Airplane star Peter Graves may be dead, but our fascination with movies and games about gladiators lives on in this week’s edition of The Nintendo Download.

Ghostfire Games’ Rage of the Gladiator might not have started out to a tribute to Peter Graves, but I’m making it such. It’s now a first-person gladiatorial combat game that will forever remind us that Turkish prisons are a fun place to hang out.

The Code Monkeys’ Triple Shot Sports for WiiWare includes archery, which I am going to say is something gladiators really enjoyed.

The Virtual Console scores Castlevania: Rondo of Blood, which has nothing to do with Peter Graves. Thanks, Konami. We didn’t expect anything from DSiWare, but you… wait. Graves – Castlevania has tons of graves. Tribute complete!

Rest in peace, Mr Graves.

It might not be Final Fantasy XIII, but Final Fantasy II, or Final Fantasy IV in Japan, makes up for the lack of newness with sheer quality. Lightning, Snow, and Hope have nothing on Cecil, Rydia and Edward, though the latter might be a bit too spoony for some tastes.

For more fantasy, check out Max & the Magic Marker, Press Play’s WiiWare game about a boy drawing his way through his imagination, or Elemental Masters, a fantasy-based trading card game for DSiWare from lbxgames.

If horror is more to your liking, Chillingo’s Dracula: Undead Awakening appears on WiiWare and DSiWare this week, with early teen horror fans getting another dose of Too Ghoul for School in EA’s Flips: The Bubonic Builders for the DSi.

ESRB Rating: E (Everyone) – Comic Mischief

Price: 1000 Wii Points

Description: One day Max gets a mysterious marker in the mail. Not knowing better, the first thing he draws is a wacky, purple monster. As soon as the marker leaves the paper, the monster comes to life and jumps off the paper and into another drawing. With the monster on the loose and messing with Max’s drawings, Max has no choice but to go after it. Armed with the magic marker, you must help Max track the monster through 15 inventive and challenging levels. You’ll need more than good will and quick reflexes to tackle the challenges ahead. Draw freely inside the game to help Max defeat enemies, overcome obstacles and solve puzzles. As you draw stairs, seesaws, balloons, surfboards and whatever else you can think of, your creations will interact with the physical environment, making every session unique.

As if Cave Story wasn’t enough, Nintendo has plenty more downloadable games coming out in the first half of 2010, from Art Style and WarioWare for WiiWare to a DSiWare fighter that puts you inside the game.

If you’ve been keeping up with the flood of Nintendo news this morning, you’ll know that Cave Story hits WiiWare on March 22, but the WiiWare party starts on March 1, when Capcom’s Mega Man 10 makes the scene. Then on the 8th, Max & the Magic Marker arrives, charging players to use their Wii remote as a drawing tool, helping Max reach his ultimate goal, whatever that might be. Maybe he really wants to play Cave Story. Rounding out March we have WarioWare: D.I.Y. Showcase, a standalone WarioWare title featuring interoperability with WarioWare D.I.Y. on the Nintendo DS.

Two new WiiWare Art Style titles also make the lineup for early 2010. Rotozoa features a tiny creature that absorbs tiny coloured organisms through its tentacles to grow larger, and Art Style: light trax features a techno-music backed race between coloured light beams, which sounds a great deal like Bit Generation’s dotstream, which is fine by us.

This spring will also see the release of Ghostfire Game’s Rage of the Gladiator and a port of gorgeous PC puzzle platformer And Yet It Moves from Broken rules. Then, in a few months, we’ll be treated to Super Meat Boy!, which needs no introduction.

DSiWare explodes this year with the spring release of Nintendo’s Photo Dojo, a fighting game in which you take photos of yourself, record sounds, and then become a character in a side-scrolling beat-em up. Sounds like an interesting use for that DSi camera we’ve been poking at for months.

Spring also brings Nintendo’s Metal Torrent to DSiWare, a multiplayer shooter involving converting your opponent’s bullets to cubes to increase your score, and X-Scape, also from Nintendo, which is an exploratory adventure involving exploring more than 20 planets, navigating 3D tunnels, and fighting giant robots.

It looks like Nintendo has a fine lineup coming, at least for the first half of the year. Things are beginning to look up for the weekly Nintendo Download.

Fans of the weekly downloadable Xbox Live Arcade offering will have more than just guitar controller based platforming to enjoy starting Wednesday, as puzzle platforming and online multiplayer strategy gaming combine for 2800 Microsoft Points-worth of new games.

Sure, Fret Nice isn’t so new, as PlayStation 3 owners will have been enjoying Tecmo and Pieces Interactive’s Fret Nice for the better part of three weeks when the game hits XBLA. For 1200 Microsoft Points, you’ll have to decide whether the unique art style and guitar controller support mechanic is worth it.

Joining Fret Nice in its downloadableness are two additional options, the hex-based resource gathering strategy game Greed Corp from W! Games. It’s only 800 points and is said to be digestible in 20-minute gameplay sessions and feature a snazzy terrain-based gameplay tactic.

Final, there’s Lazy Raiders. For 800 Microsoft Points, players can enjoy platforming and treasure hunting in either portly archaeologist form or that of your Xbox Live Avatar. The other trick? You’ll control the world and rely on its gravity rather than more traditional jumping and running.

Who’s gettin’ what?

Our new gallery format for The Nintendo Download highlights the fact that, other than big releases like Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney: Justice for All, DSiWare and WiiWare titles aren’t getting nearly as much exposure as they should.

Just look at the lineup we have here. DSiWare Spotto! from Nintendo? Nothing to see here. I had to grab a WiiWare screen for Virtual Toys’ Spaceball: Revolution, and title images for EA’s Scrabble Classic and Gameloft’s Real Soccer 2010.

I’m just saying that some of these titles might sell more than a handful of copies if someone would tell us what they are before we read the official descriptions, which can be found alongside the pictures in the gallery below.

So why are you looking at a screen shot of Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune? Well, according to word from IGN, that multiplayer booster pack – $US5.99 for the whole shebang, if you’re already wondering – is all based on content from the original Uncharted. Both maps are inspired by levels from the first game, with throwback skins for Drake, Elena, Atoq Navarro and more ready to freshen up your multiplayer game.

The Trophies and medals are all multiplayer driven, unlike the original game’s set of purely single-player driven achievements. IGN has additional details on what those are and how to get ‘em.

Publisher Electronic Arts is a big, big fan of downloadable content. So much so that it’s committing to featuring paid DLC and online play in every single title it releases during the company’s fiscal 2011.

EA COO John Schappert said during the company’s Q3 financial earnings call Monday that “every one of EA’s releases will have an online component – both downloadable content and online play”. That goes for Dead Space 2, the two Need For Speed titles and Crysis 2, as well as Fighting Title and Action Title. Everything.

Looking at the publisher’s FY 2011 line-up and its ability to sell all manner of post release content, that’s not going to be a difficult fit for EA.

Don’t be shocked if much of that digital distribution happens on EA’s terms, on par with the Cerberus Network integrated into the recently released Mass Effect 2. Gotta keep those used copies off the shelf!
