GSC Gameworld: ‘S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Was To Be The Ultimate Game’

I know when I first heard about STALKER back in, geez, 2002, I was excited. A first person shooter mixed with survival horror and the world’s worst man-made disaster? I couldn’t have put a better idea for a game together given the collective powers of Ken Levine, Chris Metzen and Kim Swift. Even when the game appeared a shadow of its former self at E3 2006, I took heart in what was left. When I finally did play it, I enjoyed myself – even if my expectations had to be tempered. But it’s the fun that counts, right?

Seems GSC Gameworld was originally just as bubbly about the game’s prospects. In a chat with Eurogamer, PR manager Oleg Yavorsky mentions the developer wanted to create a title that had “a mix of pretty much everything – shooter, RPG, survival horror, driving”. I think you had a good stab at it Oleg. Let’s see how Clear Sky turns out.

4:20AM March 28, 2008 | Mike Fahey

GSC Game World loves S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky so much that they want to share it with the entire world, all at once. The follow up to last year’s hit S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl will be hitting store shelves all over the damn place on August 29th.

“Our intention to deliver the game simultaneously worldwide is both a challenge and big responsibility to the many fans of the game around the globe. We are looking forward to achieve this ambitious goal in August.” – said Sergiy Grygorovych, GSC World Publishing CEO.

8:40AM January 25, 2008 | Michael McWhertor

Fans of GSC Game World’s S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl who haven’t yet had their fill of shooting radioactive mutants will be pleased to have installed Steam today, as the prequel has been announced as exclusive to the digital distribution platform. S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky will still be coming to retail shelves early this year, but it won’t be available online outside of Steam, a nice get for the boys and girls at Valve. For a look at the first-person shooter’s ability to render grass and all things abandoned, check out a baker’s dozen screen shots in the gallery below. Official word on the game is after the jump.

Recommend Your Favourite STALKER Mods

I’ve been looking to get back into STALKER, now that the game has several patches under its belt and the performance of the Direct3D 9 engine is up-to-scratch. Not that I’m so concerned about this last part any more, having recently upgraded my gaming machine with a Intel Q6600 and GeForce 8800 GT.

Beastly.

I’d like to put together a short-list of recommended mods that everyone should play with, whether they alter weapons, quests, NPCs or even entire sections of the game. Personally, I’d like to focus on those that improve the game by adding more depth, fix bugs and flesh out incomplete features, rather than add a man portable missile launcher that fires near-critical, poorly designed RBMK reactors in every direction. No cheats, basically.

So, readers, I implore you to post your favourite STALKER mods. I’ll install them, give them a play through, and do a write-up on what I think is the best combination. If you’ve already done something similar to this, I encourage you to post your thoughts. More »

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Devs Get 360 Certified

12:40AM November 27, 2007 | Mike Fahey

Russia-based GSC Game World, the developer most likely to be confused for a video game expo, have announced that they have received official certification as an Xbox 360 developer. GSC is probably best known as the developer of the Cossacks RTS series as well as hit PC FPS S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl and its upcoming prequel, Clear Sky. “We are happy to say the big efforts of our company aimed to obtain the official Xbox 360 developer status now ended with success. Obtaining such a status for an independent developer based in ex-USSR means a lot – it took us over 2 years to get. We are very thankful to Microsoft for the assistance and high esteem of our team’s professionalism.

Congratulations GSC! Now bring the Xbox 360 a little S.T.A.L.K.E.R. loving, or maybe release a game for it that isn’t such a pain in the arse to type. More »
