TimeSplitters 4 Concept Art

Posted by Owen Good at 12:00 PM on October 5, 2008

If Haze didn't float your boat, and it didn't float many, Free Radical's right back atcha with TimeSplitters 4. Of course the game has been officially officially known for some time, but FR put up three concept art scans on the official website earlier this week. The chainsaw nun above is one. You can also get a look at some blinged out four-wheel cat ("Cat Racing: Underground") and a dismembered Monkey/Frank n' Furter transvestite robot on a torture rack. If those descriptions don't send you over, I mean, what will. Check also the homage trailer to LucasArts/Revenge of the Sith with Vader's role reprised by, what else, a monkey.

First Bayonetta Footage Is Sexy

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 6:30 PM on October 2, 2008

Ah, our first look at Platinum Games' Bayonetta. Because scans can only convey so much sexy. Sadly it's a sparse, brief trailer, and strangely for a Devil May Cry-kinda game, shows no combat. It does show, however, that the protagonist has one hell of a hip-shaking swagger. Curiously the GameVideos clip isn't embeddable, so hit the link below to watch.

New Bayonetta Scans Are Sexy

Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 11:00 PM on October 1, 2008

Check out these new Famitsu screens of the SEGA published, Platinum Games developed Bayonetta. When our Michael McWhertor checked out the game in August, he said it was the "best looking game" he'd seen at Leipzig. The game features a raven-haired heroine whose long locks of hair double as her clothes and who struts around on a pair of pistol heels. Game looks and sounds hot.

Here Is A Bionic Commando Figure (Right Here)

Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 9:00 PM on October 1, 2008

Capcom has pictures of an Bionic Commandoprototype figure. Imagine that! Must say that the updated character design has grown on me, dreads and all. And this fig looks rather nice. While the Capcom blog did have pictures, it didn't have any release or pricing info. Bummer.

Game & Geek T-shirts From RedBubble

Australian Post Posted by Seamus Byrne at 4:29 PM on October 1, 2008

redbubble-tshirts.jpgThought we should give a shout out to an Aussie designer putting out some T-shirts with a good gamer and geek bent. James Lillis dropped us a note showing off some of his wares, and I figure they cut enough mustard to share. Along with the three designs above, there's plenty more clever references to the likes of The Smurfs, Space Invaders, and even Ronald McDonald subbing in for The Joker. All found on RedBubble, which is a local site for designers to sell their prints and T-shirts. So it's an all local affair, which means faster deliveries and less shipping costs than an overseas alternative.

Here, Your Bionic Commando Box Art

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 8:30 PM on September 30, 2008

Dreads, menacing glare, suspenders, smoking, fresh hot dogs...yup, this is Bionic Commando! Memorise this box art, so you can recognise the game when it hits shelves early next year. 360 version is above, PS3 and PC are after the jump, though don't go expecting any radical differences between the three.

A Few Approaches to 'Games as Art'

Posted by Maggie Greene at 4:30 AM on September 29, 2008

'Matthew Wasteland' of Magical Wasteland has a thought provoking essay up over at GameSetWatch on how we think of games as art — and why it may not work, or what our current limitations are. His opinion is the more we think about this stuff, the more we can work on overcoming current problems — certainly not an unreasonable point of view. My favourite section was on the problem of 'systems as art' (his example is a little gem called The Marriage, which is lacking in context to say the least) — a pretty nice critique of some of the intentionally 'artistic' games that seek to 'rise above' the entertaining masses:

In case you missed it amongst the flood of Level 5 news that hit the other day, the RPG powerhouse have teamed with Studio Ghibli to bring us Ninokuni, for the Nintendo DS. And...yeah, that's all you (and we) need to know before setting some money aside. While we wait to check the game out at TGS next month, you can check out these first screens for the game, along with some concept art and some shots of the game's magnificent packaging.

Holy Crap! Spore Created StarCraft Amazes Us

Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 4:00 PM on September 26, 2008

The great thing about Spore is all the stuff we can make. No, make that, the great thing about Spore is all the stuff really talented people can make. Check out these images from Korean site Ruliweb of in-Spore created Starcraft Terran faction buildings and vehicles. Check out the Vulture, Siege Tank, Goliath, Wraith and Battlecruiser! The attention to detail is astounding. There are three words for this and they are "only in Korea". Have a gander in the gallery below.

