Bargain Hunter: What’s In This New Big W Catalogue?

Thought I’d highlight some of the deals in the latest Big W catalogue, which runs until Wednesday next week. We’ll focus on the – pick a console, any console – Xbox 360 offers today.

Not sure what to make of the console bundle they’re offering. Sure, you get FIVE games packed in – Halo 3, Gears 2, Forza 3, Pure and LEGO Batman, all of them good – for $428. But it’s the old 60GB console, not the 120GB Elite. At least it’s not the old old 20GB console, but still.

On the software side, there’s a bunch of games going for $40, including Prototype (pictured), GTA IV, Prince of Persia, Mini Ninjas, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 and, er… Transformers, amongst others.

And the wireless network adaptor is $108, which is only slightly less of a rip-off than the $149 RRP.

Bargain Hunter: Hold Off On That Halo Purchase

Until Thursday, anyway, for that’s when the new Big W catalogue kicks in.

Halo 3: ODST was released last night. It retails for $99.95, but you can get it for a bit cheaper than that right now. Or, if you wait until Thursday, you can get it for much cheaper at Big W.

$68, to be exact.

Or you can get it for free when you buy the Elite console bundle for $398. And get Call of Duty: World at War throw in too.

Bargain Hunter: Hey, It’s Another Elite Bundle

That scan right there is from the Big W catalogue starting September 24. It’s got a pretty good deal on the Xbox 360 Elite.

As you know, come September 22, the Elite is dropping to $449. And up until October 20, Microsoft are throwing in a free copy of Halo 3: ODST.

But Big W are going one better. From September 24, you not only get Halo 3: ODST, but Call of Duty: World At War as well.

AND… you only pay $398.

So they’re basically paying you $50 to take World At War off their hands. Cheers, Big W!

Forget about a $99 PS2! How about an Xbox 360 for $278? Cheapo from CheapOzGamer has let us know that Big W is currently selling the console for this low, low price. Heck, at $278, it’s in close competition with the Wii!

Australian Stores Running Short On PS3s?

Reader Brendan says that a friend of his has had a great deal of trouble getting his hands on a PS3. In preparation for the release of Metal Gear Solid 4, said friend tried EB Games to preorder the console bundle. Not only did the friend have no luck with the preorder, but it was a no-go on a standalone console. Calls to Big W, K-mart and GameTraders were met with similar failure, with GT going as far as to say that the MGS4 pack may miss its release date due to shortages of the console.

So, I gave a couple of JB Hi-Fi and EB Games stores a call in Sydney and was told that they had units in stock, though EB Games said it was only a few and the GTA IV bundle was sold out. Given the success of Rockstar’s title, I wasn’t surprised.

Even though it was looking like there wasn’t much to Brendan’s rumour, I fired an email to Sony’s local branch. Here’s the reply I received:

Due to the success of the latest GTA IV and GT5 Prologue bundle offers, stock has been flying off the shelves and also, hand in hand with their success, we’ve seen an increase in consumer demand for standalone PS3 consoles. We’re very aware of the demand and are working closely with retail to ensure good stock supply.

Well. Going by this response Sony might have some issues on its hands with some stores, but it’s doing its best to keep retailers in supply. I know things are swell in Sydney, but let us know what the situation’s like around you!

Get Australian GTA IV For $78 At Big W

If you’re still looking to pick up Grand Theft Auto IV and don’t mind the Australian version, Big W is selling the game for $78. Not convinced, here’s the page with tasty confirmation.

Maths not being my strongest subject, I whacked this one into the calculator. It works out to be $41 off the RRP. I’m sure there are other retailers selling it for below what Rockstar’s asking, but this is the lowest I’ve seen.

Guitar Hero III Bundle for $98?

Anthony over at EcoGamer has let us know that Big W will be having a one-day sale on November 10, where thrifty gamers will be able to pick up any of the Guitar Hero III game plus guitar combos for a tasty $98.

I don’t think I need to explain how awesome a deal this is.

So find the willpower to wait three days after the official release on the 7th, and save about $50!
