The Death Of Print: January 2009 Edition
6:30PM Luke Plunkett | No question that print media is dying. Only question is how long it’ll hold out. In the interests of keeping tabs on things, then, let’s take a look at Future Publishing’s latest British circulation numbers. More »

The Ghost of Gaming Future
7:30AM Maggie Greene | The topic for this month’s Blogs of the Roundtable has led to some fantastically diverse answers: “What role will gaming play in your familial relationships in 5 years? 10 years? 20 years?”. More »Four Future Trends of Entertainment
6:30AM Maggie Greene | Jane Pinckard of game girl advance has come up with four future trends of entertainment, and they all apply to gaming — while her ideas aren’t necessarily ‘new,’ she does really boil down some of the tensions and innovations facing the industry right now. She points to four trends — tension between immersion and transparency, asynchronous instant communication, credible advertising with integrity, and tools as the content. This last issue is one that’s come up a lot, and I really like her take on it — the move from passive consumer to active user: More »

Europe’s Version Of Qore: The Details
6:30PM Luke Plunkett | Like we told you last month, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe are putting together their own version of Qore. Presumably because European PlayStation owners haven’t suffered enough. The program will be called Official PlayStation Magazine HD, will of course be a premium (ie you pay for it) service, and will be distributed weekly over the various European PlayStation stores. A job listing for the program says that the show will feature “hi-def video, game demos and other content”, so basically, expect Qore, but with a much longer name. Content Producer – Official PlayStation Magazine HD – Bath [Future, thanks Matt!] More »

3:00PM Logan Booker | If you needed any more evidence that Future, the publisher of T3, Official Xbox 360 Magazine and Official Windows Vista Magazine is planning its expansion into Australia, then look no further than job site Seek.com.
Tipster Nick spotted this Associate Publisher position in “Inner Sydney” and was kind enough to pass it on.
Recently, Derwent Howard had its licensing agreement for Future’s magazines revoked, and it looked fairly certain that the UK publisher would dive into our congested market with its leading titles in tow.
This pretty much seals the deal. More »

12:30PM Logan Booker | Yes, it’s official folks. Derwent Howard released a statement yesterday that includes the gory details. Sadly, I’m not privy to the statement itself, but IT media news site ITJourno has extracted everything we need to know. Again, I’d provide a direct link, but the site is only accessible to registered IT journalists.
According to ITJ, the split is effective immediately, which means there’s just one more issue of Official Xbox 360 Magazine in the pipeline from the publisher. After that, it’s unclear how the magazine will transition back to its original owners or whether it’s appearance on shelves will continue uninterrupted. On the bright side, I’ve heard that Derwent Howard will retain OXM’s staff for a new Xbox 360-themed magazine.
Keeping with the industry gossip (dominated recently by the comedic antics of the phantom of the Internet), Derwent Howard’s new Nintendo games mag hit newsstands yesterday. Look out for a Lego Indiana Jones on the cover. IGN Australia also has a new Editor-in-Chief, in the form of ex-Official Playstation Magazine editor Narayan Pattison, after Bennett Ring’s recent departure to the world of mobiles. More »

4:00PM Logan Booker | Media Connect’s ITJourno, an industry news site for Australian IT journalists, is reporting that publisher Derwent Howard may have lost its right to publish titles licensed from the UK-based Future Publishing.
For Oz gamers, the most prominent title in Future’s repertoire is Official Xbox 360 Magazine. Painting with broader strokes, this news would also affect T3 and Official Windows Vista Magazine.
The article goes on to say that Derwent Howard will likely make a statement today regarding the future of its brands. There’s also mention that Future may enter the Australia market.
I’d like to link to the story, but it’s only available to journalists registered to the ITJourno site. Even though ITJourno is a credible source and there’s no doubt in my mind about its validity, until this news makes its way to more accessible channels I’m going to mark it as a rumour.
Update: Smarthouse News has confirmation of the split. More »
