It Took A Team Of Physicists All This Time To Figure Out How DVDs Work

1:33PM January 11, 2011 | Annalee Newitz

Though DVDs have been consumer-grade tech for years, it wasn’t until yesterday that scientists announced they were certain why they worked. Now we know that burning a DVD is really more like freezing it. More »

Disgaea Anime Coming May 14

Flag
12:30PM March 14, 2008 | Logan Booker

I was casually flicking through Madman’s latest DVD catalogue when I noticed the company will have the Disgaea anime available from May 14 via its online store. Yes, May is a while away, but a heads-up now is better than none at all. That’s what I’ve been told anyway.

The three-disc set will demand $49.95 from your wallet/purse/trust fund, and includes the English trailer, Japanese and music promos and “special talks”, which I’m assuming are interviews of some description. For the purists, there are Japanese and English dubs as well as English subtitles.

We’ll be sure to put together a giveaway closer to the release date, so keep an eye (or even two) out for that.

The Making Of Cave Story (In Pictures)

7:30PM November 9, 2007 | Luke Plunkett

Cave Story fans, this could be as close to a DVD “making of” special you’ll probably get. Pixel, Cave Story’s creator, has released a whole ton of early screens and concept art for the game. Background art, character design, enemy ideas, early level design, the works. Some are interesting, others informative, some even adorable. Check out some if below, the rest is at the link underneath. Good stuff all round.

Press Start The Movie

1:00AM September 27, 2007 | Mike Fahey

In a world much like our own. . .except with magic and aliens and way more ninjas. . .war is beginning. Thus begins Press Start, a movie celebration of old school video games created by Ed Glaser of Dark Maze Studios. The natural evolution of countless YouTube gaming parodies, it’s the story of a young man with spiky blond hair recruited by a ninja and a secretly female space warrior named Sam to help save the world from Count Nefarious Vile – so evil he killed Tetris. It sounds hokey, and in a way it is. Made on a budget that could buy half a shoestring, the production values are terrible, but taken as a fan-made film the whole thing is just an amazing accomplishment. It even features cameos from Carlos and Daniel Pesina of Mortal Kombat fame. More »

3:00PM September 15, 2007 | Brian Ashcraft

What better way to capitalise on a hit product? Rip it off! Ladies and gents, may I introduce the “Wee”. It’s not a game machine, but a DVD player that was discovered in at a Tokyo retailer. Hey, it may not play games, but the Wii won’t play DVDs, so all is good!

Dead Or Alive Flick To Pollute DVD Players Any Day Now

8:40AM September 5, 2007 | Michael McWhertor

Checking my Netflix new releases RSS feed last night revealed a shockingly horrific fact: the Weinstein Company is planning to make good on its threat to release the fighting game movie adaptation DOA: Dead or Alive on DVD this month. If you were sick the weekend DOA: Dead or Alive was in North American theatres and are a masochist, you’ll be able to get your hands on it (possibly) next week, from September 11th. Ouch. Too soon, Weinstein Company, too soon.

Netflix lists the DVD as already released, but the majority of online retailers are showing a 9/11 ship date. Please let us know if you find it “in the wild.” More »

South Park Season 10 DVD Set Includes World of Warcraft Trial

10:40AM August 9, 2007 | Michael McWhertor

The sloppy wet Blizzard-South Park smooches will continue as Comedy Central has announced that the DVD set collecting the tenth season of South Park will contain a 14-day trial for World of Warcraft. The crudely animated comedy prominently featured the Blizzard MMO in its tenth season in the episode titled “Make Love, Not Warcraft” an effort recently nominated for an Emmy.

The DVD collection goes on sale August 21 for a manufacturer suggested price of $US49.99, but can be had for far less at the right retailers. No word on when Blizzard will finally seal that deal with God himself to imprint trial versions of WoW on our DNA. Keep reading for extremely rare press release. More »
