Spider-Man: Web Of Shadows Review: A Tangled Web
Posted by Mike Fahey at 6:00 AM on November 1, 2008
Spider-Man has faced off against many a foe in his long and storied career, but none quite as sinister as the last two video games based on his adventures. After two excellent video game outings, the movie-based Spider-Man 3 was a bug-filled mess rushed to release, and Spider-Man: Friend or Foe grounded our favourite hero in favour of action of a more kid-friendly kind.
Now Activision, aided by developers Treyarch and Shaba, seek to rescue Spidey from bad video game hell with the release of Spider-Man: Web of Shadows, a decidedly darker take on the classic tale of irradiated spider-infected man versus evil alien symbiote. Will they save the day, or is it too late for the webbed wonder?
Loved
Spider Combat: The innovative combat system was a big focus of Web of Shadows, and it shows. This is probably the closest any game has gotten to capturing the essence of the ol' webhead in battle. While you could simply use the same attacks over and over again to beat the game, experimenting with different combinations and unlocked moves greatly enhances the experience. This is the first Spider-Man game where I've actively sought out aerial battles - that's how much they've nailed it.
The Choice Is Yours: The battle between Peter Parker and the alien symbiote inside him plays out nicely through a series of choices that effect how the game plays out. Using the black suit as an excuse to explore the darker decisions Spider-Man could make is an intriguing mechanic. Being able to finally choose the Black Cat over Mary Jane gave me happy little comic fan chills.
Fan Service: It's quite obvious that Spider-Man: Web of Shadows was lovingly crafted by fans of Marvel comics. It shines through not only in the dialog between characters, but in actual gameplay. One boss battle has the enemy you are fighting stopping throughout the battle to ask you trivia questions, trying to ascertain if you are the real Spider-Man. Bonus points awarded for Spidey calling out Luke Cage on his 70's tiara.
Epic Boss Battles: While the meat of the game is spent completing missions (see below), there are several extremely entertaining boss fights to be had in WoS. With one exception, most fights offer something beyond simply beating your enemy into submission, be it conditions to meet, civilians to protect while the battle rages, or the aforementioned trivia challenge.
Hated
Mission, Rinse, Repeat: The vast majority of missions in Spider-Man: Web of Shadows fall into the standard "defeat X number of Y" format. While there are some protect and escort missions, for the most part it's all about beating up a large amount of foes, and once you're done, optional missions open up requiring you defeat even more. The combat is highly enjoyable, but not so enjoyable I want to spend all day pointlessly doing it.
Camera Sense Disorienting: One of the major issues I ran into as I played the game involved the camera. Running up buildings would often lock my camera in a position where the action was obscured, and trying to reposition it would simply move it about wildly until I managed to reset the damn thing. I got used to it as I played, but I shouldn't have had to.
Hello, Extras?: One constant in the 3D Spider-Man titles from Activision has been the sheer number of unlockables, from comic book pages to alternate costumes to concept art. You'll find none of these in Web of Shadows. There are collectibles, but they are more akin to the agility pickups in Crackdown than anything really interesting.
Blackbolt Sounds Less Painful: With such big names on the voice cast for the game, it boggles the mind how a relative unknown got cast in the titular role. When players begin yearning for Tobey McGuire, you know you've made a mistake casting Spider-Man. He comes off like a totally unlikeable, obnoxious, whiny little punk. Pretty sure we were supposed to like our main characters.
Swinging From What Now?: Ah, so we've regressed back to the early days of Spider-Man, when his web line can attach to the very clouds themselves. Developers may call it a design decision. I call it a crutch.
I just cannot fathom why developers find it so hard to make a good Spider-Man title these days. They were really on to something with the first Spider-Man movie title, did an amazing job with Spider-Man 2, and since then they seem to have forgotten what made those two titles great. Treyarch and Shaba have accomplished something amazing with the combat system for Web of Shadows, but by focusing so much on that one aspect they seemed to have omitted a great deal of what made the previous titles fun. It's almost as if there is just half of a game here, just waiting to be filled in with more Spider-Man goodness.
Spider-Man: Web of Shadows is an interesting exploration of Spider-Man's darker side for fans of the comic books, but less fanatical gamers might want to spin their web somewhere else.
Spider-Man: Web of Shadows was developed by Treyarch and Shaba Games, published by Activision. Released on Oct. 21 for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii & PC. Retails for $59.99 on PS3 and 360, $49.99 on Wii, and $29.99 on PC. Alternative versions available on PSP and DS. Reviewed on Xbox 360. Completed game.

