When I was in my 20s I used to wear a fair amount of video game t-shirts. Now I’m 30, I’ve decided to replace them with lumberjack shirts… for the rest of time. But if anything could tempt me back to my ‘look at me I like video games’ clothing habits, it would most likely be these new Converse sneakers.
Before Air Jordan, Converse was the top brand on the basketball court, singularly identified with Julius Erving since his ABA days. The only way I’d have a bigger shoe-gasm watching this video is if Dr J set those kicks down on a red-white-and-blue ball, and the camera raised up to reveal a New York Nets uniform.
Converse’s “The Canvas Experiment” was just that: take a 4m x 5m canvas, put 480 pairs of Chuck Taylor All Star sneakers on it then play a game of Space Invaders.
