New iPod Touch Better Than iPhone for Games

Concept PSP2 designs from emerging Australian designer

12:52PM Seamus Byrne | Tai Chiem, an emerging Australian designer has given the concept treatment to the PSP, working up some ideas on an advanced PSP2. I’m a sucker for concept designs so how could we not share his ideas with y’all? My design is set for the future using emerging technology. Featuring flexible OLED display that can be conveniently rolled out. An electric charge hardens the material. I’ve come up with an alternate method for the action buttons. Instead of pressing a button, you instead use the joystick. So instead of pressing, X O, etc, you push either up down, left, or right. So would you like this as a PSP2? Or is there something not quite right? I’m sure Tai would be up for some feedback, so show us your own design theories in the comments. I can see a flaw in the joystick button system for games where you need combo presses, but I’m sure we’d all be happy enough to see the UMD go bye-bye. More pics after the jump, or check out Tai’s work here. More »

Rebellion: PSP Still ‘Kicking Arse’

10:00AM Leigh Alexander | Chris Kingsley is CTO of Rebellion, who’s done so many PSP titles he’s got good reason to wax optimistic about the platform’s future prospects. But wax he does, as part of a GamesIndustry interview in which he says that even though PSP has been “in the shadow” of the DS, the girl’s still got life in her: “But there’s still very good business to be done on the less glamorous platforms – look at PlayStation 2, it’s still selling bucket-loads of consoles and bucket-loads of games, though they’ve got to be the right games for the right platform”. He noted that the PSP is “kicking the arse of pretty much every other system out there” in Japan because the right games have come out – with a bit of luck, he thinks that some of those games will come out in Europe and be just as successful. Seems to me, though, that as the most technically sophisticated handheld on the market, it’s no compliment at all for the PSP if one of its mainstay UK developers is comparing it to a last-gen console. PSP has a good few years left in it still, says Kingsley [GamesIndustry.biz] More »

This Portable NES Is Legit, Works

6:00PM Luke Plunkett | It’s not “legit” in that its licensed by Nintendo or anything, but since most of Nintendo’s patents relating to the NES lapsed between 2003-2005, it is guaranteed to be lawsuit-free. This is the FC Mobile, a handheld gaming system selling for $US40 which plays real NES carts. Like, the ones you have in that dusty box under your old bed at your parent’s house. No modding, no dodgy imports (console excepted), no hassle. Oh, except it runs on AA batteries. Guess that’s a slight hassle.