@BrandonJF: Ugh, yeah, that Mysterio section sucked. I thought the combat moves were pretty fun, though, and I loved being able to web guys so they were hanging upside down from lampposts. The main thing, though, is that they nailed the web-swinging. That's one of the few reasons left to turn on my Wii.
Thanks for the good review, Fahey; I still look forward to playing this, it's good to know that what's there is fun. Here's hoping Spidey's next outing manages to combine all the good parts.
And since we live in the age of patchable games, maybe they can give us a New Spidey Voice Pack?

i agree with this review but there is one mistake:
there is absolutely no magical webbing at all. you dont hang out to the clouds. the webbing need to stick to sometheing in the game. thats why when you jump from a high building you cant swing until you reach a building where you attached to.
what you thought was magical webbing was maybe one of those wahcko glider flying enemies that was passing by and you accidentally hanged to him.
AGAIN, THERE ARE NO MAGICAL WEBBING IN THIS GAME
the swinging is more on par with spidey 2 than spidey 3.
the game is good but repetitiveness killed it

I disagree with the swinging. It's sort of "magnetic" towards buildings, but if there's no skyscraper there, you can't swing. I've only noticed once or twice that I'm swinging from nothingness. It's really good, and it's definitely the most fluid swinging there's ever been.

While extra content is good, I never purchase a game for the extra unlockables. I can even let the bad voice acting slide, but for God's sake... magic webbing? That ruins the game for me. Part of the fun of Spiderman 1 and 2 was pulling off acrobatics high above New York, then scrambling to hit a building with a web line to save yourself from death. I hesitate to say "realism" when talking about a game that involves a radiactive spider bite victim that gains superpowers, but it definitely takes away from the experience. Thanks Fahey, you saved me $60.

I'm a big Spider-man fan so I've found this game enjoyable. Just a heads up, there's more unlockable stuff in the Wii version. Six extra costumes, three or four replace the Red Suit and two or three (nobody has narrowed it down for me) for the Black Suit. Not that it improves the rest of the game play.

Here, here, on the web swinging. Spidey 2 is one of my favorite games. Every one since then has used this "more accessible" swing system and it sucks.

I still have no idea why the Spider-Man 2 game is always put on this pedestal when the combat was completely lackluster and heaven forbid you ever had to move to an interior environment. I shudder just thinking about the whole Mysterio section of the game. Yeah, swinging around was just fine, but, unfortunately, there a whole 'nother side to the game.

I agree entirely with the review, especially the part about Spider-Man's voice actor. God I hate that guy. Also, how come Spidey never talks while beating up enemies, except during boss battles? Isn't it his thing to make fun of his enemies while he pummels them into the ground?
The game feels very empty, just as you said, and I was disappointed to find that there are no collectibles worth getting and that the game doesn't even continue after you beat it.

Ultimate was kinda good.
Also, I preferred the PSX spidey games over the the movie ones. It was much simpler in design, and didn't rely on the "you can go anywhere" gimmick. This kind of things works for me in games like Fallout, but hmm Spidey, it's kind of fun at first, but get's boring fast, I'd rather see a linear, well designed level then a super vast land of the same thing over and over again.

I found the new web swinging system a relief actually. It still looks and controls great, and works similar to the standard set in Spiderman 2, but its nice not being stuck to ground at some points..and that battle with the Vulture would've been a bitch. Otherwise, I really enjoy the game, and the review says pretty much everything I could say about it.

I don't understand why people are complaining about the web-slinging. They wanted to give it a "comic book" feel to it, to capture spidey's essence.
That's exacly what they did.

I enjoyed it a great deal. Spidey has always been a bit of a whiner, which is the only reason I could stand the VA for Peter.
Other than Mary Jane yelling "PETER!" from a group of people while he's in his costume, the story was solid enough.
I really did appreciate the game. A very good Spider-Man title.

@Mommar:
Little addendum, I was disappointed with the semi-magical webbing for the web swinging in this one. They attempt to approximate when you should be attached to a building and when you can and can't web swing but it's not terribly accurate and there's definitely not the sense of physics like Spider-Man 2. It's like a slightly improved Spider-Man 3, but not nearly as bad as Ultimate was.

I found this game pretty awesome. This is the first Spider-Man game I've enjoyed since PSX and SNES days.
I have the game for Wii and I must say, the few down sides to the game were very rare and minor.
As for the web clinging to the clouds? As I played the game, you couldn't swing from anything unless there was a building or object right around.
All in all, I loved the game. As there are something like 5 different endings, I will be playing it again to try get all those 1000 Spidey Icons and unlock the last suit grrr! 5 out 6.

