Think Rampage Would Make A Good Monster Movie? So Does New Line Cinema

Inspired by the classic giant monster movies of Hollywood’s past, Midway’s arcade classic Rampage is now the potentially classic giant monster movie of Hollywood’s future. New Line Cinema has begun development on George, Ralph, and Lizzie’s big screen debut.

New Line Goes Blu-Ray

It was just a few hours ago that I posted about the HD DVD group cancelling its CES press conference and now we have more news on the format war front lines. In an article in Variety yesterday, buried amongst the Warner’s announcement was one line that was very important to the Blu-Ray cause:

Warner sister company New Line confirmed it will shift allegiance to Blu-ray only as well.

Warner’s other companies which include HBO and BBC, still have not announced whether they will make the shift as well, but it seems unlikely that they would go the other way. But, time is of the essence for distributors it seems as Warner CEO Barry Meyer states:

“The window of opportunity for high-definition DVD could be missed if format confusion continues to linger.”

One more nail in the HD DVD coffin?

Gears of War Movie Cancelled?

Sorry Cliffy. Here is the latest rumour from film site IESB: …the IESB has been informed [director]Wiseman is off Gears as well*** and that New Line Cinema will most likely not move forward with the film at all. Our source is saying that the studio has concerns with ballooning budget of the film.

It’s too early to tell if this is a load of BS or completely true. But remember, this is Hollywood we’re dealing with now. Everything regarding game movies should be seen as rumour at best until you are actually sitting in a movie theatre with a sticky floor, having just forked over $10 to see what we’ve been talking about.

Len Wiseman May Direct Gears Of War Film

Len Wiseman, director of Live Free or Die Hard and both Underworld films is said to be in negotiations to direct New Line Cinema’s Gears of War film. He’s a fairly hot director at the moment, especially after building the looking-to-flop Underworld into a franchise making over $US200 million worldwide. Since I haven’t seen any of his three directed films, I’ll refrain from judgment (at least until after the jump).

I will say, however, that anyone bitching on the topic should remember that while Gears is a great game, it had a superficial, complete piece of crap storyline built upon Hollywood cliches. The only reason the IP is worth a dime outside of the gaming world is its brilliant art direction. In my eyes, no director can screw up a narrative experience that was worthless in the first place.
