Late last week, Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima revealed a new Zone of the Enders project. Fans of the sci-fi series have been waiting for Kojima to start work on a new Z.O.E. The thing is, he won’t be doing much much work on it.
When Hideo Kojima started out in the games industry, he met a lot of people like himself, would-be creators like him who had set other life goals for themselves. The famed game designer wanted to make movies but never found a path to that aspiration and he worked with many others who got into games unexpectedly. A great two-part interview at The Guardian talks about how people reacted to the Metal Gear creator’s decision to go into games as a career and who Kojima’s unlikely peers were:
Technically a video game title screen is not news, but considering the fact all we’ve seen of Metal Gear Rising in the last couple of months is a set of mostly terrible live action trailers, it’s good to be reminded that a video game actually exists, and it looks quite swish.
There’s a simple rule publishers need to adhere to when it comes to live action marketing: either do it right, or don’t do it at all. Skimp on the quality, even just a little, and what you end up with will probably be a bit shit.
Konami released a rather polished trailer for the previously announced PS Vita version of Metal Gear Solid: HD Edition that walks through the Vita specific features.
I just… don’t know what I’m watching. I’ve watched this new Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance trailer three times already and I still have no idea what’s going on. It’s like that weird video from Lost. Or pretty much anything from the Metal Gear Solid series.
Unlike the Konami of the day, which relies almost entirely on milking a couple of key franchises and selling mobile games in Japan, the Konami of the 1980s was a more exciting company. You could say, in fact, they were jammin.