In Loving Memory Of The Intro & Cutscene

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 3:30 AM on September 26, 2008

Call me a misty-eyed nostalgic, but for me, the "golden age" of video games is not 2008. Wasn't 2007, wasn't 2004, wasn't 1978. It was the 1990's. Where, as a predominantly PC gamer, I was treated to not only some of the greatest games of all time from companies like Lucasarts, Origin and Bullfrog, but some of the most entertaining attempts at story-telling and world-building as well.

Forget Half Life 2's train ride. Forget Halo 3's bombastic aspirations. I'm talking about the cinematic introduction sequence, and its little brother, the cinematic cutscene.

More Halo MMO Concepts: Revenge of Mistress Chief

Posted by Michael McWhertor at 10:20 AM on September 25, 2008

Yesterday, we showed you some of the early concept artwork for the canned massively multiplayer online project set in the Halo universe. The MMO, codenamed "Orion" and at one point in development at the soon-to-be-shuttered Ensemble Studios, was scrapped after making it to a "working multi-player prototype."

The artwork we showed you yesterday focused on specific character class designs, weapons and vehicles, but new images, which appear to be from the same Halo MMO project, offer a broader, more conceptual look at "Orion."

While the previous concepts have found more derision than we were expecting, these may appeal more to the Halo-loving audience, borrowing already familiar elements and reinterpreting them to fit into the MMO mold.

Street Fighter IV Box Art: Which Is Worse?

Posted by Stuart Houghton at 8:40 AM on September 24, 2008

Oh, come on Capcom - you can do better than this, surely?

This dodgy diptych of box art features a slightly too muscular Chun Li (c'mon she may be a strong lass, but as drawn here she could throw shot at the Moscow Olympics) a Ryu who looks like he is trying to do long division in his head and typography that looks like the artist was doodling band logos during double geography.

If you look closely, you will see that Ken is striking exactly the same pose (even down to the spray of mud at his heels) when fighting both Chun Li and Ryu at the bottom of their boxes.

Ryu, incidentally, is demonstrating an ancient fighting technique, known in the East as Goatse Hadouken.

The Characters Of Persona 4

Posted by Mike Fahey at 2:20 AM on September 24, 2008

Persona 4 for the PS2 is still an agonizingly long 2+ months away, and the folks at Atlus have decided to make the wait just a little bit tougher by releasing character profiles for the main protagonists in the game. Chie, Yosuke, and Yukiko join the protagonist on the trail of a serial murderer who strikes in their small town of Inaba. Of course it wouldn't be a Persona game without something bizarre thrown into the mix, and that's where Teddie here comes in. It's apparently a mysterious creature that the group meets inside the TV. What exactly that means is up to us to discover, or our Japanese-fluent friends to completely spoil for us.

New Screens Raise Argonauts Higher

Posted by Mike Fahey at 1:20 AM on September 23, 2008

Hercules is so huge! Look at him! That guy could eat Schwarzenegger for lunch and still have room for Kevin Sorbo, but to be fair there's really always room for Kevin Sorbo. Codemaster's Rise of the Argonauts has quickly risen in my opinion over the last few months, ever since I got to see the game in action during E3. What I initially thought to be a cheap attempt to capitalise on the popularity of God of War is shaping up to be one of my most eagerly anticipated titles of the year. If the gameplay is up to par with the art direction seen in these new screenshots, I will not be disappointed.

SNK Talk KOFXII's Gorgeous, Gorgeous Graphics

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 10:20 PM on September 19, 2008

You know one of the key differences between product and art? It's in the craftsmanship. Lots of people can churn out a 3D model of an alien, few can hand-draw and then animate lush, vibrant, 2D sprites. So those that can, we treasure. And we treasure SNK! Speaking yesterday at the Tokyo Amusement Show, King Of Fighters XII producer Masaaki Kukino spoke at length about not just their upcoming fighter, but its "traditional" graphics:

Overall, it's a very hard process that could take 16 months for even an experienced designer to do alone. In terms of data, the character size is about four times larger [than in previous installments]. But when considering the extra errors that come about in doing the [bigger] pixel art, the trouble is more than four times what it used to be.

