There was that Mario Bros. movie. Remember it? I just thought it didn’t go anywhere. Like, you can only blow up enough cars and places, have enough special effects. That’s not necessarily a plot. But we’ve got a plot. And also it’s so topical and real ’cause it’s about drugs, which is a huge problem in our society.

It was great to hear that. Read the rest of the his interview and say “hi” to your mother for me, okay?

Excited about the Max Payne movie? Don’t be says Australian writer Latauro at movie site Ain’t It Cool News. While the film’s stars, such as actor Mark Wahlberg, have praised the script, the early buzz around the film is anything but praiseworthy. From the AICN review:

Then the reality of the film began to seep in. Horrid dialogue, surprisingly bad acting across the board, and some really dodgy sound editing — have you ever noticed sound editing before? …me neither — helped to drive an already sub-standard plot further into the ground…

Nobody comes out of this thing looking good. The damn thing’s 85 minutes and you swear you’ve been in there for about two and a half hours by the time it’s over. All the buzz you’ve been hearing about how this film is good is coming from people whose jobs depend on it making money. Do not give it the time of day.

Sounds like the film’s makers should’ve worried less about making Max Payne true to the video game and concentrated on, you know, just making a decent flick. All hope is not lost, as there will be many more reviews. And maybe, just maybe, you can one day see the Max Payne flick and say “hi” to his mother for us.

Well, what did he think of the Max Payne script when he first read it?

They knew I wouldn’t even had read it if I knew it was based on a video game. But I read the script, and I thought this is a great script and a great character. And then, after seeing the game, I thought, ‘Wow, this is the most elaborate story I’ve ever seen from a video game.’ Really, there’s a lot going it, it’s a very intricate story. And, you know, the writers didn’t have to take my liberties… My assistant, who’s a complete gamer freak… I let him play the game non-stop…

That was nice of Marky Mark — you know, letting his gamer freak assistant to play! Wahlberg says that he does enjoy Wii Tennis with his daughter. While playing it, he also mentions how he hurt his thumb. That’s too bad.

That’s what the cover of the latest issue of British mag Total Film is asking. We’d respond with “hopefully not“, what with Jason Bourne being nothing like Max Payne, but whatever. On the bright side, the mag’s feature article on the movie has a bit of new info, including the fact that, apparently, Payne is Wahlberg’s all-time “favourite role”, and that he’ll be bringing a little more depth to the character than the game ever afforded:

Sure, I raise my voice, get in people’s faces… But I ramp up the humour, too. He’s like a version of my character in The Departed – sly and cynical but also very funny. That’s the kind of thing people like to see me doing.

We also like seeing him dance around in his undies and/or singing Transformers songs, but hopefully they won’t also be in the movie. They’re not really canon.

Not even for research. Why? Because the dude has an addictive personality, apparently:

I got more responsibility now than I’ve ever had with the kids and everything else. I don’t want to be spending 14 hours on the videogame and then eight hours on the set. It’s not going to work out.

Before you get all huffy, I don’t think you need to have played Max Payne to know how to prattle on in a low voice and dive sideways in slow motion. Mark Wahlberg can do that just fine already.
