If you’re an environmentally conscious Pokémon fan on the rag, or know someone who is, have I got the gift for you.

That, dear readers, is a blue flannel custom made Pokémon-themed menstruation pad. Don’t worry, Pikachu won’t end up like Sissy Spacek in Carrie, he’s on the other side of the battle. I think.

I think. Hell, I’m less qualified to talk about menstruation than I am about Warcraft. I haven’t had a serious girlfriend in four years, and she preferred tampons. Handmade, washable menstrual pads seem to be a green alternative to buying up Stayfree and chucking them in the landfill. But Pokémon?

You know those shaped soaps at your mother’s house that no one is allowed to actually use? Here’s our version, courtesy of Etsy seller Digitalsoaps.

Digitalsoaps offers our favourite video game weapons, lovingly recreated in the form of scented soap products. Take the green Xbox 360 controller above. Scented with Mountain Dew, it’s the most extreme gaming soap ever created by the hands of man. The store also produces NES controllers, PlayStation controllers, Wii remotes, and a rather lovely Super Nintendo model, all present in the gallery below.

I love the contrast between the real item and the recreation. Game controllers are probably some of the dirtiest things in any gamer’s household, and soap generally isn’t found. Kidding! I am of course referring to the contrast between ultimate dirty and the embodiment of cleanliness that is soap or something like that.

The only problems I have with soap shaped like game controllers is that I could never bring myself to use them to clean myself, and if I got drunk enough I would totally try to eat them. To address that second concern there’s the Digitalchocolates store.

Metanet Ponders Animation, Sells Merchandise

Metanet, developers of XBLA’s N+, are hard at work on their next title, Robotology, and have been openly discussing their development hurdles at their blog, a refreshing level of transparency on the process. Central to their difficulties right now seems to be moving past sprites to animation in the 2D setting:

We don’t have animation properly “sussed” yet, otherwise we’d be able to better explain what the various aspects of the problem are.. all we can say for sure is that once you eschew sprites, it gets tricky ;) Of course, this is the whole point — if you want to avoid the limitations of a sprite-based system, you’re necessarily going to have to deal with all of the problems that using sprites lets you avoid.

In the same post, though, the Metanet guys reveal they’ve set up an expansive Etsy shop of N+-themed merchandise. Merchandise! If you like cuffs, there are all kinds featuring scenes from the game, and some good-looking ninja shirts too.

I’m generally pretty good about restraining from DS accessories purchases, but these classic Nintendo cases from an Etsy seller are a little piece of fantastic. Constructed of hand-sewn felt, the pieces are far from polished, mass-produced products, but that’s precisely what makes them so charming in the first place. Pick one up for $US 13 or both for $US 21. In continuing with my fast food metric of the day, that’s anywhere from 3-5 value meals.
