The collector’s edition will come in a tin case and include the game, a 48-page hardcover “Art of Mass Effect 2″ book, Issue 1 of the Mass Effect Redemption comic book, and a bonus DVD with behind-the-scenes and making-of videos.

The $US69.99 edition of the game will also include unique in-game weapons and armour.

“We’re really excited to roll out this Collectors’ Edition featuring so many unique items, including special Collectors’ Edition armour and weapons and content that will surprise Mass Effect fans,” said Dr. Ray Muzyka, co-founder, BioWare and Group General Manager of the RPG/MMO Group of EA. “The limited edition comic book and bonus DVD will really enhance and expand the overall Mass Effect 2 experience.”

I know that collector’s editions have become the norm for most major game releases these days, but I still don’t see the draw. Well, perhaps with the exception of Modern Warfare 2’s night vision goggles.

Mass Effect 2 hits stores on Jan. 26 in North America and Jan. 29 in Europe for $US59.99.

Kotaku AU Note: <del datetime="2009-11-06T01:15:46+00:00">We’ll try to find out as soon as we can whether this limited edition will also be available in Australia.</del> EA has confirmed the Mass Effect Collector’s Edition will be available in Australia exclusively through EB Games. It will retail for $119.95 RRP.

The Limited Edition of Battlefield: Bad Company 2 has been announced, delivering four vehicle upgrades and two classic Battlefield 1943 weapons at no additional cost.

The Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Limited Edition isn’t a collector’s edition, weighed down with useless trinkets for an inflated price, but rather a limited version of the regular game packaged with some extras to make getting the game on day one a little more worthwhile. The six special customisations included in the LE are available to all players once they unlock them, but LE buyers will get them on day one, giving them a brief advantage in multiplayer. Think of it as a head start.

The four vehicle unlocks include improved armour, additional weapon mounts, a motion sensor that detects nearby enemies, and a tracer dart pistol that marks enemy vehicles to be tracked by rockets, even when outside of your line of sight.

Fans of Battlefield 1943 will feel right-at-home with the M1A1 submachine gun and the M1911 pistol, powerful weapons from more than 66 years in the past.

The Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Limited Edition will be available on March 2 in North America, sold at participating retailers while supplies last.

But this is the 10th Anniversary of 2K Sports’ NBA title, and they celebrate in style with this special edition.

As detailed earlier, the set is a sports locker with shelf space for 25 games inside. It also comes with a combination lock for your front door latch. A poster, Kobe Bryant figurine and, of course, the game itself, are included. Only 30,000 were made, this one is No. 986.

This was unboxed – why else – for sports gamers to drool over, but we won’t be keeping it. Only the outer seals were broken, but the whole package is going into our charity item warehouse. Later this year someone will be happy to claim it in the name of a worthy cause, with thanks to 2K Sports for a well made game and a worthy shrine to it.

If you recognise this thumb ring, then you should probably preorder Naruto Shippuden: Clash of Ninja Revolution 3 from GameStop.

The Sasori Akatsuki thumb ring is one of two separate exclusives that GameStop is featuring for the November release of Clash of Ninja Revolution 3, available to anyone who preorders the regular $US39.99 version of the game online or in-store. Fans that’d rather pass on the bling can opt for a special limited edition bundle of the game and a DVD of Naruto Shippuden The Movie for $US10 over regular retail price.

“We are thrilled to offer consumers two fantastic value options when purchasing our game this holiday season,” said Laura Yoshioka, director of consumer software at TOMY Corporation. “By offering a highly collectable Sasori ring as a pre-sell item for the standard version of the game, and including such a highly-anticipated movie DVD in our first ever Clash of Ninja limited edition, our goal was to offer Naruto fans a tremendous opportunity to add to their Naruto collection whatever their budget allowed.”

Looking over the GameStop website, it does look like the ring is exclusive to the normal edition, not available with a preorder for the limited edition, so make your decision wisely!

Introducing the Uncharted 2: Fortune Hunter Edition. It’s the game’s fancy-pants version, and includes a copy of Uncharted 2, art book, collector’s case and a replica of the game’s mysterious, ancient artefact. Sounds good. Only, there’s a catch.

See, Naughty Dog & Sony want this to be a genuine limited edition deal. Not something anyone plonking down $US5 at GameStop can get their hands on. So they’re going to be giving them away in competitions on the PlayStation.Blog, the game’s multiplayer beta and in PlayStation Home.

Interestingly, we’ve been told that in addition to the stuff outlined above, the Fortune Hunter Edition will also include codes for special downloads… not sure what those would be, exactly, but they definitely suggest some kind of rare downloadable content. Multiplayer skins/weapons, perhaps?

It’s Activision testing how stupid you all are. But it’s not alone in the over-the-top military shooter collector’s edition stakes! No, there’s also Operation Flashpoint 2 to consider.

Codemaster’s “sequel” to Bohemia Interactive’s 2001 classic has a limited edition that comes with an army helmet. A full-size army helmet, that looks like it’s made from metal (plus a dog tag), giving the game a box that wouldn’t look out of place in the Rock Band isle. Or a stinky old army disposal store.

No word on price yet, or availability (this is a European version), but hey, on the bright side, unlike the MW2 box, this one will be made available to PC users.

Kotaku AU Note: I’ve asked Codies to confirm availbility in Australia. Will let you know.

[thanks Chris!]
