iPhone's Trism Creator Rich, Working on Trismology And Others
Posted by Brian Crecente at 7:00 AM on November 19, 2008
CNN has an interesting take on the recent iPhone boom for game developers. They tracked down Steve Demeter, the guy behind mega-hit Trism, to find out that in the first two months alone his game netted him $USUS5 a pop. Sheesh, that's a downloaded game.
With the success of Trism to ride, Demeter recently quit his job at a bank and is devoting all of his time to developing games for the iPhone. Next up, Demeter and his staff of five, are working on five games, with two coming out by Christmas. One of the new titles is called Trismology and will be a spin-off on Trism. Any bets on whether it will be a role-playing blend of the puzzler, ala Puzzle Quest?

I'm just curious as to how this game exactly plays.
I don't have an iphone or anything but from the quick glance, looks like a variation of bejeweled or any other pick some matching shapes and watch them disappear game.

71,500 downloads, does anyone know how many downloads games like Castle Crashers or Braid received?

I loved the demo in Installer, i haven´t bought it in App Store, but i´m glad he´s getting recognition. He and Aurora Feint developers are the ones who really made App store relevant when it came out...

I absolutely love this game. And hate it at the same time. Mainly because my wife soundly trounces my scores with ease. It really is an awesome game, though, and a GREAT time-waster when you're in the doctor's office, on the bus, wherever you have a few minutes to spare. Achievements built into the gameplay for accomplishing certain feats give it solid replay-ability. One of the first games I bought for my iPhone, and one of the most played for sure. It's the only game on my wife's iPhone - she's tried some others but keeps coming back to Trism.

Very nice success story, I'm surprised he quit his job to start a small mobile game company. Seems like a gamble, but maybe if he already has other ideas then he can succeed with other games.
"I get e-mails from 50-year-old ladies who say, "I don't play games, but I love Trism.' That's the coolest thing."
But Trism is a game, so now she does play.. >.>

@Fuzzy Logic:
I'm just interested on how this "developer" will do with some original titles.
Seems to me just reworking current casual games or maybe "porting" some flash-based games would just be as good.

@exkon: It pretty much is. The only thing is that gravity is determined by which way you hold the iPhone. It's one of the better games in the app store, but that doesn't say much. I found scoring to be far too dependent on combos.
It was my most played game on my iPod Touch until I found Numba, which has more depth to it.

$250k is striking it rich? What planet do they live on? I'll grant the guy the fact that he made that in two months which is more than I have made this year, but I would consider that to be far from 'rich.'

@Qu33f_Machine: Rich considering he created a game and sold it for only $5. Also, the average annual income per American household is around the $30k mark - I'd say he's doing well.

@FabronBriseis: Yes it is, Mato had been talking about how demiforce was getting a little busy putting the finishing touches on Trism, and didn't have much time for the Mother 3 Fan Translation project.
Demiforce is a very talented guy who has taken part in several fan translation hacking projects. He knows his way around several platforms, programming-wise. It's good to know that Trism is a success for him!
