LunchTimeWaster: A Kind Of Test Subject Blue

Kotaku AU

Test Subject Blue is a cracker. It toys with familiar mechanics, giving the flash platformer a fresh spin, but it also features a level of polish you rarely find in games such as this.

LunchTimeWaster: PixelJunk Island

Kotaku AU

PixelJunk Monsters is probably my favourite tower defence game of all time. Castaway Island is basically PixelJunk Monsters – as simple as that. Usually I would deem this kind of plagiarism a bad thing, but goddammit I want to play PixelJunk Monsters on my PC at work!

LunchTimeWaster: Putt Putt Gone Wild

Kotaku AU

There’s crazy golf, then there’s crazy golf. Wonderputt is crazy golf. A game that takes an old fashioned mechanic and reinvents it through clever, seamless level design.

LunchTimeWaster: Exit Path 2

Kotaku AU

Flow is paramount in platforming – and in any genre for that matter – but when I imagine the slickest, most rewarding moments of gaming in platformers, I think of blasting through tricky levels in Super Mario World at speed, I think of precise wall jumps in Super Meat Boy. Incredibly, Exit Path 2 has moments that compare to those behemoths.

LunchTimeWaster: Think A Shooter Can’t Surprise You?

Kotaku AU

This game is called Experimental Shooter, and it does exactly what it says on the tin – it experiments. Like a top down shooting Mario Galaxy, each level introduces the player to a brand new mechanics. This is a game overflowing with ideas and I love it.

LunchTimeWaster: Squashed Tomatoes

Kotaku AU

Not to Scale is the kind of video game that actually challenges my own limited definition of gaming – it’s essentially an attempt to reinvent the jigsaw, and combine it with those weird number shuffling games you played as a kid. It’s a mindbender of a game, and I completely love the simplicity of it all.

LunchTimeWaster: Run Little Runner Guy!

Kotaku AU

Sash MacKinnon is a previous winner of Game Jam, and a pretty clever guy to boot. When he sent me an email over the weekend, letting me know that his latest game — Mr Runner 2 — was available to play on his website, I knew that finding a LunchTimeWaster for Tuesday would be a piece of cake.

LunchTimeWaster: Always With The Running

Kotaku AU

I have a soft spot for one button jump running type games ala Canabalt. Remember Edmus? That was the last productivity killer for me. Now I’ve stumbled across Go Go Agent Zero, which isn’t really as good as the afore-mentioned titles, but really does have a cool sensation of speed. And explosions. Lots of explosions.

LunchTimeWaster: Robot Wars

Kotaku AU

So you’re a robot guy. You want to shoot other robot things. The context is flimsy. You have no idea why you’re shooting, but it doesn’t matter because shooting is fun. This is the basic concept of Effing Machines.

LunchTimeWaster: Planet Hopping

Kotaku AU

As a pale pasty Scottish man living in Australia, I understand the core concept of Run from the Sun better than most – you must, in short, move as far away from the sun as possible. The sun is chasing you, so you must hop from planet to planet in search of safety. This game is super simple. And awesome.
