Sure, you could play Doom 3 in its boring, by-the-numbers first-person mode, but why would you want to when there's a mod to transform it into an isometric 3D shooter stuffed full of chunky excitement?

The mod Z-Hunter comes close to accomplishing this feat. While you can't play the original game with an isometric view, Z-Hunter does offer "8 maps, 2 unique weapons, unique player animations [and] over 20 enemies custom designed for this style of play", according to the description on the website. Slap in a custom soundtrack and you've got quite a package. There's even a short back story to help get you in the mood. It mentions pussies and maggots, but it's not what you think.

No co-op or deathmatch functionality from what I can see, but that doesn't stop it from being infinitely awesome.

Lego Star Wars, Lego Indiana Jones, Lego Batman, you can see why they're made. Those kind of properties make money. Bubba Ho-Tep, on the other hand...the marketing possibilities are somewhat limited. Which doesn't bother mod-maker trepaning from putting together Bubba Lego-Tep, a mod that doesn't only take the Elvis v Mummy masterpiece and make a Lego game out of it, it's done via the Doom 3 engine. So strange. And by strange, I mean strangely fascinating.

The guys over at TweakGuides.com have posted a spiffy optimisation guide for Splash Damage's Enemy Territory: Quake Wars. Based on id Software's Doom 3 engine, there are probably a lot of tweaks you could carry across from the claustrophobic 2004 shooter. But, as far as the specifics are concerned, this guide is about as comprehensive as it gets.

So, if you're currently enjoying the beta, or maybe trying to enjoy it but the frame rate stinks like the intestinal wind from a curry-loving monkey, then you might want to give this guide a look-see.
