New Final Fantasy Game Playable On Both Wii AND DS? Huh?

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 1:20 PM on October 2, 2008

Before we go any further, know that the full details on this are a little scarce, and we imagine we'll only get the whole story at TGS next week (or during the Nintendo presser in a few hours). But the latest issue of Famitsu says that upcoming Square Enix RPG Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time will be playable on both the Wii and DS. Same game, available on both systems. Meaning that the Wii version is - yes - essentially a port of a DS game. There's some other stuff about being able to play cross-platform (which is presumably the whole point of this), ala Crystal Chronicles, but again, we'll hold off on getting too excited until we get the full details from Square Enix next week.

Peter Molyneux Is All About The PS3 Digs

Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 5:00 PM on September 24, 2008

Two birds, one stone! Peter Molyneux chats up how he was impressed by Final Fantasy VII and how he's not so impressed (so far) with the PLAYSTATION 3. According the Microsoft employee:

I always remember back to Final Fantasy VII, when I first played FFVII, that to me defined the genre... Those were the 'oh my god' moments, I don't believe they exist. I haven't seen many of those on the PS3.

But have you seen many of those on the Xbox 360, Peter? He adds: "This is very much me as a gamer talking, not as an industry spokesman. I've got a PS3, a Wii and a 360, I've got just about everything." Just like when Molyneux said that the PS3 was waiting for its "defining title".

'Final' Doesn't Mean Last, Yo

Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 3:00 PM on September 4, 2008

There isn't a "Final" Final Fantasy. Square Enix keeps going, churning those FF games out — endlessly! The first Final Fantasy was apparently named so because of Square Soft's financial troubles. The game was a smash hit, and Square Soft (and later, Square Enix) continued to make Final Fantasy games with no end in sight. What gives? Square Enix producer Shinji Hashimoto says:

Final Fantasy XIII Demo Will Last More than Two Hours

Posted by Owen Good at 1:00 AM on August 18, 2008

PlayStation Universe reports that Famitsu magazine reports that the PS3-exclusive Final Fantasy XIII demo will clock in at more than two hours, which is longer than the CGI movie bundled with it, Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Complete. The bundle releases March 2009.

The demo will be on a separate disc (ah ha! Blu-Ray has its limitations too ya know!!!!) The demo will be based on the opening to the game, naturally. Wouldn't be smart to spoilerize everything. Two other tidbits, I'll fess up and say I have no clue what these mean so I'll just quote verbatim: "One of the female characters, refered to as 'Pigtails Girl', has been through some tough times". And "Mr. 33CM's real name is based off of weather as well".

Final Fantasy XI Boss Takes At Least 18 Hours To Beat?

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 8:30 PM on August 13, 2008

There's one boss that stands above all others in Final Fantasy XI. Pandemonium Warden. Never seen it myself (never even played FFXI myself), but I'm assured he's a tough cookie. So tough, in fact, that when the guild BeyondTheLimitation tried to take him on the other day, they ran into some problems. Namely, that it was taking hours to defeat just a single form of a monster that had already changed form 20 times. In the end, the guild had to call it quits, because after 18 hours of combat members of the party started throwing up and passing out from exhaustion. 18 hours? We get it Square, tough bosses are tough, but 18+ hours of combat isn't fun. It doesn't sit well with the game's own warning message, either.

Loads Of New Square Enix Screens (FF, Kingdom Hearts)

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 5:30 PM on August 6, 2008

Following Square Enix's private bash held over the weekend in Tokyo, GameSpot Japan were handed some new screenshots for all of the games featured during the festivities. Some aren't strictly "new", since we've seen them before as scans or at smaller resolutions, but you may as well see them as nature intended. Others, like those for Parasite Eve "sequel" 3rd Birthday, are new. That's Final Fantasy XIII above, with the rest at the link below.

'No Plans for Future DLC' For Final Fantasy My Life As A King

Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 9:00 PM on August 5, 2008

Square Enix really seems to have delivered a quality experience with WiiWare title Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King. In April, DLC for the city-building game was first released. DLC items were priced from 100 to 800 Wii Points and included buildings, new dungeons and ways to customise their avatar. Game site 1Up asked the game's director, Kenichiro Yuji, if there were plans for more downloadable content. He replied:

All DLC has been available since May 30. That's everything for now, and we have no plans for future DLC at the moment.

Wonder why that is...

Final Fantasy XIII Comes To Men's Formal Wear

Posted by Michael McWhertor at 10:00 AM on August 5, 2008

While the surprise announcements that did come out of the Square Enix DKΣ3713 Private Party were definitely post-worthy, Final Fantasy Agito XIII coming to the PSP is a big deal doesn't hold a candle to oddball product cross-collaborations. The biggest news to come out of the weekend event was that Square Enix and Roen would be releasing Final Fantasy Versus XIII formal wear, real world items worn by in-game characters — perfect for the prom!

It looks like the collaboration works both ways, as this is more than just cheap cosplay stuff. Roen looks to have worked with Square Enix on character designs for Versus XIII.

Before you excitedly whip out the credit card, be warned that Roen is obscenely expensive. Sure, their tank tops are just dazzling, but even we balk at $US 240 price tags.