@BrandonJF: I really think 2 was overrated. 2 was the first to get the open world engine down, but that was it. They had very short story missions that varied in quality, then the only other thing you had to do besides swinging was collect balloons and other lame side stuff. It did have a different take on the Spiderman 2 movie plot. The mysterio stuff was pretty uninteresting other than his geek quotes and the convenience store battle.
Ultimate spiderman was great at telling its story in comic cutscenes and had a great cell shaded look. However, it had many anger-worthy chase sequences that showed it treated its players with contempt. But the swinging was still fun and playing venom was great.
Spiderman 3 was a better game than it gets credit for. It had few if any advancements over the previous games besides more interior environments. But it was fun and had alot to do. The Mary Jane voice acting was horrible, and nearly everything from the actual movie sucked, but the original contact was interesting. I liked the Lizard Sequences, Scorpion, Kraven the hunter, etc.
Web of Shadows I actually really enjoy, and in some ways it feels like the best of the bunch. Combat is definitely much much better than the other games. Swinging around town is fun, but getting yourself latched on buildings is annoying. The ability fight in the air, on the ground, on walls makes combat fun. The whole Black Cat fight is done in the air, on the side of a skyscraper, and occasionally on a roof. The game also uses Shinobi style mechanics of having you leap from one flying enemy to another to get to someplace you can't web to. The voice work IS horrible. Yet its got alot of comic fanservice.
I'd say if you liked Spiderman 2, its worth picking up, but again, I don't know why 2 is so revered other than it was the first open world.
I can say if you've liked Spiderman games, if you like the feeling of being Spiderman, you'll like this one.

Should be noted that the PS2 and DS games are vastly different from the next-gen consoles. I think they probably should have had the guy from the DS version voice Spidey. He was full of energy and actually sounds like Spider-Man should.
I don't understand how they could mess up so bad though. Spidey 2 and Ultimate Spider-Man were two of the most enjoyable games I've ever played. All they have to do is expand on the Spidey 2 formula, add some more varied missions and there you go.
Heck, even to this day I enjoy swinging around the city and helping random people. Most of the time I just swing around the city. It's a shame we've gone downhill from that.

I'm still going to make it a point to play this game sooner or later. It looks too damned neat, especially when compared to the movie games.
The one thing I can forgive is the swinging from the clouds. In playing through Ultimate Spider-Man, it became frustrating during "race" scenes and even just moving around the map because some buildings can't be grabbed from certain heights or angles. I shouldn't have to memorize the city layout just to swing around. Spidey doesn't have to. (Hell, he's only able to swing due to spidey-reflexes, which I'm not ashamed to admit lacking.) Simplifying this mechanic is a godsend.

I agree the mission of "kill x number of y guys" are pretty anoying, but then again, all that fast paced slow motion fighting keeps me pretty thrill to the game.
Only one thing, the "Swinging From What Now?" phenomenom, I had only countered a couple of time, and mostly on the park, cuz when going through the city, hardly i get to swing on something when I'm in a higher position than the most taller building around me. I can't swing if my altitude isn't lower then the height of any near by building.
The only thing i'm complaining (don't if it happens on the other versions of the game) is the clipping on most things and clipping though wall when doing a web strike and the enemy is off my focus

@BrandonJF: I think Spidey 2 is held in such high regard is because of it's replay factor. Sure the main story was small and the missions weren't that varied, but webslinging was enjoyable. Many times I would ignore the missions and just swing around the city. And I don't know ANYONE who hasn't jumped off the empire state building and swung away at the last moment. (That's one of the things that killed Spidey 3 for me. If you did the above and didn't swing away, you would land on your feet and lose NO health whatsoever.)

@Demolitionist: Actually I think Fahey may be making a little more of the "magic webbing" than should be made of it. As best as I can tell there are sections of the map the have a "roof" you can attach to. These tend to be some of the more "open" spots of the skyline. But anywhere's there's building you'll have to use them. So if you're in a section with low lying buildings, you won't be able to swing over them by attaching to the sky, you'll have to web-zip though them.
I do have to admit, I was dissapointed when I first found these "magic web zones", but over all the swinging is done well in this game. Though I do wish the web-zip had a little more speed to it.

Nice Review and spot-on too. The combat is great the fighting they nailed perfect but with no variety to the optional missions, no unlockables like the Scarlet Spidey costume and the fact that Spidey voice actor sucks this game could have been something special.
If they can add to this and find a way to add more variety and unlockables the next Spidey game should be great.
Its still a fun game but with no much else to do other then defeat some amount of enemies it gets old.

The 'swing from nothing' comments only really apply when you are in park-type areas that are flat with no surrounding buildings and only trees. Swinging From What Now?: Ah, so we've regressed back to the early days of Spider-Man, when his web line can attach to the very clouds themselves. Developers may call it a design decision. I call it a crutch.
This is the only thing I don't agree with. But I understand where your coming from. Great Review though

@Mommar: I'd considered a rental, but honestly, between all the crap I have going on at any given time, I rarely get a proper opportunity to get a real feel for a game on just a rental these days.

