Judging by the response to news that Valve was readying an official Weighted Companion Cube plush, demand for such a tchotchke is sky high. The good word from the boys and girls at Valve is that the silent star of Portal is now available in huggable polyester fibre, measuring 6″ by 6″ by 6″ (about 15 centimeters cubed for our metric friends) and can be yours for only $US 29.99.
The product frenzy doesn’t stop there, though, as Companion Cube fuzzy hanging-dice, Aperture Science mugs and Cake posters are all available in the store. Don’t forget, though, that a life-sized Weighted Companion Cube is being auctioned off on eBay, with proceeds going to Child’s Play.
Weighted Companion Cube [Valve Store - thanks, Peter!]
There’s no way you’re going to wrest that Companion Cube free from the clutches of its owner, but that doesn’t mean you can’t buy your own. Joel Johnson, besides launching and organising Funde Razor, managed to deliver unto the charity-attending masses not one, not two, but three of these giant plushies. One was given away at Joel’s Brooklyn event, one was given away at the Denver event and the third has been placed on eBay with all the proceeds going to Child’s Play.
If you missed out on the events, or weren’t lucky enough to win one, now’s your chance to buy one for charity. We’ll post the total money raised at Funde Razor (Brooklyn and Denver) once this auction wraps up.
What you see before you aren’t just the coolest damn game-related plushies on the planet. They’re not just life-sized, and very huggable Companion Cubes, no they’re also the grand prizes for the Brooklyn and Denver Funde Razor events happening on Dec. 12 to raise money for Penny Arcade’s Child’s Play Charity.
That’s right, not only can you hang-out with fellow gamers in Brooklyn and Denver and play a little Rock Band or Guitar Hero on a big-screen, but you have a chance at winning one of these Companion Cubes created by Diane Koss with the help of a grant from the Bond Street Group. Each of the two cubes, seen here sandwiching one standard-issue human female, will be awarded to one test subject in each Fünde Razor facility.
Also: We’ll be giving away some LEGO, courtesy of Lego and Net Devil, co-creators of the upcoming LEGO Universe massively multiplay online videogame. More prizes to be announced as we get closer to the event.
Joel Johnson will be on hand at the FR in Brooklyn to make sure people get the goodies and I’ll be on hand in Denver to rock out.

It seems that the game world has gone Weighted Companion Cube crazy. Who knew a little grey box with pink hearts on it could cause such a sensation. Portal fans have made Companion Cubes out of everything from cake to ice to plush. Well fear not, you will no longer have to jab your fingers with needles trying to sew your own as Valve is coming out with their own plushie version of the beloved Cube. According to this image found on Steam, the cube will come in regular form for keeping you company at your office or home and “fuzzy dice” form for you car. Now you’ll never have to be without your friend wherever you may be.
[Thanks, Tim]
We have witnessed the coming of the Weighted Companion Cube cake, as foretold by prophecy. Now the cycle is complete, as we witness the joining of cube and cake on the flesh of the one described in the ancient texts. And lo would appear a man, or possibly woman who holdeth leg hairs sacred, whose shins bear the ultimate truth of the universe. I’m pretty sure those are shins. You know what folks? The guy who said a picture is worth a thousand words had more descriptive pictures in mind. A paragraph of text along with a picture is worth like…a jillion words. Otherwise we have to speculate, and you wouldn’t like us when we speculate. Thanks for the pic, Niki!
Here at Kotaku, we’ve been inundated with Companion Cube stuff: Companion Cube flash cartoons, Companion Cube cakes, Companion Cube papercraft, Companion Cube parodies of current films, Companion Cube costumes (I don’t think we posted any of those), Companion Cube fuzzy and cute plushies … and now, those of you who are Companion Cube crazy can make your own Companion (Rubik’s) Cube! Stephen at Live Granades has complete instructions for making your own custom Rubik’s cube, with printable graphics for your very own Companion Cube. The materials list is pretty simple.
The weighted companion cube is quickly becoming one of the most popular characters in gaming. I fully expect for it to start showing up somewhere between Mario and Sonic in those greatest characters of all time lists websites like to post when they’ve got nothing better to do. Even Weebl, master of web animation and pie consumption, is not immune to the charm of the cube, creating a nifty little flash cartoon in which the cartoon Weebl tries to woo the cube with jewels and a sammich. It almost makes up for that month of my life I spent listening watching Magical Trevor over and over and over.

It’s not “weighted”. Sorry. But it is as heart-warming as the source material, will no doubt provide just as much (if not more) companionship owing to its cuddlier exterior and smaller stature and, most importantly of all, will burn up real nice. Plushie Companion Cube [4Chan, thanks Kenneth!]
