Welcome to Objection! This is where we take the time to go on-depth on current gaming issues, and let you guys continue the discussion in the comments section. This time, in the wake of our extensive feature on the Australian Christian Lobby, we decided to ask ourselves a question – do we, as gamers, pay too much attention to the ACL? Is this a healthy course of action? To discuss we brought in Jeremy ‘Junglist’ Ray, a Christian gamer, and the current host of the 5 Inch Floppy.
In the R18+ debate the Australian Christian Lobby has been the one major constant – always in opposition, always in the media, seemingly involved at the highest levels of Australian government. Considering their increasingly conservative message – in the wake of Jim Wallace’s controversial views voiced on twitter – we decided to take an in-depth look at the ACL themselves. Why do they exist? Why are they still relevant? And why should we care?
We wrote up a full report on Game Jam a couple of weeks back, but in the midst of all the game making chaos we spotted Jeremy ‘Junglist’ Ray, with camera man in tow. We locked eyes. Approached one another, then engaged in an impromptu handshake arm wrestling contest. (Disclaimer: I would have totally win if this fictional event had actually occurred). Anyway – Junglist has created a pretty impressive video documenting his experience at Game Jam and we totally recommend giving it a look.
Junglist was the guest Editor over at Kotaku for a good couple of months, he’s also a practising Christian. And a Christian that doesn’t take too kindly to the ACL claiming to represent him and his beliefs in the public sphere. In this blog post over at The Punch, Junglist goes through his reasons for supporting an R18+ rating, but also skewers the kind of backward, fear-mongering tactics employed by the ACL.
