Late last week, Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima revealed a new Zone of the Enders project. Fans of the sci-fi series have been waiting for Kojima to start work on a new Z.O.E. The thing is, he won’t be doing much much work on it.
When Hideo Kojima started out in the games industry, he met a lot of people like himself, would-be creators like him who had set other life goals for themselves. The famed game designer wanted to make movies but never found a path to that aspiration and he worked with many others who got into games unexpectedly. A great two-part interview at The Guardian talks about how people reacted to the Metal Gear creator’s decision to go into games as a career and who Kojima’s unlikely peers were:

Hideo Kojima turns 50 this year — an age where most people begin to plan their retirement. But retiring to a life of golf and orthopaedic jogging shoes is the last thing on the Metal Gear Solid creator’s mind. He recently pledged that he “will make games until the day I die.”
These aren’t just glossy white 3DS units. They are, for Metal Gear fans, two of the coolest pieces of merchandise they will ever lay their eyes upon. Those sketches were drawn directly onto the handhelds by long-time series artist Yoji Shinkawa. The signature on the right? It’s the John Hancock of series creator and boss Hideo Kojima.
Hideo Kojima is working on a new game codenamed “Project Ogre”. Today, he confirmed on Twitter that the game deals with an ogre (Kojima wrote “oni” — demon or ogre — in Japanese). Yep.
