What Do BioShock And Batman Have In Common?

BioShock and Batman. Apart from the “B” thing, you wouldn’t think the two had a thing in common. But then, you’d only say that if you hadn’t seen a 1994 episode of the Batman animated series, called “Deep Freeze”.

More On Dead Space’s Tie-In Cartoon

Speaking with Variety about their recent deal to produce an animated film based on EA’s upcoming Dead Space, Starz Media’s Scott Greenberg has explained how they’ll be going about making a story out of a game that’s not even out yet. Step 1, they’re making it a prequel, and the game will pick up exactly from where the cartoon leaves off. Step 2? Consult the game’s creators on the rich history of their game universe:

Lord Raptor’s Most Embarrassing Moment

It seems that in the world of cartoons, our favorite video game characters sink to ungodly depths. Just ask Link, Sonic, Mario, Pac-Man or any other of the myriad other characters who have turned to TV to help extend their careers. Anyone who has ever played Darkstalkers will be familiar with Lord Raptor, the Australian rock star turned zombie fighter. Watch in horror as the cartoon universe turns him into a rapping, catch phrase spouting, olde tyme bathing suit wearing idiot. “Party hardy, dudes!” Yes, he actually says that. And aren’t those bikinis a little racy for a kid’s show?

The Worst Of Street Fighter 2

Oh, not the game. Can’t think of a bad thing to say about that. No, we’re talking the cartoon. And not the passable Japanese one, either. The abominable American one. How abominable? This abominable. Compiled by Kotakuite theswitcher, these are the worst moments of the cartoon’s two series collected for your pleasure. And by worst, we really mean best.

So, Dr. Zoidberg Was Named After Qix

Continuing their look at Futurama’s obsession with gaming culture, Wired’s Chris Baker has today shed a little light on the story behind the naming of Dr. Zoidberg. Turns out series creator David X. Cohen was a gigantic nerd when he was younger, and loved playing arcade puzzler Qix. So much so that he went and coded his own Qix clone, and called it Zoid. And he loved Zoid so much that when Futurama needed a name for its alien doctor, he and Matt Groening settled on Zoidberg. So, there you go. Wired Remembers Futurama’s Raiders of the Lost Arcade

Wired’s Game|Life posted a fond tribute to Futurama’s ubergaming episode Raiders of the Lost Arcade. Most of the piece runs through the show’s various jokes (for instance, I never knew that Q*Bert had a line that, when played backwards, translates to “Where can a guy get some pants around here?”). David Cohen, co-creator of Futurama also reveals: I wrote ‘Raiders of the Lost Arcade…The origin of that idea was a whole movie about aliens invading earth in the exact pattern of Space Invaders. I had high hopes, but the feature idea got chopped down to five minutes.

While we love the episode, we’d also enjoy travelling to a parallel universe and seeing Cohen’s original vision on screen. Hit the link for an article that will make you dust off that Futurama DVD set for another go (just make sure you have a 2-liter of Shasta and a Rush mixtape in the ready). South Park Show Guitar Hero Some Love

Parker and Stone have gone videogame MAD. For the past year or so you haven’t been able to watch a single episode of South Park without tripping head-first over some gaming joke, and this week’s episode is no exception. Especially since it’s built entirely around a single videogame: Guitar Hero. Or, Guitar Queer-O, as they’ve so subtly re-badged it. Episode synopsis is as follows: Stan and Kyle are hooked on Guitar Hero. But Stan’s superior skills on the video game damage his friendship with Kyle.

No doubt it’s all based on actual events. No doubt involving the show’s creators. I know I’ve lost a friend or three over my superior Guitar Hero skills…namely that I can play on medium and they can’t. Guitar Queer-O [South Park, thanks Drew!]
