Call of Duty: World at War Review: The Modern Warfare Effect

Posted by Brian Crecente at 3:00 AM on November 14, 2008

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare was a marvel. One of the best, I think, games of last year and certainly one of the best in the Call of Duty franchise's history. So how do you top that? Certainly not by having someone else do the next step for Call of Duty and having that step be an about face that returns you to the well-trodden mud, trenches and broken landscape of World War II, right?

Infinity Ward Guy Calls Activision Guy 'Super Douche'

Posted by Owen Good at 1:00 AM on November 9, 2008

Robert Bowling, Infinity Ward's community manager for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, last discussed the topic of douchebaggery with Penthouse Pets Heather Vandeven and Jamie Lynn (pictured) in June. He revisited the subject on his blog yesterday, specifically to call Noah Heller of Activison one. Or well, to rename Heller's job title to "Senior Super Douche." Funny, I thought he was more like the "Senior Producer managing Call of Duty" over there.

Because Zombies + Anything = More Awesomer

Posted by Owen Good at 2:00 AM on October 26, 2008

Revealed on Gametrailers TV overnight -- Call of Duty: World at War will feature a "zombie mode" that's unlocked once you complete the game. It's a four-player co-op mode pitting you against endless waves of Nazi undead. Man, that sounds cool just saying it. The mode features its own economy in which things like buying weapons as well as making barricades and moving obstacles cost money. Yes, flamethrowers are involved.

Kid Goes Missing, Dad Blames Xbox, Call Of Duty

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 5:30 PM on October 21, 2008

15 year-old Brandon Crisp, from Barrie, Canada, ran away from home last Monday, and hasn't been seen since. Why'd he run away? Brandon's father, Steve, says "He left because we took his Xbox away". Seems Brandon was "addicted" to Call of Duty, and the decision to confiscate his "Xbox" sparked the runaway. His father now fears the worst:

My personal feeling is that he's met someone online through this game. As a parent, you fear the worst when you don't hear anything for seven days.

Treyarch To Keep Fighting The Second World War?

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 3:30 PM on October 17, 2008

Series creator Infinity Ward dragged the Call of Duty series out of the Second World War and into the present day with Call of Duty 4, and promptly engineered one of the greatest games of all time. So will series co-developers Treyarch - currently putting the finishing touches on Call of Duty 5 - be following suit? In an interview with CVG, Treyarch's Noah Heller fails to rule that out, saying "I can't say that there won't ever be a WWII Call of Duty game again".

He continues:

If we had time we might have shown the end of the war from many different country's perspectives, and maybe that's a story still untold.

But in the meantime people definitely haven't seen the final charge of the Red Army, people haven't seen what the fighting was like in Okinawa and I think it's definitely important to show those stories from a polished perspective rather than show some of the mopping up elsewhere in the world.

Hmm. See, we've already seen the final charge of the Red Army. That's how Call of Duty 1 ended. You want our totally unsolicited advice? Ditch WW2. It's been run dry. Now WW1, with Belgium 1914, Russia 1914, Palestine 1917...that's some fertile ground for a shooter.

Call of Duty dev won't rule out more WWII [CVG]

Leaked CoD: World at War Perk List?

Posted by Owen Good at 2:00 AM on September 29, 2008

PlayStation Universe says it has dug up the perk list for Call of Duty: World at Warand it looks legit enough, but without sourcing or confirmation, we're gonna call this rumour, same as other set lists, trophies, achievements and such. If it's on the level, then for everyone who resented Juggernaut and Martyrdom, those are back, so have fun. The full list is on the jump. Call of Duty: World at War drops Nov. 11 in North America, Nov. 12 in Australia, and Nov. 14 in Europe, on the 360, Wii, PS3, PC and DS.

Hey, it's Ice-T! And if you can get through 2:40 of inane talk about "the game", you'll get to 2:41, the topic changes to Call of Duty 4, and he gets his shit talk on. He'll tell you his gamertag. He'll tell you he's a Call of Duty 4 BEAST. Take him on. On 360. Just don't hit the prestige button. Don't hit the "play" button if you're at work, either.

Activision Suing Pirates RIAA Style

Posted by Owen Good at 5:00 AM on September 22, 2008

Peter Moore at EA may think suing pirates doesn't help, but Activision offers up a tall frosty glass of "fuck that" by suing a New York man for allegedly copying and distributing its games.

Edge Online
turned up the above case. GamePolitics had been doing a little digging of its own, and Edge's scoop provoked it to go with the results of its research. They found five other instances in which the world's largest, baddest, mightiest, richest games publisher wanted its money, Stewie-style, from file sharers. Call of Duty 3 is most often mentioned as the infringed game.

Four cases have been settled for a total of $326,000, or 407,500 Xbox Live Points. One is pending, and the New York man, Mr. James R. Strickland, is looking at $30,000 to $150,000 for each infringement Activision is alleging, or may allege in an amended complaint.

The full list of those sued (and/or settled) is on the jump.
