Animal Crossing Wii Begins Its Dominance In Japan

Posted by Michael McWhertor at 10:40 AM on November 29, 2008

If the debut of Animal Crossing: Let's Go To The City (nee City Folk) is any indication, Nintendo has another hit on its hands. City Folk landed at #1, with Wild World for the DS still in the top 30.

City Folk for the Wii was just one of five new debuts claiming half of the top ten, beating out Square Enix's Chrono Trigger DS and The Last Remnant. Another strong Xbox 360 Japanese-style role-playing game that should help Microsoft's fortunes overseas. Former chart-topper Kirby will likely move over 500,000 copies of Hoshi no Kirby: Ultra Super Deluxe by the end of the year.

A handful of PlayStation 3 titles show stronger sales legs than their counterparts, potentially a good sign for Sony in Japan. Media Create sales for November 17 to 24 are after the jump.

Nintendo DSi Still The System To Beat In Japan

Posted by Michael McWhertor at 11:00 AM on November 21, 2008

It was a down week for hardware sales in Japan, with the Wii the only platform to see an uptick in sales week-to-week. The recently launched Nintendo DSi still tops the charts and is in no danger of losing its position to any of its hardware competitors. It does about half of the total hardware sales for the week of November 10 to 16. PlayStation 3 sales stay solid amid a half-dozen new releases over the past month, including Way of the Samurai 3, Resistance 2 and Grand Theft Auto IV. Wonder how long the DS Lite will continue to chart...

Last week's Media Create chart topper, Hoshi no Kirby: Ultra Super Deluxe, holds on to the top spot amid plenty of new competition. Way of the Samurai 3 and Resistance 2 both debuted strong, kicking former top ten PlayStation 3 titles LittleBigPlanet and Grand Theft Auto IV out of the top ten.

PlayStation 3, Nintendo DSi Sales Cool Down In Japan

Posted by Michael McWhertor at 1:40 PM on November 14, 2008

After last week's exciting new hardware debuts, the Japanese hardware sales charts calm down a bit. Sure, the Nintendo DSi is still selling like gangbusters, but the PlayStation 3 starts its journey downward into more normal territory, moving less than half of what it did the week prior. On the flip side of the hi-def console war, the Xbox 360 doubles its week-to-week sales in Japan, making this pie chart a lot less red and a lot more lime green.

The Japanese release of Kirby Superstar Ultra, which will hit Oz on November 27, lands with a resounding pink boom, selling over a quarter million copies. PlayStation 3 Sales Rebound In Japan, DSi Tops Charts

Posted by Michael McWhertor at 9:20 AM on November 7, 2008

The PlayStation 3 hasn't had a good couple of weeks, with sales bottoming out at just 3,931 according to Media Create. Fortunately for Sony, the PS3's fortunes have changed in a major way with the introduction of a new 80GB model and bundles featuring LittleBigPlanet and Gran Turismo 5 Prologue Spec III, with a ten times increase week to week. GTA IV's stellar sales certainly didn't hurt.

Japanese Gamers Choose Girly Fashion Over Wii Music

Posted by Michael McWhertor at 6:40 AM on October 31, 2008

Last week's Japanese software chart champ Wii Music might not have the legs of Nintendo's other first party Wii efforts if its second week performance is any indication. The music game dropped to fifth place amid new competition from Nintendo's own Wagamama Fashion: Girls Mode and Atlus' Devil Summoner: Kuzunoha Raidou tai Abaddon Ou. The latter would've topped the charts, if both the limited edition and regular edition were counted as one release by Media Create, for the record.

Posted by Michael McWhertor at 5:40 AM on October 24, 2008

Wii Music, as you may already know, topped Japanese sales charts in its debut week. While the Media Create numbers skew a bit lower than what Famitsu had to say, Wii Music won the sales chart crown handily, pushing Pokémon Platinum back to the number two spot.
