The Best And Worst Of Widescreen Gaming On The PC

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 2:30 PM on October 29, 2008

While it's fairly common these days for console games (Wii excepted) to launch with widescreen/16:9 support, PC games aren't so fortunate. Even in 2008, with widescreen monitors becoming so popular that even the Xbox 360 natively supports many of their resolutions, a ton of PC games don't ship with proper widescreen support. Widescreen Gaming Forum to the rescue!. If there's a workaround, you'll find it there. If there's complaining to be had, it'll start there. So it's great seeing that the site have just held their first "Widescreen Gaming Awards", to both honour and shame the best and worst in supporting widescreen gaming on the PC.

Golden Joystick Voting Ends Next Week

Posted by Mike Fahey at 4:00 AM on October 21, 2008

It's your last chance to try desperately to make your voice heard in the 26th Annual Golden Joystick Awards. The world's longest-running video game awards have once again broken their voting record, with nearly 800,000 votes submitted so far. I sincerely doubt they'll be able to break their target of 1 million before voting ends on the 27th of December, but by gum they're pulling out all the stops trying, offering up prizes for every 10,000th vote submitted.

The results of the inauguaral PAX 10 indie games showcase are in and the audience has spoken. 10 games won spots on display at the 2008 Penny Arcade Expo, where convention goers were asked to cast secret ballots selecting their favourite of the lot, and Twisted Pixel's XBLA action platformer The Maw came out on top.

Behold, Leipzig's Best In Show

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 9:30 PM on August 25, 2008

What would a games show be without awards? We wouldn't know. Haven't really seen one without awards. Don't think the back-of-the-box art bullet point teams would stand for a show without them. So without further ado, here are the Best In Show winners from the Leipzig GC last week! Sure, none of them are new games, but they're still the best games the show had, so give them all a round of applause.

Best PC Game: Spore

Best 360 Game: Mirror's Edge

Best PSP Game: Resistance: Retribution

Best PS3 Game: LittleBigPlanet

Best Wii Game: Skate It

Best DS Game: Sonic Chronicles (or, its more awesome German name, SONIC CHRONICLES: Die Dunkle Bruderschaft)

Best Mobile Game: Pro Evo 2009

Halo 3 Beats Out GTA IV, Portal, Wii Fit For Edge Innovation Award

Posted by Michael McWhertor at 5:40 AM on August 12, 2008

UK outlet Edge has declared that Bungie's mega-blockbuster Halo 3 "does most to further the creative culture of gaming" by awarding it the Edge Award for Interactive Innovation at the Edinburgh Interactive Festival today. The Xbox 360 game beat out Grand Theft Auto IV, Portal, Rock Band, Super Mario Galaxy and Wii Fit to secure the honour, with Edge writing that it's "the integration and coherence of Halo 3's online content that makes the game stand apart".

"Space marines? Again?! Innovative?!?" you may be thinking. Edge obviously responds "Yes!" declaring that the sci-fi first person shooter demonstrates an "unparalleled understanding of the potential for console online play". Should you need further justification to help calm your nerves, Edge has 'em. Whether you'll agree... well, that's up to you.

And The G-Phoria Winners Are...

Posted by Mike Fahey at 12:40 AM on August 9, 2008

Weren't those G-Phoria awards exciting last night? I was on the edge of my seat the entire time! Okay, I was at Walmart buying cat litter, but I did brush precariously close to some seats in the office furniture section. So what did I miss? Nintendo getting shut out of every award except best racing game for Mario Kart Wii for one...an award it really didn't deserve. Rock Band and Grand Theft Auto IV each came away with three awards, with Metal Gear Solid 4 and Call of Duty 4 taking home two each. For those keeping track, that's seven awards to games that were number four in their respective series. It was a year of damn fine sequels, wasn't it? Turok walked away with the coveted Uwe Boll Film Award, which seems far more fitting than Skate winning Best Sports Game.

Keep in mind that these awards are all voted on by viewers, so the Game of the Year Award winner should be a pretty good indicator of the sort of audience G4 has left after they hacked away most of the good bits. And the winner is...Halo 3. Really. Hit the jump for the full awards listing.
