Sony Hoping Gran Turismo 5 Will Be Out Next Christmas
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 9:30 PM on December 1, 2008
Gran Turismo purists should know better than to get your hopes up about GT5's release date, but then, you're a Gran Turismo purist. You can't control yourself.
In an interview with Spanish financial site El Financiero, SCEE's James Armstrong has said that the company expects Gran Turismo 5 to be out next Christmas.
Now, what Sony expect and the traditionally fastidious Polyphony Digital deliver might be two completely different things. But hey, they might not be.
By then it will have been nearly five years since the release of Gran Turismo 4. They can't develop it forever.

GT5 P was the worst Gran Turismo product so far. It has wounded my belief in the all encompassing mastery of this series. I don't believe Polyphony can cut it anymore, and this infinitely extended production is the companies absurdy long death-throe.
My faith has gone. I can't believe in this game anymore...

Damn this is one that I had sort of forgotten about, Sony really have mastered the waiting game. What's even more amazing is how many of us have found the patience to wait for Sony's AAA titles after this much time in the console cycle.
Looking forward to it, hope it's good, hope my 360 gets repaired soon so I can play some games in the mean time.

@TimDJ84: Seriously? It can have every car ever made and then some, and it doesn't mean squat if the game isn't fun.
I'm with a poster up there somewhere, the GT games just aren't fun for me anymore. It feels like they have barely evolved since the first, Polyphony are behind the times man. Forza for me now just has so much more meat to the product, damage, customization, online features, and feels more realistic; surely it is the game to beat. Forza 3 will probably be out by the time GT5 is, so we'll see what happens.
Having said all this...I'm sure I'll purchase GT5 day one lol.

I hope they don't plan to release their whole Christmas lineup in one or two weeks next year as they did this year. Motorstorm, Resistance and LBP never got the the whole PS3 audience's attention and suffered in sales for it. That should teach them a lesson. Spread your stuff out more over at least two or three months.

I was hoping this game would at least release early next year.
Seriously though, I've been loving Forza 2 as a sim fan and by the time GT5 hits Forza 3/PGR5 will be out.
Every racing sim fan knows that Turn 10 has the PGR engine, which is beautiful. We'll probably see their new game, a mix of PGR's great graphics and Forza's physics around the same time.

@Badben: Prologue was a glorified demo. It was not meant to be a full game or represent that it was a full game. For this reason, it was sold at a lower rate than an actual disc-based title. Seems like someone was a bit ill-informed before purchasing prologue.

I've never played any GT game since GT2 for the PS1. That said, I think this'll still be a killer-app for Sony if ever they release it. This and the PSP's GT seems to be taking a loooong time.
Come to think of it. I don't even remember the last time I played a racing game and enjoyed it. Unless it's Kart racing with power-ups or whatnot. Yeah I know it doesn't count and what I just said is irrelevant with the topic at hand...

@Shandy706: It in no way is a demo if you are looking at it from a game perspective. A demo is a small sample of a finished game. However it is a demonstration of what the final game will be eventhough the final game will obviously be a greatly improved version.
Anyways it was sold for cheap. I bought it cause i wanted it and tbh it was well worth the money. I got a good few tracks, a few different modes a mini career and a fully working online mode bar the idiots that ruin it. It also has some other features such as GT TV and the news board and is updated fairly frequently.
Overall i found it worth the money i paid and it is far more than a mere demo. It called PROLOGUE and thats exactly what it is.

from what i can tell, from the devs speaking out, on various news articles, whats taking the time to develop is all the cars.
I'm no braniac, but if that is the issue, and everything else is pretty much done, they would be better off releasing the game, and having a weekly event where they unveil a new car to play and use in the series, it would keep people returning and prolong the longevity of the game as well discourage 2nd sales (which this industry loves sooo much). This approach would also allow the devs to continue to be rigorous in making realistic cars and tweaks.

I was thinking about this the other day, and ended up coming to the conclusion that a December 2009 release is as late as they can really go without being ridiculous. I mean, you don't release a fully-functional, near-final demo missing only the rest of the cars and tracks and then spend two years just modeling. A year maybe, but then that would put GT5 out, uh, now. How long does it take for these guys? I mean, the core 70 cars or whatever was in Prologue, obviously those didn't take forever. For all we know there is some entirely new game mode they're secretly developing or something. But release it already!
I want my Top Gear test track!!!

I don't get why some commenters are complaining that Christmas 2009 is too late and they were hoping for earlier in 2009. Anytime in 2009 would be an ambitious predication. I'm an automobile layman; to me I doubt the Ferrari and the Lamborghini will handle much differently, so I'll pick one out of the several contenders in that group of cars based on it's aesthetics and move on.
Granted the over fanbase generally knows a bit more about cars than me, but I just don't see a number of cars larger than 200 as attractive to purchase moreso as unnessecary glut, especially when like you said it could just be released down the line as downloadable content.

