To: Ash From: Fahey RE: Random Strangers Practicing English
With Crecente sequestered in a room somewhere and forced to play Halo 3 until his brain explodes, I’ve been pretty much left to my own devices here. Filling his shoes isn’t an easy job, let me tell you. Once the fourteenth or fifteenth groupie showed up on my doorstep asking to stroke the long, luxurious locks that I obviously do not have I started getting a bit annoyed…mainly because my digital camera was running out of batteries. It’s amazing how many people came to me for advice and decisions while he has been away. If I inadvertently ordered anyone’s death I am terribly sorry. It is my first time – naturally people are going to die.

When you go to the dentist you get the crap drilled out of your mouth and a head full of pain. When we go we get free trips to amusement parks. OK, I’m lying, this isn’t typical. Tristan’s pediatric dentist is like the best dentist on the planet. In fact she was featured on Oprah. Not only does she have an amazing rapport with kids, but once a year she throws a gi-normous party for them. This year she rented out an amusement park up in the mountains and invited all of her patients and their parents… for free. We took Tristan and had an absolute blast. Somewhere between the rides, the lunch, the tug of war and me totally pwning Tristan and my wife at 1-v-2 beach volleyball Tristan smiled and said “This is the best day ever.” Imagine that, the best day ever having something to do with a dentist.

To: Ash and Flynn From: Crecente Re: Drink Less Booze, Drop Weight
I don’t exactly have that problem. While I’ve put on a bit of gut weight, I’m still a slender 60kg and 173cm-ish. Maybe I need to start drinking more Sake.
This hasn’t just been one hell of a week, it’s been one hell of a month. Next week I fly out to the northwest to spend some time playing an eagerly anticipated game for a few days, then I return to finish prep work for Tokyo Game Show and fly out that Sunday for Japan. I think I’m about ready for September to be over and with it all of these conventions. Not that I’m not going to have fun, but I can’t wait to relax a bit.
This weekend I’m going to strive and beat BioShock and start prepping for a little World in Conflict tourney the developers are hosting. Fahey is going to be my second and it’s going to be a bloodbath.. not in our favour. Have a nice weekend guys.

I’m sure you noticed but our servers all crashed for several hours this morning. Not only could we not post, but people couldn’t read either. It sucked.
I was up till about 3 a.m. this morning playing Bioshock, my first dip into the world. I’ve been meaning to play it for a bit now but I was in Leipzig and then up to my eyeballs catching up and helping you plan a bit for the Tokyo Game Show. More »

Dude, mullet? Why would you want business in the front, when you can party all the time? That’s all I’m saying.
So HP’s new Blackbird PC landed on my doorstep this afternoon, just hours before the embargo lifted. I was supposed to have received it weeks ago to, you know, get time to actually check it out before writing about it. But that didn’t happen for some reason. And to make matters worse, the thing won’t boot up, the hard drive appears to be bad. Personally, I don’t think that’s that big a deal, from my perspective. I know what sort of wonderful things are out there in the way of cards and memory and motherboards, so none of that is going to impress me. And that’s not what sets this thing apart, it’s the 30 kilogram-plus chassis. The thing is made of solid aluminium, no plastic at all. And I was able to take the whole thing apart in minutes. It’s the best tooless PC I’ve ever seen. But it’s also a really big, really heavy paperweight right now and the box it came in is HUGE. I’m going to call up HP tomorrow to get it sent back. I just don’t have the space for it.

To: Ashcraft From: Crecente Re: Yes, I Actually Bought A PS3 Game. To Play.
I was going to fly out to Austin today to attend both the Austin Game Developers Conference and the launch party for Tabula Rasa, but something Halo-flavoured came up and I wasn’t able to make it. Michael Fahey was kind enough to step in to take my place. He is on the ground there now, I think, or should be soon. Fun town, I’m a bit jealous.

After being away from home for nearly two weeks I am finally nestled safely back in my cocoon at home. Leipzig was a blast, though I mean that purely in a work-12-hours-a-day-and-never-see-the-light-outside-of-a-hall sort of way. Don’t get me wrong, I still had fun, but I just didn’t really see much of Germany besides the train rides between hotel and convention centre. I suspect TGS will be very much the same. It’s too bad, because I do enjoy checking out other countries. More »
To: Ash From: Crecente Re: What’s The Longest You’ve Spent In Setting Up An Interview?
Like I said in the comments, I believe I spent nearly a year trying to set up, and eventually managing to set up, an interview with Diane Zamora’s family when I was working a the Startlegram. Funny thing, the interview never made it into the paper for lots of reasons, but ultimately it was my decision.
So today Tristan came home from school with a warning from his first grade teacher. Apparently he was caught “flirting with girls” in his classroom and passing notes to them. Wow! I’m not sure whether to punish him or congratulate him.

To: Ash From: Crecente Re: “America Is Not Nice”
What a strange coincidence. I was watching an HBO special about Hiroshima last night. I think you should tell your son that no country is nice. It’s a truism.
I spent a chunk of today working on scheduling Leipzig stuff. Sure the Games Convention is next week, and we’re leaving in just a handful of days to cover it, but a lot of companies are just getting around to scheduling events. I can’t even confirm that Mike and Mark have credentials to get in, so we might be covering the event from the outside… at a nearby Beer Garden…
It does sound like there will be a reasonable amount of news coming out of the event, a surprising amount actually when you look at how news-free last year’s Games Convention was. Can’t wait. The best part of covering Games Convention? I can actually catch a direct flight from Denver to Berlin. Sa-weet!

To: Ash From: Crecente Re: Grave Cleaning/Kotaku Facebook Group Joining
Fahey was kind enough to sit watch over Kotaku for a chunk of the day so I could take a brief respite in Breckenridge. Some friends of ours invited us up to their cabin for a long weekend. Monday morning we dropped Tristan off at a camp and then Trish, a friend of hers and I biked from Breckenridge to Copper Mountain. Half way through the 50km round trip we stopped for a lunch and my brain, always out to get my stomach, forced me to order steak and mash potatoes. You’d think, after all of these years, I would have learned to ignore that little voice in my head that says “order the steak” but I haven’t. Fortunately, the return trip started off with a long downhill and a steady rain, so it wasn’t that bad. It was a great ride, though road biking at 3,000m can really wear you out. Good thing I’ll be back down at a measly 1,800m come tonight.
