Hands On: Call of Duty World at War

Australian Post Posted by Seamus Byrne at 1:50 PM on October 3, 2008

Berlin-1.jpgFirst impressions? Epic. We took on two missions from the latest Call of Duty and the settings alone show how far and wide CoD:WaW takes you. The first was a Pacific Theatre battle between the US and Japan, starting in a jungle and moving through Japanese fortifications to take an airfield. The second is near the end of the war, as you play the Russians on the streets of Berlin.

The level designs are both dense and expansive, with a lot going on and rapid response required as you move from zone to zone. The pacing felt good on these two levels, with fresh weapons to pick up and work with so you don't have a chance to feel like you're on cruise control. And I'm pretty sure we pulled some stunts with the very nice flamethrower (that runs on an overheat recharge rather than ammunition) that should not be allowed under the Geneva Convention.

With the level breakdown looking like an exploration of some of the most important campaign efforts across the globe, there is little in the way of a storyline to thread the game together (except the grand sweep of progress in World War II), the file footage introductions to missions and the scale of each mission means this will be a very nice game to play.

These Far Cry 2 Screens Will Shoot You in The Throat

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 5:30 PM on September 30, 2008

Or, at least, shoot her in the throat. As for the other screens, they're a selection of real, in-game shots, so what you see here will be what you see when the game comes out. And what we see here - lazy sunsets as we drift lazily down a river - looks gorgeous. There's a few screens below, with plenty more at the link underneath.

BioShock For PS3 Goes Gold, Demo Hits Thursday

Posted by Michael McWhertor at 5:30 AM on September 30, 2008

Heads up, kids. According to official word from 2K Games, the PlayStation 3 port of BioShock has "gone gold," with a shiny master disc containing final code of the game probably being transported by aluminium brief case from 2K Marin to the manufacturing plant right now. It's likely handcuffed to a trained courier who has authority to shoot you should you come within ten yards of the golden disc. Seriously, that's how this stuff works.

If you want to get a taste of last year's Xbox 360 super hit, a demo will be hitting the PlayStation Store in North America this Thursday. BioShock hits retail in North America on October 21 and goes global on October 17. Who's buying?

Leaked CoD: World at War Perk List?

Posted by Owen Good at 2:00 AM on September 29, 2008

PlayStation Universe says it has dug up the perk list for Call of Duty: World at Warand it looks legit enough, but without sourcing or confirmation, we're gonna call this rumour, same as other set lists, trophies, achievements and such. If it's on the level, then for everyone who resented Juggernaut and Martyrdom, those are back, so have fun. The full list is on the jump. Call of Duty: World at War drops Nov. 11 in North America, Nov. 12 in Australia, and Nov. 14 in Europe, on the 360, Wii, PS3, PC and DS.

Bungie May Need To Rethink Part Of That Teaser Trailer

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 5:30 PM on September 26, 2008

No doubt the more fanatical amongst you have already dissected every last frame of today's Halo 3 teaser from Bungie. While dissecting, however, did you catch this line? Says, quite clearly, "MADDIE, WHERE ARE YOU?". Now, in all likelihood, this'll have something to do either with somebody/something in the game called Maddie, or at the least some obscure, related facet of the Haloverse. It's just a shame nobody at Bungie was aware of the high-profile 2007 disappearance of British toddler Madeline McCann, who was commonly referred to in the media as simply "Maddie", because that's the first thing I thought of when I saw the words. Second thing was "ooo, that might be a little much". An "oops, awful coincidence, that" message from Bungie couldn't hurt. Provided it was an accident, at any rate.

UPDATE: Bungie has responded to the similarity, calling the reference "an unfortunate and unintended coincidence".

Blackshot FPS Enters Closed Beta - Screens Ahoy!

Posted by Stuart Houghton at 6:20 AM on September 26, 2008

Outspark has launched a closed PC Beta of its free-to-play online FPS Blackshot. The beta is open from September 30th until October 5th and features 4 selectable characters, 7 maps and 17 different weapons.

Outspark have sent us a load of screenshots showing off the mercenary-based online antics. It does, it has to be said, look fairly generic - but it is free and as ever with shooters the proof of the pudding is in the gameplay.

You can sign up for the closed beta via the game's website. If you don't get in, remain calm - it will be followed by an open beta later in the year.

