Perruchon didn’t own a PS3 until the cheaper and slimmer model hit and had been spending the last few years playing his Xbox 360. The PS3 reminded him how much he liked the DualShock design, which inspired this table.

No word on whether this will actually go into production, Perruchon’s DualShock table uses controllers to buttress glass surfaces. The design is for the black DualShock and the white one. Another concept image below.

Strange the pads are announced but not the silver console itself, but then, SCEA works in mysterious ways. For example, what’s the deal with those White DualShock 3s?

A guy by the name of Craig Thorner, an engineer who held a few patents related to rumble tech, was a witness in the case, who helped Sony in their attempts to ” invalidate Immersion’s patents”.

Now, two years later, Thorner is suing Sony.

He claims that, shortly after the original Sony/Immersion suit was filed, a company by the name of Performance Designed Products LLC got in touch with him, claiming that, like Sony, they’d been targeted by Immersion’s lawyers. PDP asked for his help.

In the process of providing that help, Thorner says he licensed some of his own patents to PDP, and in doing so enlisted the help of some lawyers. The same lawyers who, it turns out, were in the process of handling Sony’s case against Immersion. Those lawyers, Thorner alleges, “encouraged him to accept terms that were less than favorable”.

Those terms included a big reduction in the amount of royalty fees he was asking for, along with a provision that would allow not just PDP – but, importantly, Sony as well – to licence his patents.

Thorner is now accusing Sony and PDP of working together, scheming to acquire his patents on the cheap, and is suing the pair of them for legal malpractice, as well as suing Sony for patent infringement.

Sony/Immersion: The Plot Thickens [Patent Arcade]

Reader Henry says he just picked one up at his local Wal-Mart. You can see the pic right here. It’s a DualShock 3, it’s white, he bought it in the continental United States, and it cost him a pinch over $US50.

And no, as you can see from the packaging, that’s not a Japanese box. Could a Western release for the white PS3 be far behind?

A listing has appeared on GameStop’s website for a silver DualShock 3 controller for the PlayStation 3. Which is odd, since there are no silver PlayStation 3 consoles available in the United States.

Maybe Sony Computer Entertainment America are thinking of releasing the silver PS3 – currently only available in Asia – in the US. Maybe they just feel like tarting up the currently drab lineup of DS3 pads. Either way, GameStop say the pads will be out towards the end of June, and they’re going for the standard price of US$55.

Shame it’s the silver pad and not the classier white one.

PS3 DualShock 3 Wireless Controller Silver [GameStop, thanks everyone who sent this in]

Katamari Damacy and Noby Noby Boy creator Keita Takahashi gave Game Developers Conference attendees a chance to learn “All About Noby Noby Boy” today, including that the game was originally developed on the Xbox 360.

Takahashi showed off an early prototype of the title, way before it was bound for release via the PlayStation Network. While crude, it showed off many of Noby Noby Boy’s gameplay mechanics. But there was a problem, forcing the game to change platforms.

Takahashi says that, because the Xbox 360 was selling so slowly in Japan at the time, you might think that it was a political decision. But the switch from the Xbox 360 to PS3 was due to one thing: the horizontal layout of the PlayStation 3’s DualShock/Sixaxis.

The Xbox 360 controller’s diagonal analogue stick layout was simply no good.

Besides, Takahashi says that one of his hopes for Noby Noby Boy was that it wouldn’t sell very well. More on that later.

We’ve a soft spot for Resistance 2 and Japan. Why? Because the game’s marketing there was vastly superior, and also because it’s led Sony Japan to come up with adorable little bundles like this.

To be released on March 12 for ¥8980 (USD$95), the little box will include a copy of Resistance 2 along with a DualShock 3. While the box pictured has a white controller, Sony say the pack will also come in black and silver as well.

We’d recommend the white one, as we do in all DualShock 3-related matters. Its matte finish just feels better.
