‘Muslim Massacre’ Creator Tucks Tail, Apologizes

4:30AM September 15, 2008 | Maggie Greene

We, along with a lot of other people, took a look at the rather offensive Muslim Massacre. Kotakuite tokeytorey let us know that after getting a lot of press, attention, and wrath directed at him, creator Eric “Sigvatr” Vaughn had tucked tail and posted an ‘I’m sorry’ and obligatory ‘In retrospect’ statement on the Muslim Massacre website. I take a sort of dim view of statements that verge on ‘but you just didn’t UNDERSTAND what I was trying to say’ chest beating (apologise and move on, dude), but both statements are after the jump:

‘Muslim Massacre’ Surprisingly Found Offensive

6:40AM September 11, 2008 | Michael McWhertor

The top-down shooter Muslim Massacre instructs players to “Take control of the American hero and wipe out the Muslim race with an arsenal of the world’s most destructive weapons!” And that’s pretty much it. Kicking off with a George W. Bush voice sample (“Let’s roll!”), the player lays waste to scores of Muslims in a bloody 2D landscape, on city streets and soccer fields, with Robotron (or, if you prefer, Smash TV) inspired gameplay.

You kill hundreds of faceless men and women, some with suicide bomb vests, some unarmed, as you work your way up to “bosses” like Osama bin Laden and, ultimately, Allah. It’s packed with tasteless stereotypes and unapologetic detached violence.

It’s unwaveringly offensive by design — it’s given the tagline “the game of modern religious genocide” — so it should come as no surprise that people are voicing their displeasure with the game. According to UK publication Telegraph, British Muslim organisations are up in arms over the shooter.

Freebie Adventuring With Ben There, Dan That

8:20AM August 14, 2008 | Kotaku US Edition

Indie developer Zombie Cow (they did the spoof deathmatch platformer Gibbage)- have released another ‘tribute’ game — this time a Windows Point ‘n’ Click adventure heavily inspired by classic Lucasarts SCUMM games like Monkey Island, Sam & Max Hit The Road and Day Of The Tentacle.

Ben There, Dan That follows the adventures of programmer Dan Marshall and his reanimated zombie flatmate, Ben. What starts out as a simple hunt for a TV aerial to facilitate viewing of Magnum: PI turns into a multidimensional quest for a missing Yin-Yang.

If you don’t mind some fairly primitive graphics, enjoy in-jokes about retro gaming and think you can stomach what Zombie Cow themselves describe as “the odd dabble of mild racism” (Eh? Careful with the irony guns, guys, that stuff can get everywhere) then BTDT is available for the low, low price of free – although Zombie Cow would certainly not object if you wanted to chuck a donation their way.

2007′s Best Freeware Games Chosen By The Authority

11:00AM January 1, 2008 | Michael McWhertor

The world’s best gaming deals can’t beat “free!”, so for those without a gift card in hand this post-holiday season, you may want to take a gander at The Independent Gaming Source’s best freeware games of 2007. The number of titles, across an amazingly broad 30 categories, point out the year’s best shooters, platformers and RPGs that can be had without anything more than some disposable bandwidth. Topping the list is a game that I only recently discovered myself while searching for Gradius pics, a Warning Forever-style top down boss fight-only shooter named Fraxy. The Japanese freeware game lets players create their own levels (bosses) with an intuitive editor. Other titles you may already be familiar with, including Knytt Stories, Guxt, Sam and Max: Abe Lincoln Must Die and the now free Command and Conquer.

Warmonger Rains Destruction In October

7:00AM September 19, 2007 | Mike Fahey

Crecente got a chance to play Warmonger, Operation: Downtown Destruction back in June at NetDevil’s anniversary party, and they pretty much had to pry him away from the computer. PC gamers will soon get a chance to see if they experience similar ass-stickiness as NetDevil announces plans to release the game via digital download on October 16th for the low, low price of completely free. I’ve yet to see any mention of PC requirements, but from what Brian wrote back in June the AGEIA PhysX card will not be one of them, with an option to turn off the effects for PC’s without. This is good, because my AGEIA card from BFG arrived dead, and I’ve yet to take them up on that lifetime replacement warranty. I’m not good with shipping things, apparently. In honour of the impeding release, NetDevil has produced a veritable art gallery of destruction. Enjoy!

Gazing Into Dream of Mirror Online

3:30AM September 19, 2007 | Mike Fahey

Dream of Mirror Online is a free to play MMO from Chinese developer Softstar, and one of the most highly acclaimed MMOs in Asia. It features a nifty cell-shaded anime look, with four races, six classes, and six professions to progress through as you play. As you can tell from the gallery below, it sure looks shiny and happy, plus one of the races is kitty-people, so you know I’m in. The English version of the game just entered the closed beta phase last week, and if you register over at Gametribe.com you might get a chance to get into the beta later yourself.

If you were a fan of Command & Conquer: Renegade – the series first, and only, foray into the FPS genre – then Red Alert: A Path Beyond will really have you sweating profusely in excitement. It’s a freeware game that takes the Renegade concept and replaces the modern C&C setting with the World War II one from RA.

There’s a beta client and server available for download now at the official website, so grab a few buddies and man those teslas.
