The constant progression of annual sport titles has another advantage besides the games getting more and more realistic every year. It creates moments where the players go nuts — suddenly, our ordinary game turns itself into Dragon Ball Z or Super Smash TV. We selected below a few of these from the last few years’ FIFA, NHL and NBA titles.
The National Hockey League is frozen in a labour impasse that so far has canceled opening night festivities scheduled for today, and shows no sign of ending any time soon. So, in steps EA Sports, using NHL 13, to provide a simulation and highlights for how the season would play out. Here are highlights from the first week of canceled games. And to narrate them, here is ESPN’s hockey token Steve Levy — who has no presence in the video game, that I know of, anyway.
This is a glitch video to end all glitch videos, and not just because that’s a player getting checked over the glass and into the fourth row of a hockey arena. It’s also Sidney Freaking Crosby, the Pittsburgh Penguin’s superstar who has lost, like, an entire season’s worth of games due to concussions, going back to early 2011.
Last year, when NHL 12 allowed you to create a female hockey player in its superstar-fantasy “Be A Pro” mode, the only real difference was the face on the player in the video game. Underneath a helmet and the hulking pads, moving fast on ice skates, it’s hard to instantly tell if someone’s a man or a woman. And the player’s ratings, most importantly, began at the same starting point as a man and then progressed on merit, regardless of gender.
In what appears to be a first, two women’s hockey stars will appear as playable athletes in a sports video game simulating a professional men’s league. NHL 13 will feature Hayley Wickenheiser (above, left), of the Canadian women’s national team, and Angela Ruggiero (above, right) of the United States national team, alongside Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux and other all-time greats in the game’s “Be A Legend” mode.
A company that supplies 3D mapping technology for games like Call of Duty and Assassin’s Creed saw a £3 million ($4.5 million) drop in its profits this year, and blamed the fact it spent way too much time animating a bunch of dumbass superheroes Stan Lee thought up for the National Hockey League.
42-year-old hockey fan Mike Schaaf was in the market for some more permanent body art to demonstrate his passion for the pastime, but wasn’t sure which artistic direction to go in. Then he saw someone playing Plants Vs Zombies.
Let’s just say if you’re going into the corner with Winnipeg’s Nik Antropov hot on your tail, be prepared to pay the price.
