Shit. Pub Games is Patched ... Or is It?

Posted by Owen Good at 4:00 AM on September 22, 2008

The parade of bloviation about the Fable II Pub Games exploit just will not die down. Of course, first Peter Molyneux said that cheaters would be "in for a surprise" if they tried to transfer their ill-gotten wealth to Fable II, once it releases. Then a couple sites spotted something curious in IGN's Fable II preview, in which Molyneux implied the glitch was actually a deliberate inclusion. Now Lionhead Studios has put out a patch, although someone (above) is claiming that drive maintenance will reactivate the exploit.

Blizzard Versus Glider: A Pyrrhic Victory?

Posted by Maggie Greene at 5:30 AM on July 20, 2008

Lest anyone missed this little gem among the E3 hubbub, Blizzard has scored a victory against WoW bot maker Glider. Don't remember that whole kerfluffle? Blizzard sued Glider over EULA infringement for copying code, as well as the ancillary issue of pissing WoW users up and gobbling up resources. Glider shot back with 'But grinding your way to level 70 is boooooring.' Probably unsurprisingly, this argument did not go over very well in court and Blizzard won its summary judgment motion. All's well that end's well ... or is it? Over at PlayNoEvil, there's some interesting analysis on what this judgment could mean and why it may not be all that it's cracked up to be:

Another Perk & The First Ever Fallout 3 Cheat Code?

Australian Post Posted by Logan Booker at 1:30 PM on June 30, 2008

f3_charisma.jpgRecently I posted about some perks I saw during Pete Hines' Fallout 3 demo last Monday. Going through my notes, I realised I missed one! Called Strong Back, it allows you to carry an extra 100 pounds of equipment. Again, it's an oldie from the previous games, altered to suit the mechanics of the new title.

I should mention that Bloody Mess was originally a trait. It seems it's been changed to a perk for Bethesda's instalment.

Now... about this cheat. Is it god mode? Unlimited ammo? A second Dogmeat? You'll find out after the jump.

MGS4 Weaps Without the Wet-Work

Posted by Owen Good at 6:00 AM on June 29, 2008

For all you MGS4 gamers, reader Christine L. has a couple new cheat codes for you. These look new to us, so we're passing them along. With them you can get the .45 pistol and the Mosin-Nagant sniper rifle before they unlock in the game (which happens after you meet up with the Metal Gear Mark II.) It doesn't exactly rock the foundations of science, but it might be useful to some of you.

Stuck On GTA IV? Try These Cheats, You Cheater

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 4:00 PM on May 6, 2008

GTA IV isn't the hardest game around, but hey, maybe you're not the best gamer around. Maybe you've got stubby thumbs. Maybe you can game, just can't be bothered, and want the ability to spawn sports cars in front of you just for kicks. If so, take note of the following GTA IV cheats, which will do things like restore Niko's health, give you all the game's weapons, change the weather and adjust your wanted level. ACHTUNG: these mess with your saved game files and can stop you earning achievements, so you might want to turn autosave to the "off" position if you want to safeguard your progress against a tragic corruption.

Hot Chicks In Stupid Game-Related Clips

Posted by Mike Fahey at 10:05 AM on April 15, 2008

If G4's old show Cheat - The Pringles Gamer Guide taught us anything, it was that cheat shows just don't work. The odds of someone looking for cheats and hints just happening to stumble upon a video for the exact game they are curious about before resorting to GameFaqs are just too high to even bother. They even tried replacing the host with a hot woman, and that didn't work out...but was it a scantily clad hot woman? SpikeTV combines cheat codes with attractive women in a way that slips right past sexy into a giant pile of stupid. "It takes more than one shot to take me out baby!" Don't waste your bullets.

Can Game Critics Cheat? Ethics In Reviewing

Posted by Maggie Greene at 8:30 AM on February 17, 2008

Chris Dahlen has an interesting post up on the issue of cheating in video games, in particular whether game reviewers can (or should) cheat. Of course, anyone is capable of cheating their way past a tough spot, but should reviewers be held to a higher standard? Dahlen points out that reviewers who admit to taking shortcuts or blowing past extra features or side quests tend to cause people to throw a fit; on the other hand, is galloping through a game at a blinding pace good for anyone, reviewers especially? Is there any hard and fast rule for this sort of stuff?

Secret Code Allows E4 Fine Tuning

Posted by Flynn De Marco at 12:45 PM on January 28, 2008

e4code.jpg One of the things Every Extend Extra Extreme fans enjoy in the game is the "Wiz Your Own Music" mode where you can bring your own music into the game. Beats of the game can either be automatically detected or tapped in manually and users of the manual mode have asked for a little bit of finer control over the adjustment of the beats. Q Entertainment has heard your pleas and come out with a secret cheat code that will allow you to unlock a Fine Adjustment menu.

At the start menu, use the left and right triggers to input "left, right, left, right, left, right, left, right" which will unlock the aforementioned Fine Adjustment menu. The tools were originally going to be included in the game but were abandoned when they were thought to be too complicated. But, the public asked and Q has amply provided.

Sony Respond To EQ2 Cheating Allegations

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 4:00 PM on December 21, 2007

p>quint.jpgA few days ago, some SOE devs were accused of "cheating" in Everquest 2 by moving a guild from the game's test servers to its "live" servers. Sony Online Entertainment have since responded to these allegations, with Bruce Ferguson, EQII's senior producer, saying:

[the move was made] to show kindness to some valued members of our testing community who have been working diligently to improve EverQuest II for the last three years.
How sweet! Sony also say the characters have been stripped of their superior test server equipment. Thing is, MMO site Massively have a long, long list of what they believe is evidence saying that, no, they did a lot more than move some guys, and that yes, foul deeds have indeed been committed. All very juicy, we agree, it's just a shame nobody cares about Everquest 2.

EverQuest 2 Devs Caught With Mitts In Cookie Jar

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 3:22 PM on December 18, 2007

eq2logo.jpgIt's Christmas, which means now, more than any other time, it's vital to be nice, and not naughty. Why? Nice kids get presents! Naughty kids are approached by Santa in the dead of night and beaten black and blue with a cracked, bamboo cane. Which brings us to some Everquest 2 developers, who have been very, very naughty, as they've been caught breaking game rules in order to help out their in-game friends.

There are unsubstantiated rumours the developers mucked about with the game world itself, but as we just said, those are unsubstantiated. What's not up for debate is that the guild Unhallowed Triad, using buddies within the Sony Online Entertainment team, managed to get their characters shifted from the game's test server to the live servers, bringing with them some character rules and equipment not available to other players on the live servers.

Despite internal claims the act was sanctioned by SOE, it's a clear violation of the game's Terms of Service. And Everquest 2 players know it. No doubt there will be inquisitions, witchhunts and all manner of digital torch-burning within the community. Just don't act so surprised when applying the flames. Because really, when have a bunch of humans ever got together and there not been corruption?
