I’ve made fun of NPR more than my fair share, but Heather Chaplin recently did an interesting piece regarding the “games that got away.” About 7 minutes of radio gives credit to three incredible games we’ve seen this year: Portal, Everyday Shooter, and Desktop Tower Defense.
It’s worth listening to just to hear Jonathan Mak call Everyday Shooter a “celebration of geometric sexuality.” And, of course, I don’t know that any Kotaku readers have overlooked any of these three games—but in case you have, yeah, it’s time to check them out. I just wish that the radio piece said a little less about GLaDOS, since her evolution of character is one of the most fascinating and surprising (yet gloriously inevitable) elements of Portal. Still, hopefully well-written stories like this on NPR help these games sink into the mainstream consciousness as much as they have our own.
Michael Pachter doesn’t only gaze into crystal balls. Guy talks a lot of shit! Seems he’s hooked on flash game Tower Defence, and is not just wasting his days trying to hit the top of the game’s leaderboard, he’s slapping velvet gloves in the face of both MTV’s Stephen Totilo and Newsweek’s N’Gai Croal. Mulitplayer: Now have you proselytised this game out to other people? Are you continuing to sow the seeds here?
Pachter: I haven’t yet because I want to get a score on there that no one will ever top. Before I invite somebody foolishly like you and N’Gai provoked me into beating your scores. I don’t want to do that until I’m certain I have a score that my friends can’t beat. .. I’m N’Gai’s worst nightmare. He’s ruing the day he invited me to that leaderboard.

Anyone who’s been reading this blog for the past year and has the ability to retain Kotaku editor trivia may know that I was consumed by free Flash game Desktop Tower Defense for some time. So, when Dylan Cuthbert of Q-Games reveals that PixelJunk Monsters is a PlayStation 3 game in the same vein, I’m forced to add funds to my Wallet in anticipation.
