Dexter the Game follows the general premise of the Dexter television show. You play Dexter Morgan, the serial killer who only kills those who deserve it. You guide Dexter as he gathers information about his prey, stalks them, and eventually kills them in his usual fashion. The game is presented as a 3D adventure, with graphics that really give the previous generation of iPhones a workout.

“We are thrilled to give iPhone and iPod Touch owners a way to experience DEXTER in a fresh, engaging way,” said Len Fogge, Executive Vice President, Creative, Marketing, Research and Digital Media at Showtime Networks. “The minute you begin controlling him and hearing his innermost thoughts, you are completely engrossed.”

Dexter the Game is now available for $7.99 in the iTunes App Store. As a bonus, anyone who purchases the game gets a code to enter them in a sweepstakes that could score them a walk-on role in season five of the show. Happy hunting!

Ubisoft showed off Assassin’s Creed II: Discovery today at Apple’s “It’s Only Rock and Roll” event. The game is a 2D platformer that looks relatively nice, and will include the ability to take iPhone pictures of your face and have them appear on wanted posters scattered throughout the game, which seems like the sort of value-added feature that I can quickly forget exists.

EA’s exclusive rights to create video games utilising the NFL licence doesn’t extend to mobile games. This is how Gameloft has continuously released NFL titles for normal mobile phones over the past few years, and how they can get away with releasing titles for the iPhone, which despite its increasingly powerful game capabilities, still counts as a mobile device. Back when EA made the exclusivity agreement, mobile gaming was only beginning to grow in popularity, and as recently as a year ago, press releases like the one Gameloft released announcing NFL 2009 went largely unnoticed.

Either way, NFL 2010 is due out by the end of this month for the iPhone and iPod Touch, with a price to be determined. It features full NFL rosters, touch screen controls, and could very well be the go-to game for NFL fans still flustered over the EA deal.

Luc Bernard bounces back from the release of Eternity’s Child with Mecho Wars, an Advance Wars-esque strategy game now available for the iPhone and iPod Touch.

Remember back when we reported that Mecho Wars was due out in March? We were a little off. It’s available on the iTunes App Store now for $US4.99 though, and that’s what matters. Mecho Wars is a colorful take on Advance Wars, which tells the story of the war between the Winged Crusade and the Landians that eventually led to the events in the Steam-released Eternity’s Child.

I’ve played it a bit now, and it’s a nifty little game that borrows extremely heavily from Advance Wars, with a few interesting twists, like the waterways that freeze over at night, causing careful strategies to go to the dogs as everybody starts walking on water. They’ve even included single-device head-to-head play, for those of you who don’t mind passing their iPhone to a friend.

Not sure how good a judge I am of this sort of game play, but so far the game has a four and a half star average rating in the App Store, and all of those people can’t be wrong. It’s kicking my arse, but perhaps your arse is more resilient and supple than my own.

Leading iPhone game publisher Ngmoco has no plans to release exclusive games for the newly announced iPhone 3GS, instead offering a more creative way to take advantage of the new model’s increased graphical power.

MTV Multiplayer, the website that used to be Totilo’s playground, spoke to Ngmoco co-founder Neil Young on the subject of the new, more powerful, more expensive iPhone that Apple announced on Monday. He explained that the company that brought us Rolando and Star Defense plans to continue releasing games that play across the entire iPhone family, rather than branching off to 3GS specific titles.

That doesn’t mean the company won’t be taking advantage of the new device’s increased abilities. The solution, which the company is implementing in the upcoming iPhone first-person shooter, LiveFire, tears a page out of the PC game development handbook.

“We’re scaling the imagery based on the performance of the device, so if you’ve got a 3GS, the game’s going to look better and run at a great frame rate. And if you’re on an iPhone 3G, the game will look a little bit different, but the frame rate will be the same, ’cause obviously performance and speed are actually an important part of a cool first person shooter gameplay experience.”

A perfect solution to delivering a similar game play experience across platforms with different technical specifications. They are sharp, those Ngmoco folks.

The free Risk knock-off for the iPhone and iTouch has you playing as the blue army in a bid to conquer the world.

The four other players are all computer controller, but do a fairly good job of keeping things interesting. To play you just tap on countries to move your armies about or invade other bordering countries.

The game is fairly simple, so simple that over time it can get a bit repetitive, but it’s free. Also, according to developer Sillysoft Games, there appears to be a paid version, Lux Touch Dlx, in the works. Let’s just hope it offers up online play, pass-the-device play and some amped up graphics.

Oh, for the love of god, include a save feature next time around. If my bid to conquer the planet is defeated by a PR call one more time I’m going to kill someone.

With the success of Trism to ride, Demeter recently quit his job at a bank and is devoting all of his time to developing games for the iPhone. Next up, Demeter and his staff of five, are working on five games, with two coming out by Christmas. One of the new titles is called Trismology and will be a spin-off on Trism. Any bets on whether it will be a role-playing blend of the puzzler, ala Puzzle Quest?
