I was browsing the Fort Bliss PX with my folks yesterday when I stumbled across this bad boy: An “Xbox 360 Military Appeciation Bundle.”
Viz Media isn’t going to let the lackluster reception Xbox 360 RPG Blue Dragon received in here in the states keep them from licensing the hell out of the property. Today they’ve announced a partnership with Konami Digital Entertainment to create and distribute a Blue Dragon collectible card game throughout North America, making that one aisle in Walmart just a bit more blue. Excited? No? Well KDE’s Card Division VP Yumi Hoashi definitely is. “We look forward to reaching out to an array of players of all ages and sharing the excitement of the group-oriented role playing card game, Blue Dragon. It is our expectation that the character designs of esteemed creator Akira Toriyama, combined with the unique game play of Blue Dragon, will create countless new fans within the card game community”.
Make no mistake, Blue Dragon was an extremely proficient, well-crafted RPG. It just happens to also be so by-the-book and boring that even writing about a CCG based off of the game is putting me to sleep.
While Blue Dragon didn’t do too much for me as a game, the music was nothing short of wonderful – exactly the sort of thing I’ve come to expect from Final Fantasy legend Nobuo Uematsu. Now you can get all of the music with none of the boring blue gameplay as Sumthing Else Music announces the release of the Blue Dragon Original Soundtrack. Two-discs worth of Uematsu goodness should now be available at retailers nationwide, though knowing how well most shops stock these things you might be better off going for the digital download available from www.sumthingdigital.com for only $US 9.99, or wait for it to show up on iTunes.
Well, they’re scans, but you can still get the gist. Fresh from the latest issue of Famitsu, you can see the action’s going to be isometric. You can also see some new characters have been added to the party lineup, including a friendly poo snake. Because the only thing this franchises’ annoying cast really needed was an accomplice shaped like a pile of shit. If you’re interested in more shots (none gameplay), a larger-sized scan is after the jump.

Xbox Japan just dropped word in our mailbox that the first and second Blue Dragon cartoon episodes will be coming to Xbox LIVE. For free. From November 15th to January 1st, the episodes will be available for download. This generosity is a promotion for the game’s ¥ 2,940 ($US 26) budget priced edition, which goes on sale today in Japan. Later this month, Konami will also put release the fourth volume of the Blue Dragon anime on DVD, along with the volumes already on sale. The fourth volume is limited edition and includes cards from Konami’s BD card game. Konami is also having a giving away a Blue Dragon Core System to one lucky winner.
A smattering of new additions to the Xbox Live Marketplace breathes some new life into older Xbox 360 games Blue Dragon and Spider-Man 3. The latter is enhanced by the downloadable “New Goblin,” formerly a PlayStation 3 exclusive feature but now available to whomever is willing to shell out 240 Microsoft Points. You’ll still have to defeat him in-game to add him to the unlockable character list, but think of the bragging right(s)!
Also available is the “6 Treasures” pack for Mistwalker’s Blue Dragon. For the low, low price of 200 Microsoft Points, you’ll get a half-dozen new items that will boost your stats and give you access to new abilities. The specific details on each are after the jump.
You’re looking at one sad Blue Dragon Happy Meal. Know: Happy Meals in Japan aren’t called “Happy Meal,” but “Happy Sets.” And more often than not, they come in paper bags, not Happy Meal boxes. Besides a card from the Konami-branded Blue Dragon card game (yes, Konami), the meal included some random toy that has nothing to do with Blue Dragon whatsoever. The interesting part? There’s a small flier included with the card. This flier mentions the Blue Dragon anime and the comic book, but says NOTHING of the Xbox 360 game. It’s like the Xbox 360 doesn’t exist or something in Japan! Oh. Wait.
The PSP extends its winning streak to week three as sales of the PSP Slim and the continued love-in for Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII make for strong sales. And look at those Xbox 360 numbers! Over 5,000! In a week, that is, not the total number of Xbox 360s sold to the Japanese. Blue Dragon may have outsold Halo 3 during its first week overseas, but Master Chief is moving consoles.
The Wii was slightly down again, the PlayStation 3 overtook its predecessor and some Game Boy Micros were sold. Your sales chart awaits below.
PSP – 102,809Nintendo DS Lite – 72,895Wii – 24,143PLAYSTATION 3 – 13,105PlayStation 2 – 12,980Xbox 360 – 5,215Game Boy micro – 229Halo 3 may be a current (hit?) Xbox 360 game in Japan, but it’s Blue Dragon that is getting the coveted McDonald’s attention. Now with the Japanese equivalent to a Happy Meal, blooming eaters can get one of five Blue Dragon cards based upon the animated series. OK, we’ll admit it, all Blue Dragon news puts us asleep even if culturally relevant, and we just wrote this whole post to show you one of our favourite pics from Japan after the jump.
Normally, a McDonalds Happy Meal is designed to lure children to McDonalds. Cash in on a popular brand name, sell some burgers, make some kids happy. Not this one. McDonalds Japan are running Blue Dragon Happy Meals, where kids can pony up their parent’s hard-earned yen in exchange for a burger, fries, drink and… Blue Dragon card. Seems odd, since Japan hates the 360 (and thus by extension almost every game it touches), but hey, if shifting some burgers and cards onto unsuspecting kids gets them thinking 360 I’m sure it’ll be mission accomplished for Microsoft.