Actually if you wanna go the realism way, there is nothing on xbox, because the xbox wheel is simply garbage. Try a G25 with GT5P and try comparing it to a real racecar feeling, if you've had any, then drive Forza with the 360 wheel, I can assure you, it will feel like a bad toy in comparison to the G25+Gt5P. The lack of third party controller support ruins all racegames, especially sims, for me on 360. Realism isn't in features and damage, it's in how real it feels to control the car.

They're way too slow at releasing the game, by the time it comes out my expectations of a Racing game will not be matched.
that being, i think racing games now should move away from restrictions to track.. and be more MMO Racing... like Test Drive Unlimited was, sure it had bugs, but i seriously loved that game, loads of great cars, great graphics and the ability to just cruise around an island with people online.. a lot more fun than it may sound, i really enjoyed it.
not saying tracks are bad, they aren't but Gran Turismo with all it's realistic cars, would be great in a open-world (as well as the tracks).
By the time GT5 comes out, i think it will be boring since it is not introducing anything new... that hasn't been done before.

It's funny PS3 gets called out for having to wait for its games while games like Huxley, Alan Wake, Splinter Cell, etc. have been delayed just as long if not longer than games anticipated for the PS3. I believe the first two showcased at E3 2005!!! And they're still being waited on.
Just face it, games for this generation takes time for many studios to build on quality. Some can do it much quicker, kudos to them.

You guys are so funny and your memory is short.
This "Glorified Demo" sold more than many (most?) actual games.
GT might not be your thing, but GT5 will sell like hotcakes when it's out.
Americans might like PGR and Forza, but the rest of the world doesn't. I'm not saying PGR is not good, I'm just saying that the Japanese, the Brits, the French and the rest won't care for it once GT is out.
Were have you guys been in the last years? The same "doubt session" happened with GT4. GT is a cult series and it's not going anywhere. And even if it was chased away from the US by our "better-more-fun-to-play" games, we would still hear about it because it'd be one of the best selling series overseas.

@Pizookie:
The difference is constant AAA titles and not having a GAP (that you can feel) between games.
True SIM racing (a full game) is missing from the PS3 lineup.
The 360 has almost no gaps, minus the low number of platformers...but the cheap Wii covers that.
On the PS2 I always had a Great game coming out to hold me over...for say GT2 or 3. This time if I was a PS3 only owner I would feel left out in a number of areas. The 360 is rolling out the RPGs (good and bad), shooters, sports games, family games, arcade games, racing games (SIM AND ARCADE)....at an incredible clip.
It may just be me, but I have a feeling it's coming up with a damage model for so many cars that's really killing the release date. That, and trying to get all the new additions optimized and actually working on the difficult hardware.

@Shandy706: I think you're just arguing exclusives gaps. There are plenty of games I can play on the PS3 without experiencing these so-called gaps in gaming. In fact, I have too many games and not enough time that I've got some games still wrapped and unplayed. Valkyria Chronicles, for instance is still calling for me. I'll blame that on Fallout 3 taking up too much of my time right now.
You make it sound like AAA titles can be made at the snap of a finger.

The level of detail and love that Polyphony has for their products show, which isn't something to be taken lightly. I'm in no hurry to get a PS3, but GT5 has definitely become a reason to file buying a PS3 under "eventually", at least for me.

Its probably nowhere near finished. When they start putting out pictures and videos, then we can start counting the years. Its been a year since GT5P came out, and except for a few loose promises of DLC, there really hasn't been anything on this game since then. And now when Yamauchi was dumb enough to promise cockpit view and damage for each car, they'll never finish it. Im guessing 2010-2011 at best.

@ShimodaNexus: Well said..
Thats what im always trying to explain but its usually to the Forza fanboys and they dont wanna be open minded..
Forza feels like a video game.. Like it was assembled to make money. GT games feel like so much more. Pieces of art. Libraries of infomation. Galleries full of photos.
Forza feels like its intended for people wanna sit down and playing a racing games where as GT games feel like they are created for the "car enthusiast". I dont wanna say it cause ill know it will throw all the people into a hissy fit here but it feels like it was designed for a different, younger, audience.
Its like the difference between a show like Pimp My Ride vs Top Gear. And if you don't know what Top Gear is then thats exactly what im talking about.
And AGAIN I'm not saying one is better then the other, I'm saying that they typically appeal to different audiences. Forza people usually act all hateful and say GT games suck cause they dont dont hentai paintjobs or online demo derbys or body kits.
Don't know why I waste my breath though.. Most people here will label a "fanboy" just because I don't 100% agree with them.