Bungie Secret Game is a 'New Halo 3 Campaign Experience'

Posted by Brian Crecente at 1:20 AM on September 26, 2008

Tipster Nick F points out that the Bungie teaser for the new whatever the studio is working on just hit Xbox Live. With it comes this succinct, but a bit more to the point description:

"High action and deep mystery await players in the new Halo 3 campaign experience. Prepare to Drop!"

So does that mean an expansion pack and not that Mario-esque Halo platformer I've been dreaming about? Only time will tell.

Mirror's Edge To Inspire Future Battlefield Games

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 9:30 PM on September 25, 2008

Remember: DICE are developing Mirror's Edge now, but once that's done, they'll be back to working on their bread & butter, the Battlefield series. And once they go back, they'll be taking some of Mirror's Edge with them, in the form of the game's sense of "physicality". DICE's Owen O'Brien:

I'm not sure [about] wall-running, but certainly the others — certainly the sense of physicality in the world: the running, jumping, vaulting, [and] sliding...I think, yeah, we will definitely try to incorporate them into future Battlefield games.

Shame. No wall-running? Battlefield could really have done with a parkour class, would have blown the game wide open.

EA Honors Ten Years Of 'Medal'

Posted by Stuart Houghton at 5:20 AM on September 25, 2008

Next year, Medal of Honour turns ten years old. Has it really been that long? Strange to think that the Medal of Honour series has been going on longer than the war that it depicts.

Anyway, EA have decided to mark the occasion by releasing a boxed-set Special Edition of the 5 PC games in the series - Medal of Honour Allied Assault, Medal of Honour Spearhead, Medal of Honour Breakthrough, Medal of Honour Pacific Assault Director's Edition, and Medal of Honour Airborne.

You will also take home a soundtrack CD, strategy guides, DVD documentaries and interviews with WWII veterans (doubtless overjoyed by having their memories turned into a video game) and other MoH bits and bobs for just $39.

It is out now in the US - no word yet on a rest-of-the-world release.

Today, Halo 3 Got A Bunch Of New Stuff

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 12:20 PM on September 24, 2008

Let's put aside all this Halo MMO talk for a minute. And speculation over the next Halo game. And concentrate on something that actually exists, and actually came out, and that people actually play: Halo 3. Bungie have released the game's second title update, which along with some behind-the-scenes tinkering also brings playlist ratings and a range of new achievements. Ten of them, you'll find listed on Bungie's website, while if you log in you'll find others that aren't. What's the deal? From the sounds of it, they're for new, unannounced maps Bungie are working on. There'll be more on those when Bungie "have a release plan finalised with our publisher".

Valve: Team Fortress 2 Updates Not Coming To PS3 Orange Box

Posted by Michael McWhertor at 9:40 AM on September 24, 2008

We can't say we didn't see it coming, but to hear, straight from the mouths of Valve's Doug Lombardi and Gabe Newell, that PlayStation 3 owners are going to get the shit end of the Team Fortress 2 stick still hurts. I *have* that version! I also have the Steam and Xbox 360 versions, but still... ouch.

1UP confirmed with Gabe and Doug that the updates PC users are currently enjoying, which are coming to the 360 later this year simply won't be hitting the PS3. Why? Valve simply has no PS3 manpower to speak of. And EA is "not doing ongoing development on The Orange Box" on Sony's box.

It's simple really. We just hope that the boys and girls at EA do right by the few of us who opted for the PS3 SKU — and will think about this kind of stuff in the future.

Resistance 2 Brings MMO Sensibilities to the World of Shooter Coop

Posted by Brian Crecente at 8:20 AM on September 24, 2008

Resistance 2 offers gamers a suite of experiences, a collection of modes that alone feel almost like stand-alone titles, but together compliment each other in a way that gives the shooter some major staying power.

Yesterday Insomniac president Ted Price told a gathering of game writers that their upcoming shooter will be the studio's "biggest and best game we've ever made."

And it's not just because the developer feels they hit it out of the ballpark with the game's single-player experience, or that they think their game offers the deepest multiplayer competitive mode around. It's also because the game's cooperative mode, which seems to tap into the dungeon-crawling, monster-bashing roots of massively multiplayer online games.

Topping all of that off, Price said, is an upcoming community portal which will include live game stats and some things other game portal sites haven't done before.

More Bungie Teaser Shenanigans

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 4:00 PM on September 23, 2008

Hey, look, more digital prick-teasing, courtesy of Bungie. Can't say I'm the biggest fan of this type of shameless hype-mongering, but then, there are no doubt clues/leads as to what this all means scattered throughout this latest update, so I can post it and call it a...public service announcement. If anyone's in the mood to speculate madly, I'm just going to throw my hat in and remind you that while Americans may think "maintenance" when you hear Superintendant, it can also be a rank in the police/prison service. Just some food for thought.