You have very few moments where you aren't actually webbing onto something.
How can that ruin the experience?

The reason why all of the Spider-Man games since Spider-man 2 have been "misses" is because most of the original team members responsible for Spider-man 1 and Spider-man 2 have left Treyarch since then.

I rented this from Gamefly, and I cannot be more disappointed. I find this game near unplayable because of the camera. It is awful, the story was ok. And like its been said awful voice acting, and I really miss the webbing that attached to the buildings...I was hoping for Spiderman 2 HD with Venom. Lol.

Not just a Spider-Man title, but why is it there isn't many good superhero titles these days? It seems like a no-brainer for video games, but they are often pretty stale when it comes to gameplay. The upcoming Infamous looks like a decent attempt. And although many RPG superhero titles work great (ex: City of Heroes, Freedom Force), I really want something that lets you be the superhero in an action-adventure style.

@worsethannormal:
You are kind of right, except more often than not, your webline will attach *beside* the building.
It's true that you can't webswing say, through the sky across central park, you're still essentially doing the 60s webswing and it's stupid.

I too thought his voice acting was bad at first especially his yelling, but his banter and narrating was pretty good. I also like the web slinging. The only time I questioned it was in the park and then I just zip lined myself from tree to tree, but if I was way up in the air I wasn't swinging on a cloud I was falling to my doom.

Ok here's the deal people, A. the web-swinging from the clouds, happens once, in central park, not all over the game as the review seems to present it, B. the voice acting comes off whiny 3 or 4 times not like they got Fran Drecher to voice Spidey, other than that good voice acting, 3. the camera is disorienting OCCASIONALLY, why because your dealing with a guy who can climb on walls and on the roof camera will always be an issue, 4. extras have been lacking in many other games past after SM 1 such as SPM 2 and USM so I don't know what games he played. In conclusion, great game for the common folks, amazing game for fans.

Spider-man's voice got more bearable as you go through... you get used to it.
But anyway, I thought this was the best Spider-man game yet. It's got great graphics, gameplay, and story, and those are the most important aspects of a game. The music was great too.

i always thought spidey was supposed to sound like a noobish teen. if i went back and looked at most comics, i bet i'd find him making snarky remarks to his foes and stupid puns. the beginning dialogue was corney and poorly-spoken, but it got better as the game progressed. all in all, i think this is the best spidey game out there.

@Sotiris: I 100% disagree. Ultimate's "unlock the world" idea of progression was stupid, the one handed swing-jump-swing mechanics were a huge step backward, and the Venom interludes were annoying and boring.
Ultimate Spider-Man was better than the first and third movie tie-ins, but fails to capture the fun freedom of Spider-Man Two's webslinging.

@BrandonJF: I agree. People are looking at SM2 with rose-tinted glasses.
Sure, it was fun at the time but you have to look at the fact that as a Spider-Man fan you've just seen a film you probably really liked (I was non-plussed and actually picked the game up after USM, since a friend recommended it) and you were maybe expecting a crappy tie-in game. Instead you got, oooh, a sandbox game.
The combat in SM2 was dreadful. It was never fluid and beating three mechasuit guys was nigh on impossible and the boss fights were equally awful. Not to mention the story was seriously lacking because of the unfocused sandbox element (what most sandbox games suffer from) being linked to a film plotline.
My point is basically, judge the game on its own merits rather than the hazy recall of what SM2 was. Repetition, camera issues and bad phoned-in voice acting would all be cons for SM2 without the upside of great combat or a half-decent story.
You kinda need to look at WoS like Assassin's Creed, it has a pretty good central focus but DO NOT BOTHER WITH THE SIDE MISSIONS.
Having said all that, I haven't noticed glitches but they seriously need to sort out the frequent framerate slowdown. I bought the game for my PS3 (my 360 was off for repair thanks to the RROD) and did a 1GB install...for what?

@Kyolux: While I don't totally agree, I'm glad you brought up the PSX Spider-Man, that game was great and is highly unrated. I loved the combat in that game, and it was definitely better than the boring Spider-Man 2 game (fortunately that game was extra short).

@hot_heart: Are you kidding me? I had about 8 complete crashes in about 6 hours of Playtime on my PS3.
One crash was the best. I web slinged into the street, got stuck and could do nothing. Then the game Auto saved. I got nothing left to do, but to reset. After that I loaded the save. Guess what. Insta-death and then? The game freezes, instead of setting you on a roof or something.
I had to load a freaking old save and lost all will to do it again.
Instead I now chose to just swing around the city, when I want to, without ever finishing the game. It's just not worth it.

I've played it. It's not as bad as it once was. It seems there are only invisible cranes he can attach to when there are tall building relatively close to him.
They go away when Spidey exceeds their height. Then it's all about attaching your line to enemies themselves.