Cant wait for this. Avid player of the GT Series since the beginning.
And people who blow this off as like.. "Oh.. they suck cause they arnt pumping sequels out like Madden.. Wtf is taking them so long?" Your a retard. This game takes massive time.
Forza DOES NOT have enough cars. I have forza and enjoy it but its really just a different game. Thats exactly why GT is such a great series.. They focus on a awesome, quality, deep, bang-for-the-buck game. Where, IMO, Forza feels like an Arcade based series with decent content. The way the game presents itself is too youthful/immature for me. Hard to explain it and im not bashing it. But all my friends agree and we are serious car people.
GT is so fun BECAUSE you find so many cars you have never heard of and your like "Wtf is this thing?" then use it, you read the history on of it, find out what makes it so special.
I don't play GT games for a diehard simulator. Your an idiot if you consider it trying to be that. Thats what the PC games are for. But GT5P with my G25 is just awesome.
As a few of other people in here have already mentioned, just cause you dont like this game, doesnt mean its not going to sell.. GT5 will be awesome for PS3. Lots of people will go buy it around the world.
And as I've said for previous GT games, which is similar to GTA games development speed, the first game on a new system always takes the longest. They have to rebuild it from the ground up. Once GTA3 came out they were pumping new ones out every year. Not to mention I'm sure this is taking so long cause of the multiplayer that all of you want that I could care less about. Because people whine, nag, and complain about no multiplayer in GT4.. now you suffer the consequences and they are doing their best to get it in and make it polished.

@gomerkyle: I'm kind of over the GT series.. what is the draw?.. I dont get it..
GT2 was awesome.. GT3 made me buy a PS2..
It started getting stale at GT4 for me.. I didnt really get too far with it.. getting bored with it..
And now.. what does it offer beyond the previous titles?.. especially since its had us waiting so long..

@dgkz0idberg: I have Motorstorm and MGSIV. You really should get MGSIV. That and Bluray rentals through Netflix are the reasons that my PS3 has been somewhat useful.

I'm really looking forward to this game. The Performance points need to be gone and replaced with damage. Then we have a great game.

I grew up on Gran Turismo.
Then I started playing Forza and I realized how much Gran Turismo pisses me off for not evolving.

@MarGera332:
I've had my PS3 for about a month now and I was wowed by GT5 prologue for about one weekend. Once I got to the S-tune cars it turned into work. It is just too hard and too complicated to be fun. If I wanted a chore to take up my spare time, I'd stay at the office and work for free!
The soundtracks are also very poorly chosen, especially (for me) the irritatingly shrill and repetitive track by Mars Volta... it's like nails on chalkboard.

@zlimness: Not entirely true. Weren't they just demoing an ultra-high-res 2160p version of the GT5 engine running in 4 PS3s?
We hear news. We hear news like that, where they're showing off how high-end their tech has become. We know that they'll be supporting multiple-display aggregation, just like Forza 2's multi-view support, and now we know they'll be considering 2160p support to boot.
These are *sims*, not just games. As such, they get the features you'd expect from the games, but the engines get the features you'd expect from things like Flight Simulator X - designed for very specific environments and showcase uses.
That's just how this market works. A lot of the people who like GT over Forza like it because it has more in common with sims than games; a lot of the people who prefer forza like the game elements (like visible race lines, etc.)
There's a broad spectrum.

So much whining that this isn't out yet. But it's important to remember that I think most people aren't so whiny about this sort of thing, and/or aren't holding their breath for games that aren't out yet.
Meh. If Kojima Productions doesn't release anything until 2012, I'll wait and buy it then. In the meantime, I have a backlog of games and future games I know I want to play.
Anyway. GT games have always looked great to me, but for whatever reason I can't seem to master the driving in them. Maybe I just suck too much, maybe I don't know enough about cars to tune them correctly. I'll probably rent this to try it out in any case.

@Windowlicker: I'm with you there. The 360 wheel feels like it came out of a Christmas Cracker compared to my Logitech one. It's a G-something but I'm not sure which. Bloody good though, solid and powerful. And GT5 feels much more like you're sitting in the driving seat of a car then Forza, this is what a lot of folks just can't seem to understand. It's the fidelity of the whole thing, and the feeling of momentum. Forza's momentum is there but it feels somehow false, and everything understeers everywhere. Understeer understeer understeer. It's dull, particularly as you progress to the faster cars. GT Foever!
OK, now I've dissed the competition a bit I'm starting to feel the GT belief again. Hooray :)

Its polyphony digital, they can take forever. They should pull their finger out and make GTPSP. Nobody cares about GT5 apart from the like 5 owners of a PS3.
