Or shall we say, was.

Enterprising modder samm5506 was digging around in Left 4 Dead 2’s code the other day when he stumbled upon a zombie model not found within the game itself. Dropping it into a level, he found it was none other than Mr. Jimmy Gibbs himself, who aside from being a particularly tough zombie, also brings out a few custom one-liners from the survivors, like Nick’s “God damn that Jimmy Gibbs Jr!”.

To drop Gibbs into a game (PC version only, naturally), enable the console, then from the main menu enter these commands:

map atrium
sv_cheats 1
z_forcezombiemodelname common_male_jimmy
z_forcezombiemodel 1

Then have at him. The fact he’s dead — and trying to bite your face off — makes stealing his car totally OK.

This might be played through a Wii/GameCube emulator, not on the console itself. There are a few flaws in the re-creation — how many can you spot? Mario doesn’t go into the subterranean coin chamber, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist, so let’s say that one doesn’t count.

BoingBoing’s Cory Doctorow writes that he stopped by Hacklab yesterday unannounced and asked to see the Super Mario laser cutter. Sure enough, they fired it up and it played. Warning, if you boost your speakers to hear it, the guy says “f—-ing awesomesauce,” at the beginning so it might not be a great idea if you’re somewhere where saying that word would be inappropriate. You can now, with Dino D-Day, a new Half-Life 2 mod from Digital Ranch Interactive.

Digital Ranch Interactive is releasing a full Dino D-Day game onto Steam in 2010, but you can get an early taste of the twisted World War II dinosaur action right now, courtesy of a Half-Life 2 mod preview of sorts. You step into the shoes of Sgt. Jack Hardgrave, a renowned palaeontologist who thought he had left work behind, until Hitler raises dinosaurs to pit against the Allies in 1942. Suddenly he’s perhaps the most important weapon the Allies have against this new foe.

It sounds completely ridiculous, to be sure, but at the same time completely awesome. We’re conflicted. Head over to the mod page to catch a glimpse of the trailer, featuring two really bad tastes that taste horrible together.

The displeasure directed by some in the Modern Warfare 2 PC community toward Infinity Ward isn’t limited to petitions. This weekend, YouTube removed a video Infinity posted to its channel after a modder filed a DMCA takedown notice.

BASHandSlash user PST*Joker has claimed that Modern Warfare 2’s AC-130 reward (achieved for a killstreak of 11) was influenced by mods he and other PC gamers made to the original Modern Warfare. Infinity Ward posted a video (above, currently hosted on a non-Infinity Ward account) highlighting the AC-130 bonus in Modern Warfare 2.

So one of the site’s community members sent a tweet out to PST*Joker recommending he, as the owner of the content, send a DMCA takedown to YouTube. “See how youtube responds,” he said.

Shortly thereafter, the video was pulled, right off of Infinity Ward’s official channel.

BASHandSlash says that after the takedown, Infinity Ward community manager Robert Bowling direct messaged PST*Joker about the removal: “Really? Copyright infringment claim? :sigh:” read the message, according to BASHandSlash.

The gameplay’s a little formulaic, but have you tried Next-Gen A-Team, for Grand Theft Auto IV?

Full disclosure, I frequently game with Hot Blooded’s Kreyg Dezgo (also the creator of this vid). You can usually find us in Borderlands. Last week he told me about this delightful “mod” – not literally, as no code is involved – that he plays in Grand Theft Auto IV multiplayer called The A-Team. It’s four players vs. 12, and it is total mayhem.

To get the full effect you really need 16 players all briefed and abiding by the rules. But you go into a free mode game, with four players forming “The A-Team” and jumping in a van. They start at the prison on Alderney. Their goal is to outrun the 12 other players, chasing them in cars and choppers, to get to the airport in Dukes and escape via helicopter. Successful extraction = victory. “Death is not an option for the A-Team!” says Kreyg.

That is seriously an awesome use of GTA IV multiplayer. But if you don’t have 16 of your closest friends available to pull it off, then I guess you’re stuck with the following. Unless you have a better set of informal multiplayer rules?

Reader Osama D’s French friend built him this fighting stick out of a Nintendo Entertainment System, before leaving for his home country for good. You know, when I say goodbye to folks, I usually just buy a card or something.

Osama calls it The NEStickle (not to be confused with the NES emulator) because, well, why not. It’s not like FightDeck or TurboConsole’s gonna make this look any less weird. The NES controller houses the stick’s USB cable, and it’s compatible with all consoles and PC.

Osama says Nicolas, his friend, had to carve a reinforced interior from wood “using nothing but his laser vision. This insures that I don’t over-zealously cave the NES in while pressing hard on those buttons when I’m losing badly to a cheap-ass who won’t stop throwing me.”

You can see more pics of the NEStickle and its construction over at the link.