Duke Nukem 3D Kicks XBLA Arse This Wednesday

Posted by Mike Fahey at 2:20 AM on September 23, 2008

Here's here to kick arse and chew bubblegum, and he's all out of gum! Duke Nukem makes his triumphant return to the gaming scene this week as Duke Nukem 3D this Wednesday for a measly 800 Microsoft points. The game features the tried and true gameplay of the original, along with 8 players co-op and DukeMatch games via Xbox Live, and the ability to save your matches and share them with friends. They've even added some technical improvements to the game in the form of controller vibration, bilinear filtering, motion blur, and Xbox Live Vision Camera support for those of you who want to add hand-motions to your trash talking.

It might not be Duke Nukem Forever, but then again what is yet?

Brothers In Arms Trailer Not For The Squeamish

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 2:30 PM on September 20, 2008

And here I was thinking Brothers In Arms was all about the camaraderie, the historical accuracy. All they focus on here is exploding Germans and excessive gore. Sure, maybe that's realistic, too, in its own way, but all the slo-mo and disintegrating heads and gratuitous dismemberment comes off looking more Soldier Of Fortune than Band of Brothers.

Frontlines Map Pack Hits Xbox Live

Posted by Mike Fahey at 3:20 AM on September 20, 2008

Anyone out there still playing Frontlines: Fuel of War? Yes you, in the back. This post is for you then. THQ would like $10 from you so you can play the game on four all new maps with that other guy who is playing. I hear he's already buying it, so you might as well. Four new maps have shown up on Xbox Live this morning, containing two large-scale maps, Wide Awake and Hindsight, and two smaller-scale maps, Infiltration and Sunder. The pack weighs in at 800 points, but that's a small price to pay to get that other guy to quit whining about knowing all the maps already.

Oh, and in case you thought I forgot, arr, matey.

Far Cry 2 Comes In Four Multiplayer Flavors

Posted by Mike Fahey at 1:20 AM on September 20, 2008

Eurogamer today hosted another of their LiveText chat sessions, this time around putting Far Cry 2 producer Louis-Pierre Pharand under the spotlight to answer questions about the fiery sequel. During the chat, Pharand spoke a bit about the multiplayer modes included in the game. The standard Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch modes will be joined by Capture The Diamond, which is like capture with flag only you're tasked with capturing a magical mushroom diamond instead, and a variation on VIP they've christened Uprising. He also discussed persistency, which will apparently be contained to the match or series of matches you are involved in, much like Shadowrun.

"We decided that all persistency will occur within a match or a define series of matches," Pharand added. "That way, gamers will have a taste of all our great guns quickly. You will get upgrades within classes and it will allow you to be more tactical in your progression, depending of the type maps you play."

Hmm. Wasn't a bit fan of Shadowrun. Then again, Shadowrun didn't come with acres of grassy plains to set fire to, so it balances out.

"When you blast something, you want to see lots of chunks" This quote - directly from the video above - is going to haunt me in my dreams for a very long time. In fact, I'm actually going to put a word of caution on both of these videos. Not because of the violence, but because if you don't want to know anything about the game, you might want to skip these two. They have tons of information regarding the new weapons and finishing moves you'll find in Gears 2. Second video after the jump.

Here's Why Brothers In Arms Was Delayed

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 9:30 PM on September 18, 2008

Brothers in Arms: Hells Highway was originally due in 2006. It'll be out next week, in 2008, so there's been a fairly sizeable delay on Gearbox's end. What caused the holdup? According to Gearbox, it was a combination of the multiplatform development and the Unreal Engine 3.0. They bought the engine off the shelf, and having never developed for any PlayStation console, let alone the PS3, soon realised they'd bitten off more than they could chew. Cue the delays. Game director Jeramy Cooke says this was pretty much the only hold-up, however, as the actual game design went smoothly, so don't let your hopes for the game get all limp and lifeless just yet.

Posted by Adam Barenblat at 10:00 AM on September 18, 2008

Every once in a while I'll get a trailer that catches me off guard and that being said, Call of Duty: World at War looks pretty darn good. The game's visuals seem to be top notch and the four player co-op via split-screen or online is definitely appealing. Unfortunately, we all have to wait until November 11th to get our hands on the game.
