The Surprising Success of Retail Game Cards

7:30AM Maggie Greene | I had an interesting discussion this week on the topic of microtransaction models, East-West interaction, and the fact that few people pay much attention to such issues (or dismiss them out of hand); Games In Motion has a nice interview up illustrating the ‘fly under the radar’ nature of a lot of those microtransaction models. WIM sat down to chat with Rob Goldberg, CEO of GMG Entertainment — the company produces branded pre-paid cards for a couple of franchises, sold at big box stores like Target — to talk about where the market is currently and where it’s headed. Eye of Judgment Deck Building Tips

4:00AM Flynn De Marco | With the release of the second series of Eye of Judgment cards right around the corner many players are casting critical eye to their current decks. Originally a hanafuda maker, Nintendo is one of the few companies that still makes these cards. These were purchased at the 7-11 near my house and have dust on them from neglect here in Japan. Here’s hoping one pack will find a good home in Denver, and the other will likewise in Brooklyn. Click the link below to find more about Dec. 12th Funde Razor blowout. Way more. Funde Razor More »

MapleStory To Get Card Game

3:30AM Kotaku US Edition | Nexon and Wizards of the Coast have paired up to offer the US and Canada the ‘MapleStory iTrading Card Game (iTCG),’ starting this November (aren’t we so lucky?). The cards will offer players the chance to, uh, do the card battle thing, but also give access to new (and exclusive, mind you) parts of the regular game. I’m having bad flashbacks to elementary school, when Magic: The Gathering was all the rage. More »
