You’ve Got Ninja Gaiden In My Dynasty Warriors

Hey, Tecmo and Koei merged. And now their games are merging. Hooray!

Ninja Gaiden character Ryu Hayabusa will be appearing in Koei’s PS3 version of Sangoku Musou Multi-Raid as an unlockable costumed character in armour, while Warrior Orochi’s Nu Wa on the Xbox 360 version of Multi Raid. And costumes of Multi-Raid characters Sun Shang Xiang and Zhao Yun are going to pop up on the Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2.

We look forward to seeing Dynasty Warrior character relaxing on the beach with the girls from Dead or Alive Xtreme. Make it happen, Koei Tecmo!

Koei Makes Subsidiary In Vietnam

Best known for the hack-and-slash Dynasty Warriors, Koei is setting up a Koei branch in Hanoi, Vietnam.

According to Koei, the sudden jump in development costs has lead the company to look for ways to be profitable. Enter, this Vietnamese studio with aims to optimise efficiency and productivity for Koei — all at lower costs.

The reason for picking Vietnam is that the country not only has the infrastructure but also a familiarity with Japanese pop culture.

Koei Credit Card Hacks And Slashes Into Wallets

Koei, makers of Dynasty Warriors, has released, you guessed it, a Dynasty Warriors-style credit card in Japan.

There are other game-themed plastic, but not necessarily ones that make you want to swing them around and slay baddies.

Koei Tecmo Working On Corporate Cross Over Game

Japanese game makers Koei and Tecmo have merged, officially forming Koei Tecmo Holdings as of this April. But does that mean their games will merge as well?

According to the summer issue of industry publication Nikkei Corporate Information: “Tecmo and Koei are combining titles to launch a new game. The aim is to bring in fans of both.”

There is no information about possible titles or a release window.

While Tecmo’s most popular franchises are action game Ninja Gaiden and fighter Dead or Alive, Koei is best known for its hack-and-slash Dynasty Warriors series.

Koei does have experience with cross-branding: Back in 2007, it developed Dynasty Warriors: Gundam, which featured the Namco Bandai’s popular mecha. Dynasty Warriors: Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball, anyone?

Red Cliff, the latest from Hong Kong action director John Woo (Hard Boiled, The Killer), is coming to DVD in Japan this March. What’s that got to do with gaming?

Buy either Red Cliff Part I Standard Edition or Red Cliff Part I Collector’s Edition and get a bundled Shin Sangoku Musou: Multi-Raid (Dynasty Warriors: Strikeforce) flier that includes a password players can use to unlock in-game armour for their characters.

Both Red Cliff and Dynasty Warriors are based on Ancient China’s Three Kingdoms period.

Dynasty Warriors PSP Getting Carnival Colour PSP Bundle

New PSP carnival colour “Radiant Red” is getting bundled with Shin Sangoku Musou MULTI RAID, the PSP version of Koei’s popular Dynasty Warriors franchise.

The pack will consist of the game, a MULTI RAID pouch on the Radiant Red pouch. The colour was selected as “image colour” for this bundle because it best captures the spirit of hack-and-slash Shin Sangoku Musou.

On sale March 3 in Japan.

The Art Of War Vs. Dynasty Warriors

One of the Chris-es over at Hardcasual passes along this little bit of brilliance, which compares the teachings of Sun Tzu’s The Art of War to the teachings of Koei’s Dynasty Warriors.

So how does the Chinese history-delving hack and slash action series hold up in the face of Sun Tzu’s immensely influential book of military strategy? There are several parallels, and several not-so-parallels.

“Regard your soldiers as your children, and they will follow you into the deepest valleys. Look on them as your own beloved sons, and they will stand by you even unto death!”
Regard your soldiers as competition. On rare occasions, they will steal kills from you.

YouTuber shizuhohattori is recorder girl. She specializes in playing retro game tunes on her recorder. For that, and that alone, we adore her. Above, she tackles the IKARUGA theme for the first level, “Ideal.” Think about that: This person liked IKARUGA enough to do a version on a recorder. So cool.

Koei Wants More Western Gamer Love

Koei is thinking about you Western gaming people! For a while now, the Dynasty Warriors has been trying look outside Japan and morph into a more international company. Admirable! Koei exec Naoki Katashima hopes to make that happen. He’s just been promoted to VP of Koei UK, Koei France and Koei North America — all very different markets. Says Katashima:

This new mid-term plan is a very significant development for Koei… The plan demonstrates our renewed commitment to our western businesses and the importance with which Koei views the markets outside of Japan. This plan establishes an entirely new division that unifies all of Koei’s western territories, and represents a substantial part of the company overall… Now more than ever, Koei’s development studios, and sales and marketing teams around the world are working more closely together to develop remarkable entertainment experiences for video gamers across the globe.

It’s always nice to see companies try to grow. Hopefully, this new plan will consist of less Dynasty Warriors and more other stuff.
