Gun 'Enthusiast' Makes Real Gears Lancer That Can Really Kill You

Posted by Michael McWhertor at 7:40 AM on December 2, 2008

The Gears of War Lancer replica is certainly cool to pose with and the Nerf version is definitely... cute. But neither packs the actual killing power of the real-life version with working chainsaw attachment.

Replica Gears Lancers Broken, Here's How You Fix 'Em

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 1:40 PM on November 13, 2008

Having problems making your new replica Gears of War Lancer Assault Rifle go "pew pew pew"? You're not alone. Turns out there are a ton of people whose guns are kinda busted, thanks to a manufacturing error whereby every single gun had its battery connectors wired for Asian batteries, not US or European ones. Never knew there was any difference, but hey, there you go. Seems this meant that when you pulled the trigger, your batteries weren't doing anything, and your gun, it wasn't doing anything either. Makers NECA have come up with a workaround for the problem ("a small thin metal plate, with instruction sheet"), click through for details on how to get your hands on one (as well as the full statement).

Gears of Phwoar? Yes, The Daily Star Went There

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 8:30 PM on November 12, 2008

According to Britain's Daily Star, page 3 T&A specialist Lucy Pinder (pictured) is a 360 fangirl. And runs a "league" for other page 3 girls, all of whom play "shoot-em-up" (their quotations, not ours) games. How on earth are The Daily Star (and not, uh, us?)privy to this kind of information? And who are they to assume she's talking about Gears of War 2 when she and her pals could be dedicated Raiden and Ikaruga players? They have "sources". "Sources" who tell them things like:

- Watch out next time you go online with your Xbox for a battle - you could be fighting Lucy. She takes NO prisoners and she takes it seriously.

Let's Talk Gears of War 2 Romance

Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 5:00 PM on November 11, 2008

Gears of War was all testosterone. Gears of War 2 is mostly testosterone with bonus estrogen. The sequel brings an element of romance between character Dom and his wife Maria, who's gone missing during the Locust horde onslaught. According to the game's designer Cliff Bleszinski:

Gears (The Movie) Sticking Close To Gears (The Game)

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 2:30 PM on October 30, 2008

When Hollywood adapts a property for the big screen - be it a book, comic or game - they can often take a few...liberties with the source material. Take the Mario Bros. movie, for example. The upcoming Gears of War movie, however, will be doing no such thing, with the film's screenwriter Chris Morgan telling MTV that the film will be sticking to the men and events of the game pretty closely.

Dude Huge Wants Clive Owen Type

Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 11:00 PM on October 24, 2008

...For the Gears of War movie. Instead of the obvious muscle-bound "wrestler type" for character Marcus Phenix, Gears of War designer Dude Huge prefers muscle-bound thespian. "You know...like a Clive Owen type; somebody who can actually act and is incredibly charismatic," says Huge. "And they can put him on a workout plan for six months so he can build the muscle mass he needs." If that doesn't work, Hollywood can inject him with needles to make him grow muscles!

Epic Games To Be Bought By The Guys Making The Gears Movie?

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 1:20 PM on October 24, 2008

According to Variety, film studio Legendary Pictures are in talks to buy Gears of War creators Epic Games. Serious talks. The pair have been working together for over a year now on the upcoming Gears of War film adaptation, meaning at least one of them is impressed with what they've seen so far. Movie studios buying their way into the games business is of course nothing new, but buying a studio on the scale of Epic - which besides its work on Gears of War and Unreal Tournament also dominates the business with their Unreal Engine - certainly is.

Gears Of War 2 'Last Day' Ad Sets The Mood

Posted by Michael McWhertor at 8:00 AM on October 24, 2008

For a game so loaded with testosterone, it's refreshing to see Microsoft and Epic Games showing us the softer side of the Gears of War gang. The new ad spot for Gears of War 2 is a moody follow-up to the "Mad World" ad that coincided with the release of the original Gears. Dubbed "Last Day," the spot highlights the "last precious moments that Marcus Fenix and other members of the intrepid Delta Squad spend above ground as they prepare for the most important battle of their lives."

The minute long spot features the tune "How It Ends" by DeVotchKa and was created within the Unreal Engine 3 with the help of ad agency T.A.G SF, special effects house Digital Domain and director Joseph Kosinski. Yep, that's the same team responsible for "Mad World." See the ad after the jump or during the listings provided after this, but make sure the heartstrings get a good stretch ahead of time.

Would You Drive Six Hours for a Game?

Posted by Owen Good at 8:30 AM on October 20, 2008

Chad Lakkis, writing over at Ripten, did. For Gears of War -- so, not some highly anticipated sequel, but an altogether new IP. But that's how rock-solid certain he was that Gears would rule his life. And when Gamestop did its usual not-honoring-reservations garbage, Chad refused to take no for an answer.

I got on the horn and started calling every GameStop that I could find until I found one that was willing to help me out. That was the good news. The bad news was that it was about three hours away in Connecticut. So I gathered up some food and drink, hopped into my car, drove from Massachusetts to Connecticut, purchased the game, shared my story with a few Gears fans in-store, exchanged gamertags, got back in my car, and drove back ...

Here's the punchline. When he got home, he didn't even play through the intro tutorial. He set it down and didn't play it for five days afterward. Only when he got into multiplayer was his sense of disappointment washed away.

The anecdote part of a retrospective on the original game. Gears of War 2 drops for Xbox 360 on Nov. 7. If you're getting it, I hope you don't have to drive six hours for it.

I'm a sucker for ugly game-themed shoes, but even I wouldn't pick these bad boys up. Featuring a blood-red COG symbol, these custom Globe skate shoes sell for $US80.
