Call of Duty: World at War Review: The Modern Warfare Effect

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare was a marvel. One of the best, I think, games of last year and certainly one of the best in the Call of Duty franchise's history. So how do you top that? Certainly not by having someone else do the next step for Call of Duty and having that step be an about face that returns you to the well-trodden mud, trenches and broken landscape of World War II, right?

Robert Bowling, Infinity Ward's community manager for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, last discussed the topic of douchebaggery with Penthouse Pets Heather Vandeven and Jamie Lynn (pictured) in June. He revisited the subject on his blog yesterday, specifically to call Noah Heller of Activison one. Or well, to rename Heller's job title to "Senior Super Douche." The multiplayer beta for Treyarch's Call of Duty: World At War is now live for Xbox 360 and PC gamers. Text doesn't matter now; head over to the official Call of Duty Headquarters web site and if you haven't already signed up for an account, do so immediately to grab your beta token. Everyone else is doing it and pounding the file mirrors right now.
Revealed on Gametrailers TV overnight -- Call of Duty: World at War will feature a "zombie mode" that's unlocked once you complete the game. It's a four-player co-op mode pitting you against endless waves of Nazi undead. Man, that sounds cool just saying it. The mode features its own economy in which things like buying weapons as well as making barricades and moving obstacles cost money. Yes, flamethrowers are involved.
15 year-old Brandon Crisp, from Barrie, Canada, ran away from home last Monday, and hasn't been seen since. Why'd he run away? Brandon's father, Steve, says "He left because we took his Xbox away". Seems Brandon was "addicted" to Call of Duty, and the decision to confiscate his "Xbox" sparked the runaway. His father now fears the worst:
Series creator Infinity Ward dragged the Call of Duty series out of the Second World War and into the present day with Call of Duty 4, and promptly engineered one of the greatest games of all time. So will series co-developers Treyarch - currently putting the finishing touches on Call of Duty 5 - be following suit? In an interview with CVG, Treyarch's Noah Heller fails to rule that out, saying "I can't say that there won't ever be a WWII Call of Duty game again".
PlayStation Universe says it has dug up the perk list for Call of Duty: World at Warand it looks legit enough, but without sourcing or confirmation, we're gonna call this rumour, same as other set lists, trophies, achievements and such. If it's on the level, then for everyone who resented Juggernaut and Martyrdom, those are back, so have fun. The full list is on the jump. Call of Duty: World at War drops Nov. 11 in North America, Nov. 12 in Australia, and Nov. 14 in Europe, on the 360, Wii, PS3, PC and DS.
