Sony Updates PlayStation 3 Firmware, A ‘Critical Step’ In Bringing PlayStation Network Back Online

Sony’s PlayStation Network is still down—this is day 25—but there’s a sliver of good news for PlayStation 3 owners today. Sony has released new firmware for the PS3 (version 3.61) that lets users update their PlayStation Network passwords.

The Last Major PS3 Firmware Update This Year Is….

PS3 firmware 3.0, apparently. That’s what PlayStation Network operations director Eric Lempel said, and he should know. He is the PlayStation Network operations director.

Sony Enhancing PSN Trophy Bragging Online

PlayStation 3 owners with a thirst for Trophy collecting are likely familiar with the above. It’s the old way of seeing your PS3 e-accomplishments online, something Sony is planning to update with enhanced PlayStation Network Trophies feature on PlayStation.com.

Don’t Expect PS3 Games On Demand Any Time Soon

Microsoft are 100% behind the idea of allowing users to download full, retail copies of Xbox 360 games. But the PS3? Hmmm.

Sony Love The XMB Just The Way It Is

While Microsoft have seen fit to completely overhaul their console’s front end, Sony say that they’ll be nothing of the sort with the PS3. At least, not anytime soon.

PSN Staying Free, Kids

The more people buy PS3s, the more people sign up to the the PSN. The more people sign up to the PSN, the more it costs Sony to keep the thing running. So will there come a time when Sony start charging you for the use of the PSN? Maybe! You can never rule that kinda thing out. But if they are, they’re not doing it soon, with PSN boss (and man of the moment) Eric Lempel saying:

We’re happy with what we’re doing right now and we’re going to stick with it. I think being free is always an advantage. The fact that it’s free is nice for consumers who want to try out the online experience, those who may be new to it and may not be ready to commit to spending dollars, and that’s a really good message for us.

Course, Eric then says that leaves you with money free for game subscriptions (and he doesn’t mention Qore), but his basic point remains valid! Free stuff is nice.

Sony Talk A Little Trash Over Microsoft’s XBLA De-Listing

PlayStation Network boss Eric Lempel knows what he wants in an online service. He also knows what his competitors offer, and in some cases, what he does not want. Take the Xbox Live Arcade, for example, and Microsoft’s recent decision to start de-listing the more unrecognised/shitty games from the service.

While naturally we only want to keep quality titles on the network we do have room for a lot of them. I think if I look over at the competitors’ UI they may have some issues just displaying content, and scrolling up and down lists isn’t the easiest way to find things.

No, it certainly is not. And Microsoft may well be reading these words and sobbing gently into their morning coffees. Then again, they may be doing something about it.

Sony Hear You, Say They’re Workin’ Hard On In-Game XMB Support

Every time a new round of PS3 firmware shows up, more fingers are crossed for in-game XMB support than anything else. So every time a new round of PS3 firmware shows up and it’s not included, folks get sad. Cheer up, kids! Sony know you want it, and they’re working on it, PSN boss Eric Lempel telling Shacknews: We are looking at a number of enhancements related to accessing some of the XMB features during gameplay, including messaging your friends. While there’s no timeline to announce at this point, we’ve heard loud and clear from consumers that in-game XMB access is one of the most requested PS3 enhancements.

There, now doesn’t that make you feel better?
