Despite the first Silent Hill movie being, well, underwhelming for many, it obviously made enough money for a sequel. A sequel that will be made without original director Christophe Gans.
Christophe Gans’ Onimusha movie is in a spot of bother. It’s been put on indefinite hold thanks to, of all things, the death of Heath Ledger, which impacted on the schedule of producer Samuel Hadida, who was due to work with Ledger on a new Terry Gilliam movie. Because that’s been stopped, Hadida had to delay the filming of Onimusha, which has now thrown out the calendars of the film’s Japanese cast, who are now all too busy working on other stuff to get started on Onimusha. Series fans not put off by either the prospect of an adaptation or the fact Gans was handling it will no doubt be crushed. If, you know. Those people exist. ONIMUSHA delayed? What’s Christophe Gans up to, then? [AICN]
Video game film adaptations are generally poorly received, but the upcoming Hollywood transformation of Capcom’s Onimusha seemed to be on the right track. When the production announced the wise casting of Takeshi Kaneshiro as lead demon slayer in Christophe Gans adaptation, I wondered “When’s some clueless executive going to come around and fuck this thing up the right way?” Well, we may have an answer. The upcoming plot of Onimusha the movie has been revealed.
TEKKEN: There’s been a Tekken movie in the pipeline for yeeeeaaaaars now. Thing is, it’s gone nowhere, spending a good 3-4 years in limbo. Probably because nobody could be bothered getting it running, especially after Dead Or Alive’s stellar box office reception. Well Screen Gems don’t seem to mind, getting the ball rolling by releasing a teaser poster as well as announcing Charles Stone will direct. Stone’s pedigree? Dude directed and starred in those Budweiser “waaassuuppp” ads. Yup.
ONIMUSHA: Christophe Gans’ work on a screenplay is coming along nicely, and word is it’ll start filming next April. We know, he botched Silent Hill, but Onimusha has a lot more kicking to the face. Those movies are a lot harder to mess up. Tekken Poster and Onimusha News! [ComingSoon, thanks Maggot!]
Christophe Gans sat down for some croissants and tea with Ecran Large, mainly to discuss his upcoming Onimusha adaptation. What did he have to say? Filming starts next March and will be shot mostly in Beijing, in the same studios Hero was shot. Nearly the entire cast and crew are Chinese locals, they’re hoping to wrap filming up by next July and the things got a $US70 million budget co-financed by backers from the US, Japan, China and Gans’ bestest friend Samuel Hadida. And…that’s about it. Shame about the cast thing, if only because it greatly reduces the chances of a Jean Reno appearance. Onimusha : Tournage confirmé en mars 2008 [Ecran Large, via Dark Horizons]
