My favourite piece of gaming hardware released around the turn of the millennium was not the Sega Dreamcast, or the PlayStation 2, or the Xbox, or the GameCube. It’s not even the awesome Panasonic Q.
The Xbox is 10 years old this week. For those who have enjoyed playing games on either the original console or its successor the Xbox 360, it’s a time for heartfelt congratulations.
It’s been out of production for years but garage coders and hardcore fans of the Dreamcast have been keeping it alive with fresh content and inventive hacks. The latest example of the former comes from German studio NG:DEV.TEAM in the form of Gunlord. The side-scrolling shooter appears to show the influence of the old-school Commodore 64 classic Turrican and Nintendo’s Metroid franchise.
For fans of all things SEGA, Steam’s running killer deals on Alpha Protocol ($US3), Aliens vs. Predator ($US9.99) and the Total War series. The Dreamcast bundle is just $US7.49.
There’s something weirdly nostalgic about these two videos, which are a compilation of every boot screen for every console ever to have one, going back to the Sega Master System (the Mark III in Japan) of 1985.
