Earthworm Jim Shines On Euro VC
Posted by Mike Fahey at 3:20 AM on October 4, 2008
I'm not usually one for posting about the European Wii Shop Channel releases, but this week's offerings have me completely jealous and it's just not fair at all. Today sees the release of two of the best games the Sega Genesis (or Mega Drive, if you prefer) had to offer, and I am going to hold my breath until the come to North America. Not only do you Europeans get the Shiny classic platformer Earthworm Jim, they're also getting Shining Force II, Sega's tactical role-playing gem, possibly the sweet spot in the entire series. Dammit. Both are going for 800 Wii points, and they're both eventually coming here, but still.
And yes, I do own both cartridges for my Genesis, but that's hardly the point. You guys have better food, better women (with notable exceptions!), and better VC games. Next World War we're staying home.
Unless of course we start it.
Wii Shop Channel releases
The first of this week's Virtual Console offerings welcomes back classic '90s gaming hero Earthworm JimTM! Jim was an ordinary earthworm who did very earthworm-like things such as flee from crows and eat dirt. One day, during an outerspace fight, a suit drops to Earth, and falls around Jim. It mutates him into a large and intelligent (at least by earthworm standards) superhero.
Play as Jim in this SEGA MEGA DRIVE classic! When you learn of the evil plans of Psy-Crow and Queen Slug-for-a-Butt, you decide to rescue Princess What's-Her-Name. Run, gun, swing on hooks by your head and launch cows at the interesting characters you meet along the way, such as Major Mucus, Chuck and Fifi, Evil the Cat and Bob the Killer Goldfish. Earthworm JimTM is available now for 800 Wii Points.
Next up this week is the acclaimed strategy role-playing game Shining ForceTM II, also for SEGA MEGA DRIVE. It's a dark and stormy night in the kingdom of Granseal, when a thief steals two jewels from the Tower of the Ancients. He sets in motion strange events that lead to the resurrection of Zeon, the Devil King.
Granseal's king falls sick, the princess is kidnapped and a door to Arc Valley, the Devil King's home, is opened. The young swordsman, Bowie, realising the grave danger Granseal faces, must lead the Shining Force to find the Holy Sword, the stolen jewels, and protect Granseal against the invading armies of Zeon. Shining ForceTM II is available now for 800 Wii Points.
Virtual Console offers users the ultimate retro gaming experience. This week's titles join the list of 252 classic titles already available for Virtual Console in Europe.

The SNES had superior color and sound to the Genesis. Why would they release the inferior version on VC??? Are we also going to get the inferior Genesis versions of Street Fighter II as well???

The Earthworm Jim games are both coming to Good Old Games for $5.99 (together). Just buy that, plug in a 360 game pad, and use XPadder to configure the controls. Easy!
Though if you don't have a 360 controller, I guess it's more expensive!

Am I the only one that wants a new game (2Dish, for the love of God! 3D was the lamest thing ever!)? If not, an HD remake (again, in 2D with 2D animation, as cartoony as it was always meant to be!!)

When i was a little kid me and my brothers rented shining forces two, and the catridge was messed up so you couldnt save at all. We played it for 2 days straight in shifts, got pretty far as i remember too past the part where u fight on the giant chessboard. Then we all fell asleep on the floor and mom came along and "bloop" shut of the sega. Wen we woke up and told her what she had done she went out and bought us a copy of the game. I got a great mom.:)

Was that a joke at some european women with hair under their arms?
Oh yeah I forget, manly men like girls that look like 13 year olds.
Anyways... YAY earthworm JIM... I have that on a disce for pc, don't need to install it or anything. Not great to play with a keyboard though.

@Tempestora: That sounds like Wild 9, which came out for the PSX (and originally was going to come out for the Sega Saturn, which was canceled the month it started getting advertised as such in the magazines). It had the byline right on the cover, "Torture Your Enemies", and like EWJ, had character designs by Doug TenNapel. It was okay, but nothing to write home about.
What WOULD have been worth writing home about would have been a new EWJ using the Wild 9 engine. That would have been fun.

I have the Sega CD version of this. Has frequent loading times (picture of EWJ loading a truck ^_^) but it also has better music and a new level (featuring that loveable, uh, whatever it was thing named Big Bruty). I recall the Genny version having a level the SNES version didn't have as well.
Just one of a number of great games for the Sega CD that didn't involve FMV...

A true black pudding is wonderful, unfortunately it really needs to be home-made, some of the shop bought stuff is terrible.
Do knock "offal" until you try it, don't forget that a lot of French cuisine,(arguable the pinnacle of food,) includes it and is from other places renamed with a French name.
If anybody thinks they don't eat offal they have not eaten a hamburger or sausages. The difference is that we at least know what we are eating.

I remember reading Games magazines when I was still a young sprog. Everyone seems to have fond memories of David Perry, but I remember him being an prime suspect when it came to over hyping new releases.
I also remember a game he made that I've to this day never played, but involved using psychic powers to throw people at fatal environmental hazards, and each level began with a free fall ala MDK/MDK2
I would love to play Earthworm Jim again. I would settle for watching the cartoon though.

Yyyyeah, no. You're forgetting that we Europeans are getting inferior, squashed, 1/5th slower versions of all but a very, very few Mega Drive, SNES and NES games. I'd rather have to wait a week longer for a full-speed, full-screen version of the game.
The worst part of this was when I felt all proud for completing Super Ghouls & Ghosts, and then discovered that they'd nerfed the difficulty on the European version. Damn you, PAL!

@DorkimusPrime:
I was making kind of a blanket statement in this case. It's very possible that in this instance, the Genesis version was superior. Overall though, if a game was released for both systems, the SNES version generally had crisper colors, and superior sound.
