So the organisers of the Leipzig Games Convention want to set up a show in North America. Popular vote says it’s in the US, our vote was for sunny, sunny Mexico. Looks like we might both be wrong. Speaking with Gamekyo, the GC organisers have said they’re leaning towards Canada as the destination for the show. Yes, Canada! This is far from confirmed, mind you, but the proximity of most major Canadian cities to the US and the country’s big development scene certainly can’t hurt its chances.
Not the whole city, mind you. Doubt it’d clear customs. No, just the games convention, which after a reasonably successful 2008 showing in Germany want to continue recent expansion plans (there’s an Asian Games Convention run by the same team) with a North American event. GC CEO Wolfgang Marzin:
The concept is flexible and the network of the global games industry permits us to be active at different locations. After the Southeast Asian Games Convention, we are now focusing on the North American market.
North America? We can only hope he means a 2009 Mexican Games Convention, because really, we could do with the extra sunshine.
Sony’s PSP title LocoRoco is back with a cleverly named sequel: LocoRoco 2. And it’s brought annoyingly catchy music with it! If you watch this trailer at least twice, you’ll have that tune stuck in your head all day. Once, even.
Leipzig’s Games Convention will be Gears of War 2-less. While the game got top Microsoft billing at E3, Gears of War 2 won’t be at GC. Explains Epic’s Mark Rein:
Microsoft doesn’t show Gears 2 at Leipzig because they don’t sell the game in Germany.
Gears of War 2 won’t be sold in Germany due to the country’s restrictions on game violence. Bummer.
I’ve kinda grown fond of Leipzig. Sure there’s not a whole bunch to do there and having the opportunity to check out Berlin, Munich or Frankfurt every night after spending the day covering the Games Convention would be Zuuupear Koole, but there’s something to be said for a town dwarfed by the show it hosts.
Games Industry reports that the only way the Games Convention could leave Leipzig is if they convention hall hosting it said it was OK. That’s because the Leipziger Messe actually owns the Games Convention name and brand. And I can’t imagine they’ll ever let that bad boy get away.
Next year? I think we’ll be staying in Leipzig proper instead of “quaint” Halle.
GC likely to remain in Leipzig [Games Industry]
