In 1988, Taito released Akira, cash-in on the hugely-popular animated film of the same name. Just in case you were wondering if Japanese developers somehow made better movie adaptations in the 1980s, no, they did not. The game was terrible.
Because, damn, there really should be. This do-it-yourself LEGO take on Kaneda’s bike from Akira was spotted by Hobby Media‘s Francesco Fondi and it’s fantastic.
Internet person Arkøv created this wonderful Akira diorama, complete with concrete rubble, Akira, a flowing cape, Kaneda, and a laser cannon. Pew. Pew.
Most bottle water ads are boring — ditto for in Japan. But thankfully Japanese animation studio 4°C rolled up its sleeves and created this anime commercial for Volvic bottled water.
This might not be Neo-Tokyo, but that sure looks like Shotaro Kaneda’s bike in cyberpunk anime Akira. Masashi Teshima from Fukuoka, Japan thought he’d like an Akira bike for himself and spent seven years and ¥10 million (US$121,000) to make it.
Katsuhiro Otomo, the creator of Akira, is working on a new manga. It’s set in the Meiji Era, it’s a shonen manga, and it’s his first long-form manga since his iconic Akira. [Japanator]
So says a white guy, but stay with me. Hollywood is on the prowl, turning Japanese manga and anime into movies. And yet the star factory, once again, cannot find a Japanese person to find a Japanese character.
It’s one of the defining works of modern popular culture, and features plenty of stylised, graphic action. So why is it nobody has ever made a good game out of Katsuhiro Otomo’s Akira?
