When I think of “DARPA” and “video games”, my mind leaps to Metal Gear Solid. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), run by the US Department of Defense, has shown up for many years in our games as a shadowy source of implausible technology and machinations.

The US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, which some may recognise as a founding father of the internet, is developing antisubmarine warfare drones and has released a video game hoping to crowdsource some of the tactical AI behind them.

PS3 Driving Robot Car In Robot Car Race

Never heard of the DARPA challenge? It’s great. Real cars are given robot drivers, and they race. Winner is covered in artificial, robotic glory. This year one of the leading contenders in the challenge is Axion Racing’s Spirit, pictured above. And the gaming relevance? Why, it’s “eyes” are a PS3. Running Linux, the PS3 is responsible for “realtime stereoscopic sensor data”, reading terrain info sent from cameras attached to the car’s underbelly.
