2.40 Fix Coming ‘Midweek’

Sony’s big 2.40 update for the PS3 has been down since the middle of last week, following some issues a few users had while trying to install the firmware. When, then, can we expect a fix? Around the same time this week, if Sony’s customer support are to be believed. They say that firmware 2.41 – which will fix the busted 2.40 – will be out “midweek”. Unless they’re making that up, an official announcement from Sony on the matter should turn up later today.

2.40 Dojo – Yes, time to kick off another Dojo! As you’d be aware, Sony’s new-fangled 2.40 firmware for the PS3 was up, then down, and now, two days on, is still down. With no word from Sony, other than that they’re “working on it”. Hope they can get it up soon, be nice to spend the long weekend with it.

Why We May Not Get Decent Trophy Support For A While

Sony’s 2.40 firmware – whenever it comes back to us, at any rate – allows the implementation of achievement-style trophies to your user account. Like achievements, it’ll probably turn out to be a successful move, convincing PS3 owners to spend more time with their games than they may otherwise have without them. But with the trophy system having to be manually added to each game already out on the PS3, when can we realistically expect most games to include the feature? Well, realistically, not soon, and Insomniac’s Bryan Intihar gives us the perfect example why, posting on the PlayStation Blog:

Currently, there are no plans to add trophies to [Resistance] and [Ratchet & Clank]. Right now, our No. 1 focus is finishing [Resistance 2] and making it the best game possible.

Suggesting that, sadly (for you), implementing them takes longer than five minutes, and that Insomniac – like a lot of develolpers, we’re sure – have more pressing matters to attend to.

2.40 Firmware Now Out – Yeah, we got it. Thanks. As promised, and advertised, Sony have released firmware 2.40 for the PS3. Go knock yourselves out.

Uncharted Next Game To Receive Trophy Support

Because Sony’s trophy system is only being implemented now, a bunch of games have already been released that don’t make use of the feature. Meaning developers will need to go back and bolt on trophy support in their own time. So when 2.40 becomes available, which games will have them, and which ones won’t? While Sony released a preliminary list of titles that will be the first to implement trophies the other day, they’ve since added one more: our 2007 NQGOTY, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, which “will also receive a patch at some point in the foreseeable future”.

Wonder about firmware release dates no more, PS3 owners. The console’s 2.40 update – which will bring trophy support, in-game XMB access and limited custom soundtracks – will be out this Wednesday, July 2. That date comes straight from Sony. We suggest you spend those two days wisely. Spending them copying your entire CD collection over to your PS3 is not – as any 360 owner will tell you – spending it wisely.

Rumour: Full 2.40 Revisions List Leaked, Due Around E3

According to CVG, the much-hyped PS3 firmware update to 2.40 – the one that’ll bring trophies and in-game XMB access – won’t be launching “soon”. Instead, Sony will be holding it back, and launching it around the time of the company’s E3 address in three weeks time. They also claim to have gotten hold of the final list of features contained within the update. It’s a literal list of updates – meaning the exact function of some of them is unclear – but hey, use your imagination.

So, the in-game XMB will supposedly let you access the following commands:

* Friend category
* View, send, receive messages
* Manage downloads
* Set the vibration feature of the controller
* Sign in to PlayStation Network
* Register friends
* Manage Bluetooth devices
* Terminate the game
* Music category
* Use the system BGM
* Work the system BGM operation panel
* Settings category
* Assign controllers
* View profiles
* Game category
* Set audio devices
* Use the voice changer

Some are exciting! Some aren’t. Though the fact anything is exciting in a firmware update should count for something, I guess.
