Iconic Gun Controller Now… A Free App

As far as game peripherals go, Namco’s GunCon is legendary. It’s a great, great light gun controller. It would be a shame if Namco somehow cheapened that controller’s good name by making an iOS app.

BRIEF

Super Cheap Time Crisis 4 Alert! Want a second GunCon 3 for Time Crisis 4 multiplayer fun? If you balked at the $US 89.99 US asking price for Namco’s latest gun shooter, maybe $US 49.99 is a bit easier to swallow. It’s Amazon.com’s current Lightning Deal and it’s going fast. Proof that people still like shooting at things, regardless of nauseating the character design. Thanks to our tipsters for the heads up!

Time Crisis 4 Supports Multiplayer, But You Can’t Buy Seperate Guncons

Namco Bandai’s upcoming lightgun extravaganza Time Crisis 4 supports 2-player, splitscreen play. Yay! Oh, wait…belay that yay. Rather than let you enjoy some good times with your friends, Namco Bandai would instead like to hold a knife to your throat. See, instead of allowing consumers to purchase a second, individual Guncon – for multiplayer, as a replacement, whatever – they’ve decided the only way you can get additional guns is to…buy additional copies of Time Crisis 4. At $US 60 a pop. Way to screw over your loyal fanbase, Namco Bandai. Real smart.

Say Hello to My Little Guncon

This one’s self-explanitory: A viral Scarface parody for the Time Crisis 4‘s Guncon 3, complete with a Tony Montana-style suit and bad Cuban accent.

Guncon 3 Is “Much More Accurate” Than Wii-mote

Namco’s first party peripherials for its Time Crisis series are typically fantastic. The new Guncon 3 looks to be no exception. It’s apparently very accurate. How accurate? Way more accurate than the Wii-mote. Time Crisis 4 producer Teruaki Minami explains:

…Guncon 3′s LED markers are actually much more accurate. Much better than Nintendo Wii’s controller. In the Wii, there are only two LED points, but for the Guncon 3 there are six LED points, so it is more accurate than the Wii. The PlayStation 3 will be able to recognise the tilt of the Guncon 3, its distance from the monitor, and these things cannot be done with the Wii system.

What’s more, the Guncon 3 also has SIXAXIS capabilities as well. It’s also bright orange so some idiot doesn’t use it to hold up a gas station.

Designing A Guncon

What do you know. One day we wonder why we haven’t heard much about Time Crisis 4, the very next day we get a nice post on the PlayStation blog about how the Guncon 3 was designed. If the team behind it are to be believed (and really, we don’t know enough about console gun peripherals to argue otherwise), it’s not as easy as it looks. Lots of things to take into account, like weight, and vertical aiming, and how bright you’re going to make your bright orange prototype. This is only the first part of what must be a whole series looking at the Guncon 3′s creation. Gun fans, you’re on notice, stay tuned. Time Crisis 4: Creating the Guncon 3 [PlayStation.Blog]

Guns On Time Crisis 4 and Guncon 3

In a sentence, if you like the Time Crisis series, you will like Time Crisis 4, since it doesn’t deviate wildly from the tried-and-true. This is a bit disappointing in the graphics department, considering it marks the series’ PS3 debut—they’re nicer, for sure, but not wholly updated. The biggest (and best) change comes from the GunCon 3 in its dual-fisted goodness, which felt quite natural and quite nice, actually, and improved our gun-waving endurance.
