get to press a button once every 10 minutes to keep the controller on.
i end up having to turn it back on every time i want to pause what im watching. not that big of a deal then, but if youre trying to keep up a minimal conversation, itll end up like cell phone ads about lost calls.
it was sort of an interesting idea, i like the idea for shorter videos to discuss, rather than watching a whole movie. i really prefer watching movies without someone yapping in my ear the whole time. thats why theaters are usually quiet, so you can hear the damn film.
interesting option, didnt think i would ever use it though.

Uhm, so where in this article is the quote where Microsoft says "No, you cannot watch Netflix movies in a party with other people who have Netflix" because I sure as hell don't see it - the quote seems to talk about photo and video sharing in terms of stuff on your hard drive. Not about the Netflix stuff.
I have seen three sites report this yet none of the sourced material states ANYTHING about the Netflix feature, only photo and video sharing of things on your hard drive.

The ONE feature I actually thought was good that was coming out of this dash reboot. Awesome Microsoft/Netflix, you might as well not even include the functionality if you can't watch it with others. That was pretty much the only thing that set it apart from watching it on your computer via streaming from Netflix's website.
I hope the "at a later time" comment means a week or two and not the next major update but I know I'd be kidding myself if I thought you could get things done in a timely fashion.