Each character in KOFXII has around 400 to 600 [sprite] patterns. Every single one of them is hand-drawn, and it's something that we're proud of. I'll only say it here, but we believe that this is something that no other company can imitate, something that only SNK Playmore can do.

Amazing.

New Fable II Screens Bring The Spooky

Posted by Michael McWhertor at 10:20 AM on September 16, 2008

Maybe I haven't been paying close enough attention, but when I think of Fable II, I think of bright lit hills, cobblestone paths and cheery townsfolk of hobbit proportions. I don't think of glowing-eyed, pig-tailed specter girls and creepy goblins at twilight. Thanks, new screens from the Xbox 360 exclusive. You've forced me to take another look at Fable II.

Gunpei Yokoi Remembered In Papercraft

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 4:00 PM on September 12, 2008

This is a papercraft model of Nintendo's own late, great Gunpei Yokoi. Considering the amount of papercraft we see that's devoted to Nintendo characters, it's a strangely fitting tribute to the father of the Game & Watch, Game Boy, Metroid and Kid Icarus. Commander Keen Pastes It Up In Adelaide

Australian Post Posted by Logan Booker at 1:30 PM on September 12, 2008

keen_big.jpgThat's Commander K. alright! He's tearing it up as art all over the streets of Adelaide, running, standing, jumping and pogo-sticking his way between brick walls, street signs and other urban areas. Even pixelated, he's still cute as a 2D button.

The gallery's dated April 2008, but that doesn't stop it from being both awesome and sweet. You can visit it via the link below, or hit the jump for some instant additional pics.

Super Papercraft Mario: The Hat!

Posted by Michael McWhertor at 12:40 PM on September 11, 2008

If you're looking for something to do with your Wednesday night's wee hours, perhaps the pasting together of dozens of pieces of paper to form a DIY Mario cap will do the trick. This is papercraft not for the faint of heart, but one of the rare wearable pieces of video game papercraft that we've seen in our travels on the internet. Should you have the patience to download the PDFs and the printer ink to power through, be sure to tip us with your creation. We'd love to see the soul brave enough to take this project on.

Midnight Club Los Angeles Australian Box Art

Australian Post Posted by Logan Booker at 1:00 PM on September 4, 2008

mc_boxart_small.jpgRockstar has sent through the Oz box art for its upcoming racing title, Midnight Club Los Angeles. Unsurprisingly, it contains a shot of a car and... a Classification Board sticker! Heart-pumping stuff, I know.

I've included a larger shot after the jump, if you'd like to use it as a centred wallpaper or something.

New Games, Remade As Game Boy Games, Results Are Awesome

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 4:00 PM on August 28, 2008

These are courtesy of the kids over at Pixelation's forums. Last year, they ran a little contest. See who could come up with the best mock-ups for a remake - or demake - of a game crammed onto the original Game Boy. While some are unrecognisable, and a few are only "OK, I guess", the rest are "totally awesome, I guess". Especially the BioShock one. The rest of them to can be found at Pixelation's site.

Final Web Of Shadows Box Art Decided

Posted by Mike Fahey at 3:20 AM on August 28, 2008

The votes have been tallied, and to my great surprise and dismay, the Spider-Man: Web of Shadows box art has been chosen by the fans themselves, and they chose...poorly. I suppose in all fairness the two choices we were presented weren't all that great in the first place - it was either Spider-Man holding a dome-less snow globe or Spider-Man with concept art for arms. I was leaning towards the snow globe myself, but Wolverine and Venom together on one cover is kind of hard to resist.

Besides, when you've got as good of a game inside as I played at the Games Convention in Leipzig, you could ship it in a plain cardboard sleeve and I'd still be there on launch day to pick up the special corrugated edition.

Look At This New Halo Movie Concept Art!

Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 2:00 PM on August 26, 2008

That other Halo movie, the one that was going to be directed by Neill Blomkamp, that one's on indefinite hold. So, fat chance on seeing that at your local cineplex anytime soon. But that other Halo movie, the one written by Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl writer Stuart Beattie, that one still has a chance in hell. See, Halo fan Beattie has written a "spec" script based on Eric Nylund's book, Halo: The Fall of Reach. Beattie wrote the script between film projects on the hopes that someone somewhere will bring it to the silver screen. So far, it's apparently still only a spec. Hit the jump for some movie concept art for the film version of Halo: The Fall of Reach.
