Geoff Johns Scribes The DC Universe Online

Posted by Mike Fahey at 2:40 AM on September 17, 2008

The man responsible for bringing the original Green Lantern Hal Jordan back from the dead has been tasked with bringing the entire DC Universe to life in an all new medium. DC Comics writer Geoff Johns has been tapped to pen the story behind Sony Online Entertainment's DC Universe Online, collaborating with comic artist Jim Lee on the project.

"Taking comic books into the online space presents an exciting and unique opportunity for me as a writer," said Johns. "I'm looking forward to creating a thrilling story that explains why the DC Universe has suddenly been populated with millions of new heroes and villains in a way that will engage players."

Excuse me if I gush a little bit, but the union of these two creative minds can only mean good things for the upcoming MMO. The only thing that could go wrong with a dream team like this working on the project is their work not translating well to the new medium, and that hardly ever happens. Hit the jump for some new screens from the game while I try to swallow that massive lie in the name of hope.

New Punisher Video Game Teased? Yes!

Posted by Michael McWhertor at 9:40 AM on September 16, 2008

Does Marvel have another video game based on The Punisher in the works? With the third Punisher movie (fronted by its third actor playing Frank Castle) due to hit theatres later this year, it wouldn't surprise us if Marvel had a third game based on the anti-hero vigilante. With a fun, side-scrolling beat 'em up arcade romp from Capcom and a so-so received console game from THQ under its belt, today's teaser at Marvel.com reminds us that The Punisher is no stranger to gaming.

Screw Comic Book Movies, Where Are Our Comic Book Games?

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 3:00 AM on August 28, 2008

So last week, I was taking a crap. Bear with me! And often as I do while taking said crap, I was reading, in this instance a comic. It was the latest trade paperback of DMZ, a series by Brian Wood and Riccardo Burchielli, which tells the story of a near-future US Civil War, where the red states rise up against the blue ones, and the war's frontline sees New York City split in two.

It's a great series, made great not only by the characters and storylines, but the world itself. The bullet-point summary I just gave doesn't do it justice. It's a believable world filled with real, fallible people, who are caught in the middle of a war that nobody really understands and nobody really wants to be a part of.

Anyway, the whole time I've been reading this series, and thinking of the world that Wood and Burchielli have crafted, all I can think of is: there would be a great videogame in this.

A Look At The Marvel Fighting Game That Never Was

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 1:20 PM on August 26, 2008

In January, EA shitcanned that Marvel fighting game they had in development at EA Chicago. Shame for Marvel fans, but que sera, sera and all that. Anyway, here's what it looked like! Pretty rough code, we know, but you can still get a good idea of the kind of scale they were going for: large, destructible environments, big enough to cram plenty of civilians and destructible stuff into. It's a great idea, and one another developer should notice, steal then put into a game that doesn't get, uh, cancelled.

Resident Evil And Devil May Cry Comics On The Way

Posted by Mike Fahey at 12:20 AM on July 30, 2008

As I've said before, DC's WildStorm imprint is slowly becoming THE video game comic book label of choice. They've got World of Warcraft (an excellent series btw), Gears of War, the recently announced Mirror's Edge, and now they're adding two of Capcom's hottest properties to the list. That's right, Resident Evil and Devil May Cry are the latest video game properties to get the WildStorm treatment, though the company has already delved into the Resident Evil mythos in the past.

"We're ecstatic that Resident Evil is returning to WildStorm, where we have already established deep roots into the mythos of this world," said Hank Kanalz, Vice President/General Manager for WildStorm. "We can't wait to continue, and bring a freshness and excitement to the property to match the amazing things they are doing with the game."

Details on creative teams, launch months, and storylines are still forthcoming. This needs to stop. As a recovering weekly comic book addict, combining comics and video games makes it far too easy for me to justify those weekly comic shop visits. Have mercy!

Here's Your Mortal Kombat v DC Joker

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 2:30 PM on July 29, 2008

Announced on Friday, unveiled today is the character art for the Joker, as he'll appear in the upcoming Mortal Kombat v DC fighter from Midway. As great as the most recent silver screen portrayal of the character may be, it's nice to see the team showing a little restraint and going for the "classic" joker, even if he looks a little more top-heavy than we remember.

Look, A Mirror's Edge Comic Preview

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 8:30 PM on July 28, 2008

To whip up a little fervour amongst the faithful with regards to the upcoming comic adaptation of Mirror's Edge, free preview issues were handed out during Comic-Con. They were only seven pages long, but they still give us an idea of what to expect. And what can we expect? A visual style that matches the game fairly well and a sparsity of dialogue. Which could be a blessing or a curse.Guess we'll find out soon enough! More pics below.
